Breathin’: The Eddy Zheng Story - A Mini-Documentary on the School-to-Prison-to-Deportation Pipeline

On September 12, 2016, The California Endowment and the Asian Prisoner Support Committee, in collaboration with Khmer Girls in Action, hosted a screening of Ben Wang’s "Breathin': the Eddy Zheng Story." Arrested at 16 and tried as an adult for kidnapping and robbery, Eddy Zheng served over 20 years in California prisons and jails. The powerful film paints an intimate portrait of Eddy - the prisoner, the immigrant, the son and the activist - on his journey to freedom, rehabilitation and redemption.
After the film, a multi-generational group of panelists discussed the impact of the school-to-prison-to-deportation pipeline on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), an issue all too familiar in the Long Beach community given its large Cambodian, Tongan and Pacific Islander populations and their struggles as immigrant communities - the very issue that is central to Eddy Zheng’s experience as the youngest prisoner in San Quentin State Prison.
