I grew up in Maine and have lived in Arizona the last 10 years and I don’t think I could ever move away from here.. love raising my family here! The heat in the summer doesn’t bother us

I have lived in Texas my entire life. I have heard that Arizona can feel a bit hotter, but I would say I have to disagree with the above comment. I love summer time and getting to go to the beach and do fun summer things, but I will never get used to the heat. And it feels like it gotten hotter over the years. Even my kids get beat down by the heat pretty quick and they love running around and being outdoors. If you aren’t in the water, the heat is miserable, even just at 90 degrees… and had weeks over 100+ degree weather this summer!

Good place to raise a family.
No crocodiles. We have no ocean but we have Lake Superior. We have almost no bugs most of the year. 4 seasons. 😍

Honestly, you guys should check out Michigan. It has everything you're wishing for. Motor city - car heavy. Michigan is protected by the great lakes so it's very safe from extreme weather. It has all seasons, and is laid back, family oriented. Metro Detroit is a melting pot of educated people with so many different backgrounds. I would look into Royal Oak or Birmingham. Don't knock it until you look into it. Visit in the fall to see the changing leaves!

North carolina! It's alot different then South Carolina. It's more like Cali but add humidity and bugs. It's a mix of both worlds. Beach and mountains. It's beautiful, clean, diversified, so family oriented, so much to do. I recommend you check it out.

I know your values likely don’t align with those of NY state, but upstate (not NYC area) is sooo different! I’m in the northern Catskills and the nature is stunning. It’s very rural so you do have to drive a ways to get to anything, BUT traffic is non existent so you can travel quickly and easily by car with no stress. Land is cheap. There are many homeschool groups locally and it’s a really loving community! Plus lots of motor sports for Doug haha

South Carolinian here, born and raised! My husband and I moved to the Charleston area and absolutely hated it for the same reasons. All of South Carolina is not like that with the crazy humidity and bugs. We moved to Aiken, SC 5 years ago and absolutely love it. There is such community here, less bugs, less humidity. It was voted best small town by Southern Living magazine. It is like the perfect size though. We grew up in super small towns in SC and this one isn’t so small you see the same people all the time but small enough where you might see someone you know at the grocery store from time to time. We also have a great community with our church full of young parents and kids.

Also, a lot of our friends here are part Vietnamese (they are in the same family though but we do have diversity here).

Literally everything you’re describing is Michigan!! The Great Lakes are mini oceans, an endless amount of things to do in nature within driving distance, the most beautiful weather and 4 seasons, no outrageous bugs or storms, family values, diversity (depending on the area of course), great homeschool laws (one of the best states to homeschool honestly!), the list goes on and on! I feel like with Covid people have the idea we’re a mini California in terms of politics and values but just like what you were saying there’s much that gets twisted in the media. We live in the sweetest diverse Christian community. I’m so thankful we get to raise our family here so I just had to share!

Look into Lakewood ranch fl. You & your little family would absolutely LOVE it.
Close the the beach, tons of outdoor things to do for young families. I know you always say it’s hard to leave Cali because your so use to your little bubble. I can relate so much!
Lakewood ranch is like a bubble. We moved from Texas (our bubble) to here & our only regret is not moving here sooner. Lakewood ranch is the best kept secret even the surrounding areas Sarasota, Bradenton, Palmer ranch……

It is hard to find "ideal" place because of weather. Florida is great in winter and spring but bad in summer. Northern states are great in summer but not sure if you are ready for snow in April. One thing you guys can think about is Florida (Naples, Miami, Sarasota etc) in late fall, winter and spring. And late spring, summer when school is out you have different "vacation" place. I mean I didn't discover sliced bread lol lot's of retired people are doing it...but if you are flexible with your work definitely something to think about.

I hope you guys have a good trip! Cour d’Alene is beautiful! But cold.

