  • This video features my every day carry, work/short distance travel get home bag and its contents. This bag is with me whenever I travel 30 minutes to an hour from my home. It contains the bare essentials to get me back to my family if I need to ditch my truck and return on foot. If you don't carry a get home bag, I highly recommend putting one together. Just something that can get you back home alive and to your loved ones if a SHTF situation presents itself.

    I loved this video! I also use a sling bag, which you don’t hear too many using, Not only do I use mine like yours, but I take it with me any time I ride with someone else, whether it’s going to visit Family, Friends or to town to the store for some supplies.
    My car is set up for anything I would need while traveling if I’d break down and I have my sling bag every time I leave the house in case I’d have to walk home.
    But once I went with a family member to run an errand and my sling bag was in my car at the house, and we broke down along the road, and I just assumed they would have prepared items!? Nope!
    All they had was a bottle of hand sanitizer, a mask, some napkins from Dairy Queen, and a half empty water bottle!! 😮, their Cell phone was 23% no charger! That was it!!
    I had my EDC items. But that taught me a lesson right there, not everyone is even slightly prepared.
    So if we go with somebody else, in their car or what ever need to take your Get home bag!

    As for repairs I always keep zip ties with me with the duct tape. I also keep my maps in a ziplock bag for waterproofing. As for shelter I like having an emergency blanket/tarp for a cover. Also being in Florida I keep a hammock in my to get off the ground if needed. But the most important thing during the summer is bug spray. The mosquitoes will eat you alive down here. Check out the titan preparedness get home challenge. I’m taking my recce ruck/get home kit out for a long day hike then setting up shelter for some stealth camping. Making sure everything works and in order. Nicely done!👍🍻

    • @NEP_Chris
      @NEP_Chris  3 роки тому +1

      Normally I have zip ties but my kids got into them and used them for crafts. Lol. Gotta go to harbor freight and grab some more. Good call on the maps. My bag has always sat in the truck so I never considered it getting wet. The trash bags that I have in there will server as a ground cloth, I couldn’t fit much else. In my main bag I have a big SOL emergency tarp. I’ll be adding bug repellent and a mosquito head net as soon as hat and gloves weather has over which seems to be never this year lol. Once my new property dries out, I’m going to take a couple weekends to do dry runs with my various bags and kits. Just to make sure what I have is working for me. That’s something I suggest everyone does. Don’t just add stuff because it’s cool. Add what you are comfortable with and what works well for you. Can’t stress that enough. I see too many people adding tactical this and tactical that. Why??!! Add what works, not what makes you look cool. Thanks for watching and for the suggestions. I see you have a couple new vids up, I gotta get over to your channel and check them out👍🍺

    Nice. Basically the same kit I put together since I work 90 minutes from home and Michigan winters are crazy. I recently upgraded two things though. A military type poncho that can be converted into a shelter etc and a $20 reflective mylar survival blanket that can be used as shelter or a ground cover. Also I keep a knapsack in my trunk with hiking boots and insulated hiking pants and jacket that I could walk for hours in sub-zero weather like it's nothing. Also I replaced my battery pack with a weather radio flashlight battery pack combination

      I’ve completely rebuilt this bag since this video. Once I get things situated with the new studio (just purchased a new house), it will be the first video I make. I definitely want to get a military style poncho. I have looked at several but never seem to decide on one. Probably should since winter is coming up. As for the Mylar blanket, I use the SOL emergency Mylar blankets. They have never let me down and you can’t beat the price. I always have Carhartt overalls, jacket and good boots in my truck this time of year. I can’t part with my battery pack, it’s been a staple in my kit for a long time. But I do have an emergency radio/flashlight in my upgraded bag. The bag has gotten significantly bigger but, in the winter, I just need a little more with me.

