Ah, VTMB, the game so legendary that every time you mention it, someone reinstalls it. It is truly a flawed gem, a masterpiece under a pile of flaws. With some patching to make it work better it is truly one of the best RPG's out there. Maybe I should get into yet another playthrough of this game... 11/10 this one IMO, one of the best games out there.
Do seriously consider doing a let's play/ play through, though keep in mind it's very much an older game from a different era (it's pretty much peak oughts, as 2000s as it gets). As for the myth of Cain & Abel: one popular anthropological theory is that the legend is a metaphor for the conflict between the pastoral (village-dwelling) peoples represented by Cain and the nomadic hunter-gatherers. Cain (civilization) wins the conflict, but is accursed by God.
Love that explanation! What a cool interpretation. I don't think I've ever thought about it like that. I will definitely consider a Let's Play. At the very least I want to play it for me
Common misconception with the Cain and Abel story, it is often misinterpreted or misrepresented. Not surprising given how many times these stories have been translated or rewritten, especially early Biblical tales from Genesis which are likely retellings of Babylonian or Mesopotamian tales. In the passage Cain and Abel both bring their offerings with it being explicitly stated that Abel brought his best sheep as offerings while Cain only brought crops. I guess it is implied Cain brought his second or third best crops as opposed to the best he had to offer. When you compare the Cain and Abel story to the Babylonian or Mesopotamian stories it was likely derived from, it is more explicitly stated that the murderous farmer god was selfish and did not offer his best crops for sacrifice. Anyway back to the Cain and Abel telling, after God accepts Abels offering but rejects Cains, he says to Cain "Why are you incensed, and why is your face fallen? For whether you offer well or whether you do not, at the tent flap sin crouches, and for you is its longing but you will rule over it." As it was explained to me by my hard ass Boston Priest when I was a kid, God basically told Cain, you half-assed what I asked you to do and if you do what is right, I will accept you like your brother but if you do what is wrong, then sin will take you. Then Cain killed Abel out of envy.
The Genesis makes perfect sense if you read the rest of the old testament. God is a blood thirsty maniac in it. There is like pages dedicated to how to do blood sacrifices to him. Sadly Kain did not know about all of this because that happened later.
It's honestly one of the main reasons why I liked Redemption over Bloodlines. Bloodlines is just too fucking scattered and everywhere, they don't even take the Lore Seriously (Like he just did in The Beginning).. regardless of how much they beat you over the head with it. Even the endings were stupid.
The OT God is a pretty horrible person imo. And then his son shows up and starts telling us what a sweet and wonderful fellow his dad is. Wait, are we talking about the same guy here? Something doesn't add up.
now you know why the Gnostics were a thing. They believed the OT god and the God jesus was referring too were differant. the OT god was the demiurge, god of this reality but created as a pale imitation of the actual god.