Idaho’s biggest fan here! I have lived here since I was 10 and my husband is a native. It’s so funny seeing people say it snows 9 months out of the year or it’s super cold and hearing you say that Boise looks brown because when you come here and see there’s a mountain 20 minutes outside of Boise, but nothing big. Within an hour or two you can be to the best mountains, lakes, camping, fishing, hunting, and every outdoor activity possible. Every season there is something fun to enjoy. It’s not humid, it has every season, and it has the ability to be in the city, suburbs or in the legit middle of nowhere all within an hour drive time. You’re completely right that Idahoans don’t love people from California coming here, but it’s more so for the reason you said of the people coming and running for different offices or finding positions of power to change our state. Some of my greatest friends are from California and it’s more so just a joke that they’re embarrassed to tell people where they’re from, but no one I know is rude about that though there are unfortunately rude people everywhere. I’ve traveled to almost every state and if you’re someone that likes good food, good craft beer, outdoor activities, the mountains, and are more conservative in your values Idaho is literally the perfect place to be. My husband and I own an acre in Caldwell which is a bit more small town but right in the same valley as Boise and we absolutely love it. If you guys have any questions or want any good recommendations I’ve got them! CDA is definitely prettier than Boise btw, but it is colder and it is a little bit more of a richy area and people tend to be a bit more of that mindset that you guys want to get away from and more on the not so down to earth side from what I’ve seen.

Those of us who were born and raised in the cda area are very down to earth. What we are not is socialist, and we don't need Californians moving into the area and turning it into the same sh!t hole that California is.
Never ceases to amaze me how Democrats will vote in policies that destroy the state they live in, then move because those policies make life unbearable in their state. Then move to another state and vote in the exact same policies.

Temecula, CA has everything you mentioned. Less than an hour from Oceanside. Leans more conservative but very diverse. Still affordable compared to other parts of Cali since it's a growing community. You could get land in wine country and grow all those fruit trees you love. Old Town is so cute and has the cutest restaurants. The best part is everyone who lives here is family oriented. I know you homeschool but the schools are great which I think speaks to the parent involvement.

Idaho is where I was born and raised moved back in June (husband’s military) and Lordy I forgot how RUDE people are. Boise is definitely more open and friendly then the rest of the state. But the food variety is definitely lacking lol.

So excited for you all! My best friend moved here from CA last year and I've lived in Idaho for 5 yrs. Really nice people, where I'm at anyway...I live on a little homestead 40 minutes west of Boise by sweet country, all-American, small town folks who have been welcoming in every way (especially when they found out we are like-minded =). We appreciate the mild winter where we are and visiting the surrounding mountains often. We were just in Coeur D'Alene last month and LOVE it there too...all their lakes and trees. My sister in Oregon was sick of it there and just got a new job and is moving to Coeur D Alene! We both homeschool too and that's one reason that drew her here. Honestly about Boise, we don't care for it that much. We go there for date night once in a while. There is a lot to do though and I have found each part of Idaho is so unique. Have a great time!!

My grandma aunt and cousins are in Idaho and in Coure de alene Idaho, when i visit we are always at Hayden lake. It’s one of my favorite places. There used to be a candle store near there where she made drip style home candles it was the best candles I have ever burned or bought. We are in AZ from ca, Idaho has so many amazing people. Except when you tell people your from Ca 😆 they always say “ if you move here don’t make Idaho California “😂 Az is the same too when I tell people

I can't believe your sister doesn't like Tennessee 😱 I don't know anyone that moved from Ca to Tennessee that didn't say it was the best decision & they wished they did it sooner. Lol Well if you want a place with no bugs good luck finding that one. 😂 You won't be able to have land & animals without bugs. 😆

I agree with Tn! Middle or East Tennessee is where it’s at. Tons to do, beautiful, and great values

You should look into Northern Arizona, specifically Prescott area. You’ll be able to find land, diversity, lots to do especially outdoors, more family values, rich culture, plus it’s beautiful!!! I hope you find what you’re looking for. 🤍
