    Keep in mind folks this is standard protocol for dealers to do this. If the part comes with the tank, they must replace it as such. Dealers dont repair broken items, they replace it. This is because Honda Corp offers a standard warranty to the consumer on replaced parts and labor, The dealer wont take a risk on repairing an item since its not something they can warranty effectively. This is also why rodent damage can total out a car, as the whole harness would get replaced, rather than repaired.

  • @mike_f
    @mike_f 5 місяців тому +14

    I remember back in the day when dealers would actually do repairs like that. Back when there were more true gearheads running service departments. Then came the "services advisors" (sales position), bean counters and liability lawyers.

      It's not "needlessly." Replacing the tank with the hose is the proper repair and is how people would expect the dealership to repair a vehicle. They are supposed to bring it back to original. Ivan's repair is fine...nothing wrong with it... but dealer techs aren't allowed to repair that way.

    Your customer should have been absolutely thrilled with your diagnostics, repair, research and advice on this one, Ivan! You probably saved them 2 grand or more and got the car fixed! This is a good reminder how important a TSB search can be. Not only are they sources of important info, they often provide an opportunity to point the customer to a no cost repair at the dealership! Really good stuff!
    I liked that you pulled out the topscan and gave it a go. It certainly has its place. I think it's a great diy scanner or a (very compact!) scanner to have on a road trip when you don't have a lot of equipment with you. Most people who are using a topscan won't have a smoke machine, for example, at least not with them...
    I always look forward to your videos with great anticipation, thanks very much!

    Awesome job!

    I've been using topscan pro since January. I only had to use a traditional scan tool twice since then. It's used every single day. Super convenient and also has immo capabilities. I have done Ram, Honda, and Ford keys without any problems. Thanks Ivan, it was your channel that turned me on to it. Very powerful diagnostic tool.

    Paused @ 4:30 Thank you so much for answering the request to demo the Topdon Topscan. I was very hopeful that you would. Not too bad for general personal use though. It's certainly better than most other options in its price class. But agreed. It could never replace a professional tier scan tool.
    Now the dealer would like to replace the fuel tank with the evap line because that evap line is part of the tank and cannot be detached. VW does this too. I was not aware of the A/C condenser bulletin on those Accords. But common leak points on any modern car are condenser, schrader valves and compressor input shaft seal. Scotty Kilmer loves Honda compressors for that. lol

    Ivan, I just used that same TopScan on the exact same P0445 for my daughters 2009 Saturn Vue. Under 'Active Test' it had both purge and vent control available and worked great. The problem for my daughters was the purge control solenoid has a tiny silicone ring inside of it that had hardened and started leaking. Ordered GM part from RockAuto and it's good to go all because of your videos :)

      A dealer cannot do a repair like this. Its a liability issue. Nothing wrong with this repair, works fine. BUT.... if something were to happen due to a repair of this type that caused any type of safety or other issue then the dealer is held responsible. Even if the customer agrees to the repair as it would be stated in court that the customer does not know the repercussions that a non factory repair could cause, the dealer tech should know better and only do repairs as specified by the manufacturer, all other repairs are on the dealer and or tech doing them. The aftermarket world is not held to same standards and can offer an interim fix as long as customer is informed. Dont blame the dealer tech, blame the industry. Like a doctor in a hospital cannot perform certain procedures but look hard enough and can probably find one that would.

    • @Jumalten001

      Dealer = repaired within OEM Specs. Honda is never going to tell its techs to cut the tubing and use some random one you've got lying around to combine the two.
      Third party Mechanic = Yeah I can get this fixed a few different ways, OEM parts, Aftermarket parts or this DIY way that will cost way less because its a pretty simple fix.
      If you expect your dealer to operate outside of OEM specs then you probably should just buy used cars.

