The term sex slave is usually used when people are taken or trafficked to be used as sex slaves. They are kept in rooms and are visited sole for sex. From what I’m hearing the Muslim took the slaves and they were kept as slaves (doing chores and work for their owner), the owners were permitted to have sex with them. So why not just call them slaves.

I was almost on the verge of leaving Islam. Because of SEX SLAVERY. I was a new muslim back then. Alhamdulillah. May Allah make it easy on the new muslims. Unless “sex-slavery” truly is the most accurate way to describe it. A sex-slave is someone who is forced to perform sexual acts. Were the women forced to perform sexual acts? Did they know to perform sexual acts given that taking captives was a normal aspect of war? Is the concept of consent merely a modern idea?

But what about the claim of 'Objective Morality in Islam? The very idea that a human being can be kept as a property is abhorrent and no religion stated that this very idea is sinful in itself. Slaves were not taken in wars only but they were traded in markets also in public life. Prophet Muhammad himself had concubines which were sent to him as "Gifts' and he accepted them. The very idea that a human being can be considered as a 'Gift' is morally wrong and unjustifiable. Now you can argue about the circumstances and conditions or times of previous societies but remember in the case of Islam and Prophet you are setting an example which according to your claim is based on objective morality and for all the future generations until the end of times. i am not from the US , however i am a Western non religious person and historian . I enjoyed listening to your reply , in the 7th century at the time it makes sense to have rules on how you deal with slavery and combatants . This idea of being so sensitive to consent is something new in our modern times it was never like that. Usually when a man called his women she would accept and they would enjoy. From the Sunnah of the prophet PBUH men foreplay with their wives and sweet talk to her before asking her for intimacy. This is mentioned in the seera of the prophet PBUH. You being worried so much about rape is okay considering the increase of rape in our time, however, we don’t have accounts of any slaves that complained about her master raping her. There is a contract made between her and her master where he’s supposed to feed her from his same food, clothe her from his same fabric and take care of her. He will be asked about her on the day of judgment. She also knows that she’s required to respond to his request for intimacy as part of the contract. In Islam a slave has the right to be free if they want they just have to pay their fee. They go to court and have a contract with their master “المكاتبة" and will agree on a specific time to pay his/her price to be free. Islam also encouraged to free slaves to go to heaven. There is even a part of zakah to free slaves. The reason we’re so sensitive about this topic is because of the western/Christian brutality of slavery but this is not Islam you just have to see the bigger picture.

You should have rejected this term 'sex slavery' since it is forbidden islam to have nikkah with people other people of the book and muslims. So, even if we go to the past and there happened to be some pegan slaves, the intercourse with them is forbidden and hence this term is baseless. Also on the point of forcing them to have sex since they are slaves and have no choice, this point also was wrong. Slavery in Islam doesn't grant that you do whatever you wish to the slave since they have no choice! NO! Islam has given them human rights as in many hadeeths. It is. Because the slaves would be bought and prices set for the express purpose of their value to gratify the sexual impulses of their potential owners. If you bought a blacksmith or a carpenter, that skill set would be a large part of the price you were paying for the slave. Many of the women were taken captive specifically for sex. Hence the term sex slave and the fact that they were taken in because the men desired them. There is no need to sugar coat it for what it is.

