    I have used my eCHS stove on my last backpacking trip. Works perfectly. I was boiling 2 cups of water with about 14 mL fuel in 3.5 minutes using Olicamp XTS pot and Al flashing windscreen. Thanks so much.

    1. First priority of the Ver.2 stove was easy making with familiar tools only. Priority of performance was 2nd or later. The easy CHS has more beautiful tornado flame and longer burn time. To making the easy CHS needs circle cutter.
    2. 10sec boot position brings longer burn time with almost same power. And can get more beautiful tornado!

    I made a eCHS today using Redbull can and some kind of JB welding ( I used Araldite, that was available here). I didn't have 0.8mm drill, so I used 1mm just to test. The diameter was 41mm roughly opened with a knife and a rounded file to finish.
    The fuel was 95% ethanol, widely available here in Brazil at any gas station ( we also use pure ethanol for cars since 70's). I plan to test with 99,3% Ethanol soon, we can buy it at some drugstores.
    The boot time was around 10s, boil in 5min ( 400ml at 20oC) and burn time was 10 minutes. I thought it would last much less because of the 1mm jets.
    I think that the flame is a bit strong, I'll consider building a shimer and/or using 37mm. I thought the flame a little bit yellow at top, maybe some impurities in the fuel, but the can was not dark. Also, the these two factors can be due to the 1mm jets or because I'm using ethanol ( seems that you guys like to use methanol, right?)
    Overall, not so bad for a first try. It already fulfill my needs even without any optimization. I had an 2010 soda can stove that took 2:30 min to boot, but burns for 13 minutes.

      @xBenjourx 8 років тому +3

      +Jonathan Araujo Jonathan, I can see this is a message from 7 months ago but I thought I'd let you know, ethanol will burn with a slightly yellow top portion of flame when compared to methanol. That is just the nature of the element. This will happen especially with lower purity ethanol due to inclusion of methyl ethyl ketone (for example) or taste aversion agents like 'Bitrex'. Hope this helps!

    • @Jones12ax7
      @Jones12ax7 8 років тому +2

      Ben Harrison Thanks! I thought the yellow flame was due to 1mm jet instead of 0.8mm, but now I know! I tested the stove on a hike to Pico da Bandeira here in Brazil and ir worked great!

    • @xBenjourx
      @xBenjourx 8 років тому +2

      +Jonathan Araujo the size of the jets can have varied effects. Sometimes bigger means there's less fuel pressure through jets so cooler flame and sometimes it can be too small that it's not fully combusting so yellow flame. My educated guess is that the quality of the alcohol is mostly to blame.

    your attention to detail u give to all your different stove designs and construction is amazing. question one: what kind of alcohol do u use? question two: do you ever plan to make a video comparing the pros and cons your various different designs(to compare them against each other...) qusetion 3: which design would u recommend for viewers to build given all factors such as: toughness in field, fuel use, boil time, etc...?

    Thanks for your response. I have already make the 3 pieces CHS, and works so nice. I think easy CHS is is even faster to make, but the problem is is difficult to find JB WELD in Greece, don't know even if it is imported at all. Of course the finish you give, it is always outstanding, better than factory made, just been curious to ask if this version CHS would work as good with no JB WELD. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.

    I see, so these questions are related. In order to get the 10s boot time you need a smaller opening and that's why you need the circle cutter, correct? Is this difference in inner diameter the only difference between PHSv2 and ECHS?
    It wasn't clear to me that the 10s boot time was what you were saying is better (I thought you were indicating that a faster boot time is better). A note in the video indicating that you trade fast boot for longer burn time would help.
    Thank you Tetkoba-san.

    Nice, simple, effective stove. I just wonder if you can cut the upper piece at 40mm, so that you can return the 5mm of the outside piece, inwards in order not to use JB WELD. Thank you in advance for the info and the great stoves you present to us.

    I have just tested building this stove using the cheaper 240ml can with the chiseled bottom rim. Prototype was successful! Also discovered that if the wall of the can is left longer than the inner piece the rim can by 2mm the outer wall can be folded down like the your CHS-U without needing to use JB weld. The difficulty is cutting the top without the aid of a circle cutter (Don't have one.).
    The stove bottom is too hot to touch while in operation; this tells me that I'm getting something wrong in my build.

      Steven Varner Thanks for the tip :) I managed to find circle cutters in an arts and crafts store. A local drinks brand has started to make their product using a 320ml can that looks like a scaled up redbull can. I'm going to see if it's worth fabricating an ECHS from them.