      I hate to say it but Honda has followed GM and have turned to Junk!
      I’ve owned 4 Hondas and all were in the 90’s and early 2000’ and were great.
      In 2017 we bought this exact car. It was nothing but trouble. Sunroof failed, passenger window failed, TPMS computer failed, 2 AC Compressors failed, a AC Condenser failed, and an Engine Computer failed all before 28,000 miles.
      To top it off it started rusting around the back window at 12,000 and the car received a new paint job from the Front Doors back!
      My neighbor bought a Minivan last year and it was in the shop over 300 days of its first 365 days. Long story short they refused to buy it back and completely replaced every wire in the vehicle over a parasitic draw. They did give her $5000 back but now the vehicle has ABS and Airbag issues. She tried to trade it on a Ford Expedition and it’s flagged.

    I don't blame the dealer in their proposed repair because they are constrained in what they can offer for replacement parts. If a new hose necessarily has to come with a new tank, then that's what they do. Is that right? It's debatable, but then they can't be accused of half-assing the repair. Kudos to the dealer for honoring the extended A/C warranty!

    • @thereve
      @thereve 5 місяців тому +8

      I agree - The dealer identified the problem and offered a solution that they were willing to warranty, so I wouldn’t consider that a rip off exactly. Ideally he could have told the customer off the record that a little bit of fuel hose and a couple of zip ties would fix the leak, but I don’t blame him for not agreeing to do that.

The dealership should have offered to repair the A/C under recall and then refer the customer to Ivan for the evap leak. Got another letter in the mail from Honda regarding the fuel pump. It's being recalled due to the cheap plastic fuel pump impeller that may disintegrate over time. They will replace it at no cost to me but I've been waiting for over a year cuz of shortage of parts. This affects many years and models so they're going to need a lot of them made. It's nearly impossible for a dealer or most repair shops to repair a hose that way. At our shop we have to offer a 3 year 36k mile warranty. So if the line breaks in a new place every few months the customer is rarely as understanding afterwards as when they saved money initially. It would be a great repair on your own vehicle or for a customer who truly understands that it is a patch with no warranty if you are able to offer that option.

    These manufactures are just working the angles to milk the consumer. I just had my truck diagnosed (2014 Ram Ecodiesel) for a P203E DEF level sensor intermittent or erratic. Conclusion was the level sensor (ultrasonic type if I read right) is starting to fail. Unfortunately they do not sell the part separate so the whole tank must be replaced. $3205 for the tank with sensors and heater installed, $435 for the work, and another $78 for 4 gallons of DEF.
    I did find a Canadian company that replaces the level sensor (and temp, package deal) with a nice warranty and quick turn around. The catch is they don't stock the tanks so you have to pull the tank, ship to Canada, they turn around in 2 days, and ship it back. Total price would be under $800 but I'd have to do all the work in my backyard (tons of fun). Anyway ... that's my manufacture/dealer complaint of the week.

    I believe the R1234yf is corrosive in itself. It is mildly flammable, which is nuts that it is used in a vehicle. My mom's Camry has it and you have to keep the air on full blast unless you are driving for more than an hour. It's ability to move heat has to be much lower than R134a or R12. Nevermind it's over $600 for 10 pounds.

  • @windward2818
    @windward2818 2 місяці тому

    I think the obvious answer is the customer does not need a new fuel tank for the hose leak.
    An alternative method to fixing the evap line with Silicone tubing would be to use hard line NiCopp tubing (optionally SS tubing as there are no complex bends) with beads. Not as fast as Ivan's approach, because you have to cut the tubing to the proper length and make beads (you will need a beading tool) at both ends. You would then use two SS hose clamps to secure the existing line to the tubing. So the NiCopp (SS) approach would also cost more than Ivan's approach. It's not an easy call. I think if it was my vehicle I would use the NiCopp (SS) approach.
    Which ever approach you use it is important secure the line with tie wraps in order to keep it away from the chaffing surface (edge) which cut the hole in the first place. You could also put high temp plastic convoluted tubing around the repaired area which would increase wear protection.
    To complete the repair the vehicle should be driven to make sure the EVAP OBD II Monitor has passed in particular, and all others in order to get registration (not sure if this is needed in Penn).
    Many times the OEM A/C system lubricant will include UV die from the factory to help identify A/C leaks. If so, with this vehicle, you could use a UV Flashlight (uvBeast) to see if you can identify a leak.