    I like your bag it covers all the bases without going overboard with heavy equipment like other bags I've seen.... No need to cook meals ... No need for a fishing kit... The only thing I would add is a SWAT-T tourniquet..(inexpensive lightweight and doubles as a pressure bandage) perhaps some blood stopper powder.. a box of two packs for $5 at Walmart.... I also carry a tiny Sterno...justb to let you know Walmart has a 7x5 backpacker tarp."outdoor brand" .. very lightweight and inexpensive.. I carry this tarp & 4 aluminum lightweight small tent stakes... For cordage I use#90 Paracord . Which is really the skinny but strong paracord 50 ft length! Took very little room and weight !

    I think that I will make a get home bag. It would have come in handy winter before last when I was out of town and lost my truck keys. My van has no heater so I was extremely cold.
    I have a larger camping bag coming so I will convert my smaller bag into a get home kit. In addition to that I have a 75 liter INCH bag set up for long term survival.
    Thanks for the motivation.

  • @SebastianSynn18252
    @SebastianSynn18252 Рік тому +1

    An extremely well thought out kit. The only two things that I would add would be a tourniquet and some sort of cordage unless I missed it. (I'm watching while cooking) A big hank of paracord is not necessary. 20-25 feet of bank line. Even the thin #18 bank line is strong enough for most applications and would barely take up any room at all.

      My bag has a "foot kit" - Moleskin, a pair of cotton socks, a pair of wool socks, several flexible fabric Bandaids, and a small container of Gold Bond. I have a weird toe that sometimes gets blistered, even without a long walk home. If I had to face a 20 mile hike, I wouldn't get far without taking care of that toe right away.

    I'm just putting together a bag for my husband who works away from our farm. TBH he thinks I'm being a bit nuts since he just works about 14 miles away but he's humoring me for now. He'd have to cross or go around town then he'd be in the country for the biggest part of the walk. There are easily a dozen different routes he might choose to take depending on what exactly is going on including a much longer route that would basically avoid traveling in town at all. My nightmare is that I'll be stuck at home waiting for him having no idea which route he's taken should things calm down enough for me to go try to find him. With that in mind I decided to add some sheets of uniquely colored paper to his bag as well as some tape, tacks, twine, etc. as a means to hold it up. Now we've agreed on the most obvious route for him to take & he's agreed that should he need to deviate from that route he'll mark where he deviated with a sheet of that paper on a street sign or a power pole. Knowing where he turned off I should be able to figure out where he's headed next & get in front of him to pick him up. Paper is probably not the best thing to use for this but you get the idea. Rather than leaving a note telling everyone where you are going sorting out some way to let a friend or family member know probably isn't an awful idea.

Getting into HAM has been on my list of preps for awhile now but I still don't half way know what I'm doing so I haven't invested in a base station yet. With just 2 hand held units I'm betting that I could throw a rock & hit him before I could pick him up on that radio. lol

    Consider keeping the water bottle full and add a full Smart Water bottle, which works with threads on the Sawyer Mini. That gives you two full bottles of water, so you’re not spending time finding and purifying water. Remember, Your goal is to get home ASAP. Also, I would consider how you can reduce the weight of this get home bag to just what’s needed to get you home. Have you calculated how many hours walk do you typically drive for work away from Home? Do you really need to add the weight of longer term survival items if you are less than a days walk from home? If you’re walking six hours to get home, are you really going to stop and build a fire and get into a bivy to sleep? Can you replace the battery operated headlamp with a rechargeable headlamp so you save the weight of two sets of AA batteries (since you already have battery charging sources for your phone).

    Nice get home bag. I like a ll the redundancy! I learned from you I need to add medical tape and moleskin to my get home bag! One thing that I have different is an 18650 USB-C rechargeable flashlight (Sofirn SC31Pro) with removable battery so I can charge other 18650 cells. In addition I have 2 of the Olight UC Magnetic USB Chargers. So its a triple redundancy and that would compliment your Anker power bank for example. The Olight UC Magnetic USB Chargers are cheap, take very little space, add lithium and NIMH charging. I also carry the Fenix E20 V2.0 so charging 2 AA at once is perfect using the magnetic chargers. Sofirn SC31Pro is very customizable for the stepped modes and full of features being Anduril firmware. I think its the cheapest Anduril flashlight there is currently. Its not my favorite Anduril flashlight but great for the price.

