I remember watching this back then while in college. It was just as mind blowing to me and I was into prog rock and metal. What's really amazing is that this was done live, no autotune, no backing track, no drum machine. Also, for that time, this is a pretty good recording. Most music on TV at that time sucked soundwise.
i totally agree - as manic as that sounded, it was still done with precision and greatness, and yes your right ... some thing that is truly lacking right now
Focus are (yes - they are still performing, although with a different lineup: Thijs van Leer, the vocalist/keys/flute, etc, is still the frontman, and I believe one other early member is still with them) a Dutch progressive rock band, with 17 studio albums released over 51 years! Thijs van Leer (pronounced like "ice" with a "T") is classically trained on both flute and piano, as well as several other instruments, and also trained in formal jazz. The band as a whole have a number of great songs / albums - mostly instrumental in the early years. I'd recommend three more songs from their earlier albums, as well as one whole album: "Sylvia", Eruption", and "Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!" are great songs, while the album "Hamburger Concerto" deserves to be listened to as a whole - at over 20 minutes, the Concerto itself takes the entire second side of the original LP. A little long for reaction videos, but ... 🙂
wow, this is amazing knowledge, thank you for your view and thank you so much for the information, I love learning about bands I'm enjoying, and I will definitely be doing one of these songs at some point for a first time reaction. And ill give the 'Hamburger Conserto' a listen in my own time perfect amount of time from work to home lol Thank you for you great input :-)
@Azimov-Music Hi I have the impression that you were pleasantly surprised. if this is the case and you have been piqued by curiosity, I also recommend Anonymous 2, questions answers questions hamburger concerto and eruption. these are just a few examples of the talent, eclecticism and extensive musicality of this essentially instrumental group.😊
This is great thank you :-), Yes! I most definitely was pleasantly surprised, I've never really been into 70s music but judging by this, I've never given 70s music a chance because its great!!
Didn't you want to see the standing ovation? They played their song in 1/2 the time because the TV show only gave them a short period of time. It was amazing wasn't it?? Jethro Tull vibes. Have you reacted to Jethro Tull, especially live?
Ohh no I havnt, I’ve only ever heard aqualung by jethro tull before … can you recommend a song for me please? And yes it truly was amazing 🤩… I was utterly impressed
My favorite Jethro Tull song is We Used To Know. I also love the popular favorites Locomotive Breath, and Aqualung. I actually prefer these songs in their studio versions. But Jethro Tull have many performances live where Ian Anderson is very expressive in his playing and theatrics. I suggest just giving a listen to some of his live performances. @@Azimov-REACTS
Perfect thank you, I've added the songs onto my list - I've recently done Locomotive Breath, if you haven't checked it out here's the link 😊 ua-cam.com/video/L7XC7XeH39A/v-deo.html
The tempo is insane! If you check the album version, the difference is huge. The legend is that they didn't have a lot of time to play the song so they just had to play faster! ;)
@@Azimov-REACTS Not even a legend. The truth. And since you are a Brit, you might like this. The guitarist Jan Akkerman was a big inspiration and is still a guitar hero of a little known guitarist by the name of Brian May.
Thijs certainly grabbed the spotlight and to my mind overshadows the amazing guitar work of Jan Akkerman. Jan headed off on his own in the mid 70s and is still performing with his band, though mostly in mainland Europe. Fortunate to see him in the UK in early 22. His work encompasses jazz, blues and classical as did Focus. Strong influences from Bach and Django Reinhardt. Look out for Focus live at Texel in 1971; a stuuning live set. They're not to everyone's taste but the musical ability of all four members of the band is undeniable.
UA-cam suggestion brought me here. This television performance ( midnight special I think) they weren't giving as much time as they needed before there was going to be a commercial break. So they played the song double time. Another song/ video to react to is Edgar Winter's Frankenstein. Enjoy ✌️🤠🏞️🐂
Amazing, thankyou for the view .. . great bit of knowledge, it would make sense as to it being so hectic haha. Thankyou for the suggestion, I've added it to my list and it will be done either next week or the week after
Focus was a Dutch progressive rock band formed in Amsterdam in the late 60s. You started the video after the introduction by Gladdys Night. That is a shame as it also showed the exact date of this performance in 1973. They played this song at almost twice the original speed because of a time restriction. They simply opted to play the song faster instead of cutting it short :) The guitarist Jan Akkerman was voted best guitarist in the world by the globally renowned and very nfuential magazine (at that time) Melody Maker.
Wow, I didn't know that about the guitarist Jan Akkerman - thank you for the information :-), I'm definitely going to do another Focus song in the future, I'm very interested in what else they have to offer
"Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!" is another epic song...(instrumental) as is "Love Remembered" one of the most beautiful tunes I've ever heard
"Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!" has been suggested a lot - so i will definitely be doing this song at some point Love remembered is a new one - il add it to the backlog Thank you for your view and recommendations - it means a lot :-)
Extremey talented and tight playing band ... The rhytm section was rock solid, the guitarist was way ahead of his time and Thijs van Leer is one of a kind ... What is not to like?
I also think you should check out the album version, it is a 7 minute song they played in the three minutes the producers allotted them! I got to experience them play it live in 72 when they plated the Saturday night concert series at the U of Miami on the patio! It was a lot of fun! On another subject I noticed the Srat on your home page. Do you play? Have you ever heard of Stevie Ray Vaughan? His performance of Texas Flood Live at El Mocambo will blow your mind and start you down a glorious rabbit hole!
haha no wonder it was so quick and manic!! - I bet that gig was amazing, do they still tour? Ive tried to dabble but i never carried it on, so i know the basics but that's about it, my Brothers Best Friend is signer and guitar player in a local band. No ive never heard of Stevie Ray Vaughan - its been added to the list - thank you for the recommendation
Your surprise was no surprise to me.
hahaha😂😂🤣
Prog rock from half a century ago, when musicians were professional instrumentalists and originality was appreciated.
Fabulous musicianship in this one, but it DID take us all by surprise. Thanks for your reaction.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching :-)

Had a quick look through your vids and couldn't find it so, for more 70s vibe and similar vocal gymnastics - Deep Purple, Sweet Child in Time.

It was called 'Alternative Rock' ' also 'Progressive Rock' in the early 70s. It was popular in northern Europe centered around Amsterdam.
Amsterdam ... now why doesnt that surprise me 🤣🤣😂😂

That's great thank you I've added it to my list
Love your reaction to this song 😂😂😂😂. Puts me in mind of the 70’s version of Jack Black 😂😂😂
🤣thank you thats great to hear 🙂
The Old Grey Whistle Test verson is less manic and better in every way
ok perfect, is Old Grey Whistle test version the album version or is it another version?