    In my opinion, there are mistakes in dealer part setup or pricing, but no way of identifying and correcting them. Of course, it's less profitable when some errors are corrected, so there is that, too. I needed a transfer case shaft for my '71 Jeep in the 1980's , and I'm convinced the local dealer just had a mistake (+$100) in their pricing. I called twice, and was quoted the same price both times. I called a dealer in the upstate, and purchased it for delivery at my home (-$100). After receiving it, I called the local dealer and asked for a price based on the part number of what I recieved. Local dealer gave me the same price (+$100) as before. Buyer beware - Always!

    The option for automatic or manual in the Topdon dongle only refers to reading the vin number and not whether the car is automatic or manual it’s a little bit confusing and I only realised when it wouldn’t read the vin,I do think the dongles quite good for a DIYer but always get the pro version not the lite,good video as always thanks for making them I have learnt loads from you but sometimes I can watch and still don’t know what you are doing 😂

    Ivan, One thing to consider is that dealers are restricted by their contracts with the manufacturer to always repair a vehicle back to factory specifications and if it's a warranty repair, they must use factory parts to make the repair. This is especially true of vehicles that were sold by that dealer. Therefore, it would follow that the dealer was unable to offer this type of solution to the owner of the vehicle. Some states have additional restrictions for "servicing" dealers that can handcuff a repair of this type in those states.
    Most techs that work in a dealership, and the service writers, are honest, and genuinely want to repair the vehicles they work on the best way possible, at a decent time frame, and the least cost to the owner. The dealer principals, however, are sometimes a completely different story, and restrict their service departments in order to maximize their profits. Service work and used car sales is where the dealerships get their cash flow. It's what supports the dealership in between the new car sales.

You can leave the cable plugged into the dongle, and then all the wear and tear is on the cable itself from being plugged and unplugged into OBD ports. Just my advice.

    My ac condenser had a super tiny leak! The dealer said it took a long time to find it. I knew something was up when my ac didn’t blow cool air coming from both vents or any vents for the matter. I had to argue my case with them because my VIN wasn’t one of those in the recall. Once I brought it back a 2nd time lo and behold that’s when they found the leak and got it replaced under warranty. Things like this shouldn’t break for a car under 100k. My car at that time only had around 40-50k miles. I have a ‘18 accord too but the sport 2.0t. Another major issue was the front wheel bearing was defective and I didn’t even hit anything so that was replaced under warranty too. Honda has definitely gone down in quality.. next time I’m buying a Toyota for long time reliability primarily the ones with the J in the vin so I know it’s manufactured in Japan.

    It's funny how the owner had to bring the car to you and you had to find out on a Honda enthusiast forum about the warranty replacement instead of the dealer letting them know when the car was already in for work. Or you know, Honda reaching out. You'd think with all these car brands keeping these vehicles constantly connected for "system updates" they'd be able to let you know through the infotainment system about recalls and warranty programs.

      Pretty sure there was no complaint about no ac when it was at the dealer. Extended policy warranty covers defects beyond the factory warranty when there is a failure. I had a customer bring me her vehicle outside of work with a failed engine. I did a little research and found it may be covered by the manufacturer and let her know. Told her to find all maintenance records and then call dealer with vin number and ask them. 3 months later she finally got a new engine installed no charge.

    They do say not to use r-134a sniffer on the r-1234yf systems due to r-1234yf is somewhat flammable. Not sure exactley what the 134a sniffer does that could cause that to be an issue. I do know our 1234yf sniffer seems to detect refrigerant in the open air no where near a vehicle but cant seem to find a leak unless it large enough to see with dye and a black light. Hate those things.