    Looks like a nice kit that’s not overly expensive (looking over to some folks with their IR-Lamps and night vision)!
    What’s missing for me, which might be based on the environment I live in, is some sunscreen and a light hat (base cap of boonie hat) against sun and rain. Furthermore I‘d carry some zip-ties and a fair bit of paracord (around 5m/16ft) to fix or repair stuff.
    What I do keep around, in a seperate simple bag in my car, is a full set of suitable clothing (worn down cargo pants, t-shirt, hoodie, boots) as I regularly wear suit and tie for work with fancy shoes, a sucker to walk home in.
    Once again, a nice kit with strict reasoning for everything you got. My additions may be seen as such, not as an „how could you miss that?“

    Very practical setup you have going on. Mine is just about the same as yours in the same military style sling backpack. I don't think I saw money but it would be a good thing to have such as an emergency $20 (1- $10/1- 5$/5- 1$) in a waterproof capsule. After seeing your video I will definitely leave a dedicated get home pair of shoes in the car an socks!
    I would also add some measurements of protection. However seeing as your from NY I think it would be taboo to have spare pistol caliber rounds to carry on you. Also, don't listen to the "WhY Do YoU NeEd To CaRrY aLl tHaT StUfF" comments. Those are the same people that are willfully unprepared for unforeseen situations and will wish they had half the stuff you have when emergencies happen.

    Ya need a mini hatchet. It can clip to the outside of your bag. Along with a mini hand saw. It helps with fire tenders to keep warm or cook. But damn a good job. As we marines say OUT STANDING there buddy. Keep it up. Try different types of gear fir the bag as I did. When I got thru. I had up to 27lbs of gear attached and inside for longer walks home. Your review is beyond standard. But would like to see you give it a shot as well. Then give a video out to show them. I used ration bars and other foods and moved certain things outside to make room in the bag. If it’s gonna be a super long walk home. Then you have to think about like Batman’s utility belt add things when you need it. Theses are things you can leave in your car and attach them when needed. You might also want to see about a bottle neck carrier that can attach to your belt. For added water. I’ve read your responses to other statements but twenty pounds won’t affect your walking. It included different line ropes and paracord. A better emergency tent and a better emergency poncho. The emergency tent and poncho will help in shelter building along with. I have tried to get people to see that closing one end of the tent will block the wind and keep you warmer. It will also give you a chance to dry your clothes in the emergency tent. Get the big one. But it’s small enough to fit in your bag. Trust me my Facebook family has all bought the my sling bag and. Methods. But mix it up and give your opinion on what to add in those scenarios when you just have to sit because of weather conditions. That’s what your bag should be about. The environment in which you have to travel. But maintaining your original ideal. It’s what the Marines taught us and army and navy. Sheess lol 😂it like I said, think BATMAN’s utility belt. It’ll be the added small things to attach. When weather changes so drastically you wish you had the emergency bivy tent. Let me know what you think. The more ideals you come up with. The better your go adventure will be, instead of a force March under bad conditions.

