At 1st watch of this video when you said the words "Number seven " it looked like you were holding up eight fingers. 🤭 My Mum who's a former English teacher advised me that before trying to write my novel, that I write it as a {one or two page} short story. When I 1st got the idea for my novel, I asked myself IF i should write it as a novel or short story & quickly felt to do the premise justice it "has to be" a novel. I know this video is ancient, but do you ever find it weird how science could do just about anything, yet magic, especially hard magic, can be so limited and finite? I mean, just look at your computer using electrical power right now.
Not to mention some mistakenly think electrical power is just electricity entering a device when it is electrical current running in a circuit to generate an electromagnetic field, which produces energy perpendicular to the field's rotation. Of course, we wee not sure of that until we tried to run wires underwater and found out we needed an insulator, like air. Meanwhile, magic A is magic A and only functions this way, despite species or mechanism.
Note: I learnt that from some random youtube vids.

One of my main problems with Frozen 2 was that they suddenly gave Elsa all these powers she didn't have before, then explained it with "She's the fifth elemental spirit." without explaining what the elemental spirits do or how she ended up being one when all the others were strictly not human and were anciently powerful. Like, how does being the fifth element mean that she can turn the water spirit itself into ice?

There was a certain super popular book with a magic system that totally ruined the novel for me. There were no limitations, and no reasoning whatsoever and eventually I didn't care much for the book because I knew they could just magic their way out of it.
I totally get wanting to spill all of the magical goodies on the pages, but I really love it when I read series which only show the tip of the iceberg when it comes to that special bit whether it is magic or world-building in the first book and dives deeper into the nuances in subsequent books. That really keeps me buying and reading!

Yeah, J. K. Rowling could make good characters and some nice plot twists, but her magic system has practically EVERYTHING that I don't like in a magic system: magic being an inborn power rather than something being reach through personal study and enlightenment, spells being based around merely saying phrase without any deeper understanding required (I'm looking at you, sectumsempra), characters not using spells in consistent or intelligent ways, et cetera.
Funny how the best magic systems tend to be found in tabletop RPG settings (like Exalted) rather than in literature (guess it might have something to do with helping setting a clear boundary for what players can and cannot do).

Harry Potter did have limits on the magic, albeit none that really proved a hindrance until the final book. Magic couldn’t be used to create something out of thin air, it had to come from somewhere or be replicated from something already existing. Broken wands couldn’t be repaired through magic, only the Elder Wand. The main consistency is that some magic was immune to other magic, like how the Invisibility Cloak wasn’t affected in the fourth book. It’s also implied severe injuries or health conditions are more difficult, as the hospital wing is regularly required and there’s a whole hospital.

I'm making a story where the main cast of characters are all demons, and my magic system is based on Sins.
Everytime a demon compels a human to comite a sin, he/she recieve a small gemstone related to that particular sim [pride, sloth, lust...]
and so the demon can consume that gemstone to evoke some magic, like: Rage gems can cast fireballs, sloth gems can make enemy fall sleep, lust gems can charm others...
Also the Gemstones are the currency in hell so the richer the demon the powerful he is. and also ties the magic system with the world economy.

That's super cool!! The demons in my story (because every magical story has demons) can only use certain types of magic, such as transmutation and necromancy because they were not made by God. This means they cannot use most human magic such as fire magic, lightning magic etc, but if a demon can manage to kill and eat enough humans (or drink enough blood) they will get an advanced form of the magic those humans possessed.
Does that make sense? I'm bad at explaining things...

My two favorite magic systems are bending from avatar and alchemy from Fullmetal Alchemist.
Both systems are very neutral. Their is no good magic or bad magic it's very much how you use it. A perfect example is how in avatar firebending is used by good charecters like Zuko and Uncle Iroh and we have an entire episode in the third season where we learn firebending isn't destruction but energy instead. Also there was that lady that used water bending for bloodbending and enough evil earthbenders inside Ba Sing Sai to rival the fire nation

  • @shenyathewelder9695
    @shenyathewelder9695 2 роки тому +10

In my stories there’s a VERY hard magic system that pretends to be soft magic. Some (usually only one or two non-main and usually borderline antagonist) characters know how to use magic to the point where it becomes practical, but the reader and other characters only see little bits of that. As an example, in my current story “the Karodor city nightmare” (title needs work) (also there’s music for the story on my channel) there’s a character known as “the Haruspex” (letting others know his name is a religious thing for his people), and he can use healing magic very extensively. There’s a scene near the midpoint of the story where a child is injured, and he pours an unknown (to the characters and reader) liquid on the boys arm, then plays a short tune on a small flute. The liquid causes intense pain, but once the tune is played the wound closes.
To the characters who are not the Haruspex, and to the reader, he just did some weird shit. To the Haruspex: he poured alcohol on the wound to clean it, then used magic to close the wound. If he had used magic without cleaning the wound he would have trapped dirt and bacteria in the wound, obviously bad.
The reader is never informed of this, and magic only shows up to play a minor roll a few times in the story. It’s hinted at that the magic the Haruspex uses is very important, and sometimes stated directly that he’s a world renowned healer. The thing is that what happens with magic in this story is fun and cool, but you don’t get the whole picture unless you theorize yourself, or read other stories.