Sex slavery does not exist. From what I have read, taking slaves in for the sake of lust is impermissible. Although coitus is allowed, it must be done with consent. There is no exploitation, abuse, and any evils involve in this system. It is only DIFFERENT to the system we are used to. People discern this wrong because it conflicts with the inferior modern system. That's the only reason why people consider it as wrong. In terms of overall harm, all are impermissible. If we agree that owning another human being is unethical and wrong, why did Mohammed not simply stop slavery if God was on his side? Stopping an evil such as slavery includes stop owning slaves yourself, stop having sex with them, and stop buying and selling them. Factors discouraging sex In the absence of any real birth control, unprotected sex historically meant increased risk of pregnancy. Pregnancy, in turn, had the following consequences: 1. If a concubine gave birth to a child (even if it results in miscarriage or still-birth), it meant that she will become free and can no longer be sold. 2. A concubine, who is the mother of the master’s child, enjoyed increased social status. She could no longer be considered a slave. And since slave is considered property, the master would lose property if she was freed. 3. Being a mother meant that the concubine would enjoy reduced work load and more rights . Factors encouraging sex Contrary to what some may think, the master himself may avoid sex with his female slave for reasons explained below. He would be discouraged from having sex with the concubine for two very real and human reasons: 1. If pregnant, the concubine would no longer be considered a property that can be sold. In other words, the pregnancy meant loss of property and hence loss of money and labor. 2. The society looked down upon masters who, instead of freeing and then marrying his concubine as recommended by the Messenger of God (ﷺ), or instead of marrying a free woman, impregnated a concubine. The child of the master would then have to put up with the social stigma of his mother being considered a concubine. In light of the above five factors, sex from the man’s side was discouraged socially and economically, while sex from the female side usually brought benefits to the concubine. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that sex probably occurred a lot less than what some would assume. However, there’s no historical evidence that conclusively proves that any sex even occurred between master and the concubine, except when they became pregnant or gave birth to their master’s children; and there’s no historical evidence of rape. Some would even argue that the word rape does not even make sense here because a master has legal right to have sex as soon as he assumes custody of the concubine. This is true for marriage as well where the contract is the consent.
So what happens if the slave girl refuses sex or is disgusted by it or physically prevents the master from it? What would be her punishment and can the master forcefully enter her and make her pregnant?

Daniel lacks nuance. There's a difference between concubinage and slavery. There isn't such a thing as sex slaves in Islam. Yes, people had concubines to increase their numbers. A concubine was a lesser wife and was and still is common in many cultures.

As you know in Aakhira Iman will be rewarded and kufr will be punished. Sometimes Allah Ta'ala gives punishment of kufr in this Dunya as well through the agency of his Khalifa(vicegerent)/khilafat(Islamic government). Now understand this, slaves become slaves only in war meaning these people were fighting and killing muslims but got captured. Now the khalifa/Ameer has a few options regarding these prisoners of war. One of the option is to enslave them. This enslavement is due to their rebellion and due to them fighting Islam and Muslims and also due to their kufr. However as you may have read from the above link Islam still gave slaves abundance of rights and the chance to gain their freedom. Also Allah gave these prisoners of war a chance to gain knowledge of Islam and integrate into society again