    同じ直径缶の場合、hoop周辺部位の熱容量のわずかな差が噴射開始時間を決定するような気もする。因みに、フランジを削除したFREVO stove群ですと、瞬間的に噴射開始します。 というような我田引水で(笑) 目下の所、JSBはフランジレスのキャピラリーフープストーブを追求中です。もちろん横剛性がやや弱いことも、トレードオフです。何処まで時短出来るのか極めてから戻ってきます(笑)

    Tetkoba-san, may I please ask two questions?
    1.What is the difference between the "easy Capillary Hoop Alcohol Stove" and "Pipeless Hoop Stove Ver.2"?
    2.At 0:33 you say the inner diameter is critical for boot time and at 1:30 "cut here: boot time less than 3 secs" and "cut here: boot time 10secs" "very critical", yet the stove you demonstrate seems to have been cut for boot time 10secs, which we see at 1:50. Why did you cut for a long boot time?

    I just finished my stove and lit it. I can see the flame coming from my jets and the center flame spirals like in the video, but stays yellow. It is blue where it is coming out of the jets. I have tried making the jets a little bigger but it did not seem to have any effect. Now, I am using Isopropyl Alcohol since that is all I have until I can get other tomorrow. Do you think it is the alcohol I am using or a different problem with my build?

    • @tetkoba
      @tetkoba  10 років тому +3

      I'm not sure exact reason because I've not used the isopropyl alcohol. But I guess it is characteristic of the isopropyl. I also guess the isopropyl needs more oxygen.

      Ray Camp It was the isopropyl alcohol. I used methyl and got a nice blue flame.

    • @bulruq
      @bulruq 10 років тому

      Ray Camp Iso can be used in a pinch but has a couple of drawbacks; as you discovered it burns differently because it has a much higher carbon content, burns less efficiently, and produces more soot. Also, most of it available in drugstores is either 9 or 30% water. If you HAVE to use isopropyl alcohol, get the 91% stuff. Methyl alcohol produces the best results but for some reason "Big Brother" is clamping down and trying to restrict supplies and monitor who is buying it. You used to be able to buy it easily at any hardware or paint store by the quart or even a gallon container, but those days are GONE. My own educated guess would be that it has some potential use by terrorists. In the winter months the easiest (but NOT cheapest!) source is a gas line anti-freeze like "Heet". There are cheaper brands but many contain ethyl alcohol instead. Ethyl works but is less efficient.

      Yes, the alcohol fuel in the tank will be boil. Old traditional alcohol stoves such as trangia must wait the boil for jet spouting. But the CHS will began to spout before fuel boiling.

    It is difficult to cut 10sec boot time position by normal box cutter. The easiest way is circle cutter.
    Number of creases is also different. But there is little effect.

    Tetkoba is a master at building alcohol stoves buf personally i HATE this Design gof several reasons.
    1. After a few burns the food grade epoxy and JB weld will let go. If it lets go during a burn you have a fire ball to deal with.
    2. You MUST USE a pot stsbd
    3. Tall alcohol flames are succeptible to interferencd from the wind.

    • @MatoNupai
      @MatoNupai 8 років тому

      Take a look at the Efrevo SP stove by Tektoba. Much better Design. No JB weld and he folds the aluminium over to anchor tge two pieces together so you don't have to worry about a fire ball as yoy do with this HORRIBLE DESIGN.

    I made one of these with 5.5 oz prune juice can. The smallest drill bit I had was .9mm, burns out 5-6 minutes on 15ml. Burns super high! Easy to make. One problem I had, as soon as I add a wind screen the thermal feedback was too much, alcohol boiled out and I lost fuel and had a slower burn time, could not get 2 cups to boil with 15ml. Could be my existing windscreen does not have enough air vents. Without a windscreen I was able to get Fire-Maple HX pot to boil 2 cups in 3:45 with pot bottom 1.75 inches from the burner. My burner is 30mm high. Not sure if it will ever be practical in the field without a working windscreen. It is a very cool design and extremely easy to build, Domo Tetkoba!

    • @rickinthehills
      @rickinthehills 10 років тому

      I have worked out the issues with the windscreen. I find that I need a minumum burner to pot distance of 2 inches. This burner also works much better with an HX pot, not very well with a smooth bottom pot, too much heat waste. Keep in mind that my burner holes are .9mm.

    • @rickinthehills
      @rickinthehills 9 років тому

      For a windscreen I made a Captain Paranoia cone which holds the HX pot 3.25 inches/82mm. Bottom rim of HX sat on cone edge, promoted updraft through HX fins. 3:15 to hard boil with 15ml, 4:00 burn out. Super stable pot support, very windproof. I can only get this efficiency with HX pot because I have larger holes and extra creases, I created a blow torch. With non-hx pot my flame goes around the pot bottom too much.