      @@SoloRenegade well how do you know that the distance you may have to walk won’t be long or longer. People don’t always open there doors to others. And the distance from car stalling to make to a friendly port could tedious. In the city it’s different but on the road a totally different subject. Yes you are getting home 🏠 but will you have had a decent meal before you bug out, did you restock that water bottle that’s been sitting for over 6 months. That’s why I illustrated different things to have in your kit. I had to walk a great distance and could not get help from others until I found a rest station or gas station. I knew that cell phone said three days travel. But conditions change it longer. Yeah mines said get home bag as well. But the small things made it possible to handle the trip without regrets. Ya never know…how far you may have to walk or stay put. The other small things are things you can keep in the trunk and never have to replace them. If conditions are bad, you have them when you need it. Again it’s not the city, it’s in the long road you’ll need it the most. Ummmm it’s 280 miles to visit family, cell said 2 days 9hours to walk. Certain stretches are more than 69 miles apart. So the next question is do you have a carbon filter to filter city chemicals, (you never take water near city’s or that lead out a city) can you find natural creeks, do you have a way to heat up with out making a fire. Mylar blankets are only rated to a certain degree to keep warm under extreme colds(don’t let them fool you buddy). Will you have at least a tarp to make small tent 🏕 if snow falls heavy. I carry a Lytharvest ultralight bivy tent that ways only less than a pound and a tarp. Will there be enough at least wood fuel or fuel to heat food 🍱. Some areas there may be no trees. There’s a white guy who travels between towns and he and I converse on the subject because that’s exactly the set up he has in his truck. Not a lot but a sleeping bag, small wood stove that can run on alcohol and heat tabs-and tarp. 2, 64oz Klean canteens stainless steal with carriers, a 3 liter camelback, mini hatchets plus a bag similar to the gentleman’s video I think a little larger, not much. He surveyed the areas he traveled and bought appropriate gear for the long trek home. If not far from his travel destination he back tracks, just needs what you have in the bag. But further out he needs more gear to make it to gas station or rest area. He has stretches that are more than 94 miles on one route, thru hikers can on average walk 15 to 20 miles per day…you do the math from there and can you do the same??!!! Yes it’s a get home bag. But be prepared with inexpensive things that can sit in your vehicle for life to get home. I have all the cheap stuff but sturdy and can last. Just FYI..

      @@pakleader4 You know how far you may have to go, because you know how far from home you are.
      yes, 15-20miles, I know these numbers. However, they are also carrying a heavier load, like all the people in these overloaded videos. Go light, go fast. I can cover 10miles in 2hrs on hiking trails with a light pack. I know because I've done it, even without physical training beforehand. When you're sufficiently motivated, you can go far. When not going that fast on a more typical hike for myself, I can easily cover 5 miles in 2hrs, and that's just putting around enjoying the view. I can easily go more than 20miles a day, if lightly loaded, probably at least as high as 30miles if sufficiently motivated by survival. Armies of old marched as much as 25miles a day, so don't tell me it can't be done. Most people are just soft of mind, and so aren't capable of pushing themselves to the level they are capable of, even military guys. Survival is not a brute force exercise either, it takes more brains than brawn. The more you know, the les you need.
      The issue is NOT about "expense" of the items, it's about WEIGHT, and what do you Really need? You're just trying to get home, as fast as possible.
      If all I am trying to do is get home, what do you Really need? Shelter is your only true priority, followed by water. A small knife, even a small swiss army will do the job to get you home. Something to hold water, ideally a light flexible container (foldable water bottles). No filter needed if you actually have any clue about how to source water, which most people do not know how to do these days. If you're covering 30miles a day, because you're in a hurry and motivated to get home, and traveling very light, you could cover two hundred miles in a week. Half the stuff people pack along are only useful to them if they STOP walking. Those items are only usable when Not travelling. Just because you can't figure it out and lack the knowledge to survive with less, doesn't mean others can't.