Why didn't Prophet Muhammad SAW free her concubine immediately? - When talking of this issue, we must first observe the social environment at that time. - As a free slave she won't have no means of survival. No work, no shelter, no food nor no land to bear. - Since Capitalism is yet to exist, work was mostly done by family members or slaves. It is considered outside the norm for any family to take in an ex-slave moreover a non member of the tribe. - If the concubine were to be freed, Prophet Muhammad could no longer keep her in his house as it would present a source of Zina and disagreement with his tribe and wives. - By taking in the concubine, the prophet could slowly build her image and later when she bore his child she hold the status 'Umm Al-Walad'(mother of the child). A status where she and her offspring becomes free and could never be sold again. The child would be considered legitimate and has full rights of name and inheritance. - Ibn ‘Abbas said: When Maria gave birth to Ibrahim the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘Her son has set her free.’ Why didn't the prophet just said to ban slavery immediately? - First of all, the prophet do not make any rulings unless it's from Allah. There is many instances that people would come to him to ask for advice of which he would answer he don't know and have not receive a revelation for it. He is given the title Al-Amin (the truthful, trustworthy) amongst the pagan worshipper for a reason. - Even matters such as interest (Usury or Riba) and idols were prohibited in stages but were not as complex as slavery. Prohibition of usury in Islam was fully implemented by Caliphate Umar when Islam has gain a stabil governance on the land. - Abolishing slavery immediately without establishing a proper governances and rights will only cause confusion among the masses where slaves used to hold no title, land, privileges or rights. So what Islam did was slowly changing the norms while trying to establish a systematic policy for the free slaves. - An example like USA, when the black community was finally given their freedom, the statistics for crimes and prostitution rises because people were unable to get decent jobs. The norms for the south didn't change because they were not as highly educated as the north, hindering their ability to socialisation. Thus, extreme racism persist throughout the time. But atleast USA was a capitalist system rather than tribal/family oriented where work was only given to blood relations. - The prophet did prohibit any additional slaves from war as revealed in Quran chapter 47 verse 4 during muslim first major battle of Badr. Captives were either to be freed or taken as ransom. And the Mukataba law was also introduce where if the slave think they are capable and willing, they could ask for manumission from their master, and it is obligatory for the master to oblige. Slavery or sex slavery.. Slavery came long before the prophet was born. Islam merely gave rights to slave which no other tribes or groups has ever given before. Just like the prohibition of intoxicants, all these matters were intended to be forbidden in multiple stages. Since Allah is the most knowing, a non drastic approach was implemented to avoid issues with the people in the most pragmatic way to deal with the deep-rooted social problems. The final blow to sex slavery came through the Verse 4:24. As the model of Islam, all of Prophet Muhammad's slaves were given to him, not bought, and later was freed by him. Hoping with his authority in Islam would influence the social norms of the community to give up slavery on their own rather than force execution. Slaves who are without a master have a very low chance on survival since they have no homes and means to feed themselves nor land to bear. Though the significance of slavery in ancient time is totally loss, it is reported that slavery was the driving force for socio economics in ancient nations. So there is a reason slavery was not immediately stop since a proper governance and rights of the people was not yet fully establish or implemented. Sex with concubine different than Open Zina? As like I mentioned before, Allah is the most wise, everything that was deep rooted around the social norms, Allah was giving prohibition in stages. To avoid open sex, the Qur'an allowed this custom by requiring that a man not have sexual relations with anyone except for this wife or concubine. Meaning, the act was constricted. Once society has adapted to the norms, prostitution of concubines was prohibited. Why is there a limit on the number of wife but not concubines? As we later see, the implementation of concubines were later abolished, thus were not given anymore significance. However, the limit set on wifes were implemented since it is still considered relevant till modern times. Allah knows best..
Additional slaves were still taken after Badr. The battle of Badr was in 624. After the battle of Badr there was the Invasion of Banu Qaynuqa, the invasion of sawiq, the invasion of Al-Kudr, the Dhu Amarr raid, invasion of buhran. All within 7 months after the Battle of Badr. Excluding the ones I had just mentioned, There were 19 MORE occasions (invasions, sieges, expeditions and battles) and that is just including those Mohammed was physically present for. During these times more and more captives were taken in. So it is dishonest to say additional slaves were banned after Badr. It’s also dishonest to say that it was not entirely banned simply for the reason that rulings need to be put in place gradually over time since the banning of slavery was not completed and surely if there was intention for it to be banned a true messenger would have completed that mission.

“It was customary among the ancients for the women, who accompanied their fathers or husbands to battle, to put on their finest dresses and ornaments previous to an engagement, in order to attract the notice of the conqueror, if taken prisoners.” (Oriental Customs Or, an Illustration of the Sacred Scripture, Williams and Smith, London, 1807 vol.2 p.79)
It was a war custom in the past to take men and women as captives and then turn them into slaves or kill them, otherwise they could reproduce and take revenge. Islam did not initiate it, rather, it was deeply rooted in society and was practiced long ago before the revelation of Islam. And when Islam tried to eradicate this practice, bit by bit. So it first restricted it to the reciprocal practice of war, in the sense that Muslims took war captives just as the enemies did with Muslims.
Islam has limited the sources of slaves which were many before the coming of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and has allowed only one source, which is enemy prisoners of war, when the disbeliever enemies are fighting the Muslims. The commander is given the choice of sharing them out, doing them a favour (by releasing them) or paying their ransom.
Ali reported that the last words of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were:

As we can clearly see, Islam says that if a slave request freedom, he/she can get it, including some money, in order for the slave to get a good jump start in life if the master can see honesty with him/her. You won't find this in any other scripture.

