I actually loved Hao Du's father by the end of the series and felt sad for him. He was the one who encouraged Hao Du to take that leap and final step towards Leyan by competing in the ring. He wanted Hao Du to follow his heart because in his life, that's what he didn't do.

So, obviously Hao Du at first treats Le Yan as a bodyguard, because he works for her father and follows his foster father's orders. Maybe finding LY after long missing period (ep 26), HD realizes LY is a kind, resilient person, always generous with the poor people even suffering unpleasant things, which makes him admire her and begin to have special feelings with her. Am I right? I'm not sure because so many people say Hao Du likes Le Yan from the start, even before the day HD picks up LY's amulet in ep.1. Perhaps they mean from the day HD stays at the palace and takes responsibilty for protecting the palace (this is shown in ep.32). Then HD see the princess and likes her when he was a little boy but always hides his feeling in his heart. But the video above captures the growth and progress clearly. Haizz, I'm so confused. Anyway, love this couple so much and they have a happy ending finally. ^^

And he just doesn’t do anything about it until his love continues to grow more and more (plus the overall story is about our main leads so HD development is a much slower progress) that’s how I see it anyway :)

I've done watching long ballad last monday(it took 4 days to finished) it was so good from cast to story line and I'm hoook with hao du and leyan.
