It's called "rosin" and used to add friction to the hairs of a bow to prevent slippage when sliding across the strings. All the members of the bowed orchestral strings (violin, viola, cello and bass) use it.

Thank you@@indrakoa8829for telling me about the mini dynamo for guitar strings. I was not commenting on the device being used but rather her comment "the chalk or wax that they put on violin strings." There are so many terms used in music and some are specific to particular instruments. For example, I have never seen a mini dynamo, let alone had the opportunity to use one -- it would have been cool if Bach or Beethoven had one back then, right? I just wanted to introduce a new vocabulary word to everyone just in case you go to a philharmonic symphony, or hear a string quartet or sit for chamber music and you see people rubbing their bows against an "eraser" you can proudly exclaim "they are rosin-ing their bows!" Knowledge is power and thank you again for the information about mini dynamos; maybe I'll go a guitar store and ask to see one.
