Because the main issue isn’t really fatherlessness, it’s an issue, but it’s a more socioeconomic issue why gangs are so prevalent. When socioeconomical standards aren’t sufficient, crime rates increase

@@7blueblood Except this isn't the case in many of the poorest parts of the country. Appalachia being a prime example. The problem is actually caused by people having an overinflated sense of self worth causing their economic situation to not match their idea of what it should be. Most of the people who consider themselves economically disadvantaged have far more than people who are perfectly happy with what they have.

@@7blueblood WRONG. Even when poor, people don't turn to crime unless they're immoral. There are two parent, church going, one income families that are poor but law abiding and industrious. The reality is that women live in the world of feelings. They discount the importance of logic and morality. When they raise kids alone, their kids don't value righteousness.

All this is from one guy's perspective on his own neighborhood. I'm Mexican American, born in Los Angeles, but I grew up only a few miles east, in the suburbs, where it's not like this gangland, at all. The suburb I grew up in is 90% Mexican American, but middle class and pretty quiet. I'm 65 now and have never had contact with gang culture. Isn't it funny what "bubbles" we live in?

I was born in 1954 in the San Fernando Valley about 25 north of where this video was shot. Gang culture happened way before then. My dad would tell my sister and I where the dividing lines were in our town, back when he was in school. Lines did not get crossed without trouble. One of my dad's best friends was Chicano and my dad tried to walk to his house one day and was stopped by the local gang. Before there was bad trouble, my dad told them who he was going to see. It turned out everyone in the neighborhood was afraid of Dad's friend and didn't want to make him mad. So, they walked my dad to his friend's house and then ran away.
When I was in grade school, if you say the word Chicano you would get beat up. Back then, it was considered a racial slur. 8 years later there were college degrees in Chicano Studies. I moved away from Los Angeles area in 1965 and then I moved back again in 1994. The house I rented had bars on the windows and doors and barbed wire across the top of the gate in our driveway. We heard gunshots almost any night. When I mentioned that to my father, he told me how much better it was since a gang truce was declared. I moved away again in 1998. California isn't home to me anymore. But the one thing that hasn't changed is the car culture.
I'm so glad to hear things have calmed down to a more peaceful existence in Los Angeles.

I might come across as ignorant, but I had no idea East LA still has so many gangs & that they are so active, I thought it was more in the past like the 80's or 90's.
I was born in Mexico, but at the age of 4 the whole family moved to Fillmore, a small farming town in Ventura County, about 1 1/2 Hrs north from Los Angeles. Grew up among a lot of agriculture of Orange, Lemon & Avocado tress, a very simple life. I then moved to LA to enroll in Arts School & got my AA in Fashion Design & stayed for work & never looked back. I'm now 57 yrs old, lived mostly in the San Gabriel Valley (comprised of several cities on the east side of LA). I now live in Montebello, a very quiet beautiful city that borders East LA. Been here for the past 24 yrs, I really love it.
Since downtown LA is so close, I don't have to go on the Freeway. Instead, I usually take the streets which means I go through East LA to get to work. I know very well all the streets/places that were featured in this video. I also stop and get a bite to eat or get Pan (bread) or Tamales from my favorite Mexican bakery.
Never once did I feel threaten or afraid. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, because most likely I came across a gang member while walking the street or at the bakery store standing in line at the cash register & had no idea.
I know people are going to say I should have known by all the tattoos & stuff, but I see skate-boarders all the time with tattoos covering most of there bodies and they are not a gang member. In other words, I try not to judge people on how they look. Instead I admire the amount of skill it took to create such beautiful art, that's all.
If you were wondering how I look, I don't have any tattoos & my skin color is the same as Andre. Not all Mexicans are brown in color, just like the US, Mexico was colonized by Europeans too. The difference is that in Mexico they mixed with the indigenous people much more & very early on which created what we call the mestizo (mixed race with brown skin). Mexican people come in all complexions, some are white with colored eyes (I have cousins with green eyes) to Dark brown skin, which I find beautiful & very attractive!!
FYI, King Taco is overrated. If I'm hungry for some real good tacos, I usually stop by at a food truck or food stand, but I only stop if they have the Al Pastor meat on a skewer (spit-grilled) like you see at 37:33 in the video, that is s must for me, if they don't, I don't buy. If they do, you have a better chance of having very good authentic Al Pastor tacos (my favorite) Even Peter Santenello said it (37:08) "The Other Place Might Be Good But This Might Be Next Level". You can really taste the difference.

    • @LAMan394

Filmore is not LA. I'm from LA but never in a gang either. I grew up in gang neighborhoods in LA but I never had any problems. When asked where you're from, the best answer is "nowhere." Then they know you're not someone who is a threat. But you still need to show respect for everyone.

Finally seeing some of the sights of Southern California! This is where the best tacos live!! :)
With respect to your question, remember Mexico is a huge country just like the USA. All of the border states (California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas) have large Mexican populations which have a strong influence on the local cultures especially in the southern parts of the states. But just like California has a different culture than Texas, there different Mexican communities and differences in the way they've blended into their regional American cultures.
Just to take my favorite example - FOOD! - the "Mexican food" in southern CA is quite different from that in northern CA, and both are pretty different from "Tex Mex" which is Texas style Mexican food. And Arizona / New Mexico Mexican food has different regional influences as well, you will see different chilis and spices, different dishes, different culinary influences. And if you travel within Mexico, the food in Baja California is totally different than what you find in Oaxaca or the Yucatan.