    • @shenyathewelder9695
      @shenyathewelder9695 2 роки тому +1

Also a minor note, the flesh replaced on the boy came off the Haruspex, this isn’t shown until several chapters later. Conservation of mass and such still plays a roll. You can’t have the candy without paying for it.

I'm a young writer. Just turned 18, in fact. I've spent most of my childhood reading fantasy novels. Something about magic just seemed to appeal to me; and do you know what always got me hooked? The magic system. It's a law of the world. It HAS to make sense. You can have great characters, great world, but once you go onto the selling point of the fantasy genre and fuck it up, you've doomed the rest of your novel. Now that I'm trying to write my own novel for real, it really helped me consolidate a system I can believe. Countless systems mixed into one.

Idea I just had (that someone has probably already beat me to): a setting with both hard and soft magic systems. Humans (and/or the other humanish species) use magic with hard set rules that they cannot break. The Fey can use magic that seems to have no rules or limitations are far as we can tell, but the Fey are frustrated by the fact that humans can do things like make promises and just break them, flat out lie (Fey may deceive but only while still technically telling the truth), touch iron, enter homes without permission, etc.
    So,
humans = hard magic rules, soft behavior rules
fey= soft magic rules, hard behavior rules

Something I figured out to explain one section of my magic system is by making the character that practices it incredibly passionate. They love their magic and take any opportunity to gush about it. This lets me both explain this magic system in depth, and give an otherwise reserved character a chance to be more outgoing.

@Trin Silvers some of the time. They're a healer, and were raised in a tribe that specializes in a specific type of healing magic, but since leaving that tribe they've devoted themselves to learning all the healing magic they can, from spells to potions to artifacts. So they're constantly trying new magic, and they can very often mess up and cause another character a temporary handicap, all in pursuit of mastering healing magic. Their original type of healing magic is reliable, since they have decades of training in it, but it can be highly unethical, so they tend to stay away from it. Overall, they're a blast to write.

#4 The Impact on Society is a huuuuuuuuge one and I feel it needs to be expanded on a bit more. A lot of fantasy writers tend to not fully think through the impact that access to magic would have on society, especially if magic is relatively widespread or common. For instance, having nature mages/druids or whatever being able to conjure vegetation like vines or cast water related spells in the form or tsunamis or whatever, but then still having a traditional medieval system of serfs farming crops for their lords and needing access to natural sources of water to do so. Why aren't mages conjuring up crops, or at least conjuring water or mulch to assist in crop farming? Clear limitations need to be put in place if you don't want your magic to affect these things, and if there aren't such limitations to it, there needs to be consideration taken for the logical place that magic would have for things such as this. And this is just one example. If magic is common enough in society, it would affect pretty much every aspect of the society, from culture to economics to politics to education, and more.

I have a bunch of types of magic, and different emotions/states of mind tied to them (weather magic is easier when completely calm and in control of your emotions, but can go haywire when super emotional), but not really much of an explanation as to _how_ it's cast beyond normal people being able to learn magic just as well as witches.

Having magic come at a cost or price makes for good structure and drama. Fullmetal Alchemist subscribes to Equivalent Exchange, which prevents people from breaking the plot and showcases a wide variety of abilities, each with natural strengths and weaknesses. It’s weaved into the plot so much the overall macguffin is something that bypasses it.

if anyone's interested, here's a lore dump of the magic system I made for my book that only had magic show up a couple of times XD
There were 5 magic wielders when magic first came to this world, they died off millenniums ago but to hold magic you have to have some kind of blood connection to them, no matter how far down the family tree you are
If you're connected to this bloodline, then you can choose one of the multiple magic types and begin training on it, some examples being healing magic, element magic (which goes into subcategories), appearance magic, world magic (not as op as it sounds) and much more
Once you choose your magic type, you get an object connecting you to this magic which once you're bound to, makes it extremely difficult to learn any other type of magic
The most seen bounding items include; jewellery, staffs and wands (becoming less common)
Jewellery is used for people who prefer to do magic by hand, used for the most experienced of magic uses, wands and staffs are used as a guide to help focus the magic
Being a magic user more often than not gives you an extended life expectancy, only about a 15%-25% though
There's so much more I can go into with this but I'll leave it there lol

A fun way to show ultra powerful magic with weaknesses is in the Chronicles of Amber where magic takes a fair bit of energy but is ready strong so to balance this spells must require huge incantations that take anywhere from 15 minutes to four hours to recite so wizards "hang" spells by skipping a phrase in the incantations that when spoken will trigger the spell. The heroes now have crazy powers but have to spend a long rest preparing them and then have to be careful to remember wich phrases cast which spells. This could be used to great effect in a medieval setting with death note style intrigue where we watch for the right phrases to trigger between to smiling nobles secretly holding death spells over each others heads.

Personally, I believe that in any hard magic system, the more well defined the weaknesses to magic are, the better. I generally find that with magic that has more weaknesses, it forces authors to think outside the box with how magic is going to be used in a fight or in any kind of situation.
