That has more to do with his life experiences than how much he did or did not score. you will most likely forget what a book teaches you but never what life teaches you, Bawa is a very articulate guy who has gone through a lot in life which shows through the maturity he projects. Also he is a lot older that the other guys so you can't judge others based on that.

Neville's mention of SUPW, brought back so many school memories ! In our case though, we only got graded (A,B,C etc.) in SUPW & actually had to do some 'social work', weekly. There were projects. But no exam papers. SUPW grades would be mentioned in the report card, but it wasn't tallied in the total marks scored from the other subjects. Sigh. I enjoyed SUPW though. My SUPW chores would be to visit kids at the Manovikas Kendra,Kolkata (An organization for special kids with Cerebral Palsy), visiting the lesser privileged kids through SOS village & spending a day doing artwork & such with them. It sure made me more empathetic and caring. Long live, SUPW :))

I agree with the ending of the show. I studied in India till I was 13 and then I moved to the US. I surely excelled... but the teaching method was so different I learned so much more here rather than reading a 50-year textbooks!

Cut to 6 days, my principle called the whole school and asked me to come in the front of the whole school and said, 'Why did you write- 'Principle enjoys air conditioner in her office and we have broken water coolers for our classrooms. ' She showed me the whole page repeatedly yelling at me where I found everyone has already deleted their comments and only my comments were visible. I could only manage to get away from this whole situation by saying, 'ma'am my account is hacked. '

I am obviously too late to the party. Got time recently because I teach and my WFH is just about done, and I am in my vacation time. Finally. Kautuk, I went to Singhania, too! (You should have mentioned the geese). But now that I work in an International school, yes, all these systems are already in place--we encourage questions, we have allotted Lifeskills classes planned by actual psychologists and not agony aunts, our learning is application-based, we have a cap of 20 students per class, and it is an improvement. But only the rich can afford it and that's the tragedy. Most other schools are still dependent on tuitions and prioritize competition and marks over learning for life. While I am glad, we do things differently, our parent body does not often change. Which means the kids are enjoying a subject, but the parents are purely interested in marks, and don't see progress. That's why while we record kids' marks, we don't share those with parents or kids till 8th Grade. Completely agree about not having tuitions, because we are not a board that has high numbers-so not many international schools coaching classes exist. Also, about a teacher getting paid more if a grade performs better- that does not work. What if the grade has special needs? What if they progress more, but don't score an A-star? All learning and progress are relative and marks can't be used to incentivize teachers, just like they should not be used to incentivize kids. I could simply set easier papers then all would have a 99%. Having said that, teachers don't get paid enough. It is tiring, we are overworked, and despite "vacations" we actually end up working 12-14 hours all year round. I wish society understood teachers better. Thanks for this podcast, though. This is by far one of the best podcasts I've come across because it reminds me of how flawed the Indian education system is/was. It made my going to school one of the most dreadful experiences of my life, which makes me really appreciate and be grateful for where I am right now. Far far away from standardized testing and tonnes of rote learning lol. I wouldn't have found my calling sooner in life if it weren't for the shit I was made to learn before it. Some with high tolerance managed to roll with how flawed the system is while the others that couldn't make sense of it, developed a bad taste for learning