Mexican culture is everywhere in United States. It is different where ever you go. Mexico is a big country. They have close to 130million people. Mexican food is the best food. It also is different depending on where you are. The Mexican people either American mexican or someone from Mexico that moved here are generally great people. Mostly they are super hard workers. I live in an area where the population of Hispanic people is very high. I live in North Carolina we don’t go to the cities ox California. Yep, usually here when you sign off. This was interesting, I had some exposure to it from my hometown, my ex mother in law lived in the "barrio" or Chicano side of town and on weekends they would be at the park two blocks from her house and we would see the low riders going up and down the streets. That was back in the mid-1980s in the Texas panhandle. So, it's everywhere. I like that guy's work, I'll have to check him out. I love learning about other cultures.
Why don't you put together a video about your hometown, your country. I have to admit, I don't know much about Portugal outside of the WWII stuff and the history around the regime changes (I'm a historian, it's a thing with me). But I would LOVE to see your town, culture, and hey,, even food. You see a lot of Texas (and the US), so we're interested in what you have.
BTW: check out what's going on in the Texas panhandle right now. The largest grass fire in the history of the state is happening, they say 500+ buildings are burned to the ground, a couple of little towns, lots of cattle and farm machinery are gone too. It has missed my hometown of Amarillo and everyone I know is safe but this thing is huge. They said on the news about 2 hours ago that the fire line (where the fire is spreading) is over 400 miles long. It's truly scary. I know those places, those people, spent 34 years of my life up there and still have family and friends.

Something about a street taco that is helping a family improve their future just tastes better. Thanks for covering this, when you hear people throw around the term marginalized, this is what that looks like. Some people get quite rich by keeping them down, always taking money to "solve the problems" while making sure they never get solved so the money keeps coming. Go visit the place people, more money on the streets means less problems on the streets, just don't act a fool because it's their country and their culture and they deserve respect - same as anywhere else. Awesome food, fun times, good things to see and do. But can and will drag you down if you get caught up. I remember gun fights in front of my elementary school, watching it go down on recess. Early 90’s then.

Married to a Mexican/American, few ever call him a Chicano, and thankfully, the culture is different here than in LA. As in no gangs. It's God, family, country, cars (mostly Audis😂) better dressed too. Nice lady and her husband have the best street tacos around and another lady and her daughter sell the best tamales on Saturday ❤I make great tamales but theirs....melt in your mouth! However, never met anyone that's better than my mother in laws!❤

I'm from northern California and I know from visiting L.A and as long as you're not flashy and big balling the gangs are chill they won't bother you if you don't bother them or give them a reason to pay attention to you. And women won't scream at you in Portugal but are you riding around In a sixty five Impala convertible on hydrochloric 😂
23 street tacos are unlike any other especially in Hispanic areas.

A similar thing with labels: Amish people in the US will/do call other non-Amish white people "English" too. Which is funny, because a lot of the places where the Amish are in the US, they're surrounded by people of German descent, not English 😂

I grew up in Southern California, and college more North in San Francisco. Chicanos in San Francisco were less gang related and more political activist, racial and Socialist. All of us of all cultures were more relaxed then. I had friends in all cultures. Instead of fighting over differing opinions we just disagreed and moved on with our lives, no problem. The power of hurt feelings is new bs. I speak of the 60's and 70's

He spoke about the Chicanos did not buy the land when they had the opportunity. Then you see the amount this man paid for his specialty car. This is a choice, land (very expensive) or stuff (ephemeral).

9:18 very true LA been had gangs since the 40s and 50s it really got alive in the 80s 90s and early 2000s. Till this day it's better than what it was but it's still active. Certain street you can't cross over and yes gangs still out there especially all over southcentral LA places like Inglewood Watts Compton Crenshaw Long Beach many more that's in South Central is like this. This is East LA. You want to see alot of gang territory watch some videos of South Central. It's a famous areas from movies to the known rappers and gangstas that was living there or started the gangs on their block since the 60s

Was born in raised in CA and now live in West Texas (large Mexican descendant population) and CA Chicano culture is unique and differs from TX imo.
*gang culture is alive and well in most of Southern California despite gentrification. I go back yearly and the change to LA has been insane, it’s very strange to see tbh and while there is a lot controversy about the gangs and it’s tie to Chicano culture, there is an element of community that you don’t know about until you experience it.

I was raised on the outskirts of East L.A. so i know every single filming location, slang, steriotypes, of this video. Gangs, have always been a reality there since.. geesh, the 40's i think. Gang fashion has changed thru out time, but, eventually, the dress style, has become a style to where, some people, find that fashion appealing, and adapt without actually "joining a gang". Gangs had spread out to my neighborhood in my youth, but, i just never really took to it. Violence/fighting,was a common reality(attesting to my life, late 70's-late80's) The 80's, were really violent. LOTS OF SHOOTING/Drive bys, until the Mexican Mob outlawed Drivebys in the early 90's. Anyhow,Far as i know, it's never been a "dangerous city for outsiders".(projects exculded). So long as a person didn't display any form of non-verbal dissaproval or Aggression(mad dog stare) haha. "You wouldn't understand ", haha. Anyone can stop by at any great Taco Stand/Restaurant etc, no problem. And believe me"there are Tons of great places to eat in East L.A.. Crazy fact: the "Chicano/Low Rider Culture", are quite popular in Asia, Australia! I was surprised to learn this. Haha.

In America where the economic divide is soo vast, people end up turning to crime to survive, whether it’s as simple as stealing food to even dealing drugs. Sometimes people have to turn to drastic measures to make sure they or their family survives. I myself had to steal food and even sold stuff for a while to make ends meet.
Police have a job to do yes, but they’re shit at it. With how little training it takes to become one, a lot of them take the authority and abuse it, which is why the incarceration rate of lower income people is far higher than anyone in a higher tax bracket