Sourcing water is not easy towards city life again you know your stuff, most creeks streams are run-offs from cities in certain areas. Which pretty much make the water non-drinkable. Don’t know the area you live in…so I can’t say you wouldn’t survive and excursion in that level. 20lbs is the average load a person can take with enough water and food and still make your distance that you speak of. I know my military standards having to carry a A.L.I.C.E pack for years. Do not be deceived into thinking you can’t cover that distance because someone told you it had to be lighter. It’s called laziness. And for elderly and disabled to be aloud to hike and camp. People make life easy…and the want things easy. Yes the gear is available. My gear does not weigh alot and I’m 56 years old dude. But the chance that requires I have to carry more food or water requires a difference on terrain, weather and distance…collapsing bags can’t be heated up. We carried the same thing 2 quarts canteens. SO UNDER THE MOST EXTREME conditions no matter what you believe (which you are entitled to) I have been there in the worst parts of the WORLD. Learning to survive, trained by the best from every location. Just because you see these guys use a single Nalgene bottle there close to water sources. So when you mentioned MILITARY your in my league, partner…and not all maps show fresh water when in the road, not all people will open there doors. 300 hundred miles with no water and your dead…in less than one week. Question have you ever had to make fresh water from a sewage reservoir. We had to learn to do that. When your out of your element you have to think like the slowest person on the planet. Civilians think by watching videos you learn every thing. Trust me you don’t Third Mar Div marines taught me well as along with the 365 Ord Battalion US ARMY. Don’t be OFFENDED, BECAUSE WE’ER THE ONES THEY TESTED YOUR GEAR OUT ON!! What you use today was but for military usage first. There’s a guy in UA-cam who made the same mistake and got a hold of contaminants in his water. Does gear reviews. I spoke to him and asked did he think what section of the state park he was in when he decided to use that mini sawyer. He said he didn’t think about, put him the hospital with severe ulcer. @@pakleader4 I'm ex-military too, even served with the 1st and 2nd Marines in Iraq (also fought in Afghanistan). I am not an "experienced hiker", at least I don't consider myself one. I grew up outdoors, camping, around farming, logging, etc. And the times I put down 10 miles in 2hrs, I'm not even running the whole thing, but also walking, jogging, etc. Now, my overall pace would be slower, but that is why I am not claiming to be able to do more than 30miles per day either.
      Problem with many people is they don't actually plan for reality, they don't know what the human body is capable of. Ex-military guys suffer from the idea of needing too much crap, and not separating them mindset from the fact they wont have a logistical supply train supporting them this time. When getting home is your mission, you need only focus on shelter in the short term. Staying warm through clothing, basic shelter (and understand what each element of a shelter is for), followed by water. For longer term survival you'll want food and food procurement items. But for a short term get home scenario, you need very little.
      The only person who tested my gear out is me. I chose my gear based on science, and logical reasoning, and personal experiences. I was way ahead of civilian hikers and military personnel on this stuff for years. I just put more effort into analyzing and studying the essences of what survival is really about. And much of my focus has been on how little can a person survive on indefinitely, and it's not much at all.

    One thing I would definetly add:
    a spare shirt and Undies. just in case you unexpectedly need to stay a night somwhere.
    and what about the bag itself? I have a Mil-Tec 25 liter backpack which is great for organising stuff. So many pouches and sleeves to store things. Its super light and compact but a little small for my needs. Isn't a sling bag a little messy? It seems like you have everything loose in there.. But I can see the pros of someting that goes over your sholder and not on your back..

    • @NEP_Chris
      @NEP_Chris  3 роки тому

      It’s all a matter of preference. I prefer a small sling bag. It fights right to my back and carries what I need. If the strap started bothering my shoulder/arm, I flip it to the other side. I’m not big on tons of pockets. Makes looking for something quick a bit of a pain, but that is purely a personal preference. I’d rather have a big open area and use separate pouches/bags within that pouch to organize my stuff. With a bag as small as this, I have no issues finding what I need. As for the shirt and underwear, I couldn’t agree more. I just need to do a little bit of re-packing to fit them in. I’d like to just make a skivvy roll to toss in it. I have a small butt pack attachment that will fit the bottom of that bag perfect that I intend to use for some extra clothes. Life has just kept me busy the past couple weeks lol. Great kit ! Consider adding emergency cash in there, somewhere.

      Thanks! And I definitely need to add cash. Problem is, my kids find it and spend it as fast as I stash it. Lol.

    I think its a good set up, If you were to have to deviate from going strait home and you needed to walk the 24-48 hrs to get there. In my case its 4 hrs to walk to my house aprox 18 miles, In my case i would carry about half that mostly clothing, food and water to last me 16 hrs. deviation time if need be. Although your bag is super complete keeping in the car it makes sense tho, you may not always be at work when you need your bag . could always toss stuff out in the back seat if you didnt need to carry it.

      Do you work out a lot and/or are tall? You're covering a lot of ground quickly there.

    Nicely done. I would include some cash in small bills. If the power is out there won't be any ATM's or credit card usage, and not likely anybody will make change.

      Great point. I do carry cash on me though at all times. I just keep it on my person, less likely to lose it if I have to ditch the bag for any reason.