5. If a slave comes into a household where there is already a wife, I guarantee you that the wife will make the slave's life miserable because of jealousy. How is this to be regulated?

The term sex slave is usually used when people are taken or trafficked to be used as sex slaves. They are kept in rooms and are visited sole for sex. From what I’m hearing the Muslim took the slaves and they were kept as slaves (doing chores and work for their owner), the owners were permitted to have sex with them. So why not just call them slaves.

Harun ibn al-Asim reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, dispatched Khalid ibn al-Walid with the army. Khalid sent Dirar ibn al-Azwar along with a company of horsemen and they raided a district belonging to the tribe of Asad. They captured a woman who was a beautiful bride-to-be and she amazed Dirar. He asked his companions for her and they gave her to him, then he had intercourse with her. When he returned from the expedition, he regretted what he had done and he collapsed in dismay. It was referred to Khalid and told him what he had done. Khalid said, “Indeed, I have made her permissible and wholesome for you.” Dirar said, “No, not until you write to Umar.” Umar replied that he should be stoned to death, but he had passed away from natural causes by the time Umar’s letter arrived. Khalid said, “Allah did not want to disgrace Dirar ibn al-Azwar.”

U are always so called "unapologetic" that it is outside the islamic paradigm. For example, when you mention about wife beating being necessary, why don't u ever mention that it is the very last resort to be applied. Beating to cause physical harm is haram according to ijmaa. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never beat any of his wives.

A sex-slave is someone who is forced to perform sexual acts. Were the women forced to perform sexual acts? Did they know to perform sexual acts given that taking captives was a normal aspect of war? Is the concept of consent merely a modern idea?

But what about the claim of 'Objective Morality in Islam? The very idea that a human being can be kept as a property is abhorrent and no religion stated that this very idea is sinful in itself. Slaves were not taken in wars only but they were traded in markets also in public life. Prophet Muhammad himself had concubines which were sent to him as "Gifts' and he accepted them. The very idea that a human being can be considered as a 'Gift' is morally wrong and unjustifiable. Now you can argue about the circumstances and conditions or times of previous societies but remember in the case of Islam and Prophet you are setting an example which according to your claim is based on objective morality and for all the future generations until the end of times. This, my dear,...this is where the problem arises and the foundational claim of "Objective Morality" by any religion or specifically by Islam destructs completely. Even Prophet was the product of his own time and maybe a very kind person according to those standards but to claim that religious morality is dictated by God and is objective in nature is a very naive way to approach things. i am not from the US , however i am a Western non religious person and historian .

[ Germany , japan , Britain , Italy etc ] In stead the US would guarantee sovranty and trade between western countries . The US was the only country that could take this job on and inforce free trade . The US developed a blue water fleet to do this .
Today the US can no longer afford to spend 4% of its GDP protecting world trade and other countries sovereignty . The US is trying to hand this responsibility back to western countries with treaty agreements and alliances .

It was referred to Khalid and told him what he had done. Khalid said, "Indeed, I have made her permissible and wholesome for you." Dirar said, "No, not until you write to Umar." Umar replied that he should be stoned to death, but he had passed away from natural causes by the time Umar's letter arrived. Khalid said, "Allah did not want to disgrace Dirar ibn al-Azwar."

This idea of being so sensitive to consent is something new in our modern times it was never like that. Usually when a man called his women she would accept and they would enjoy. From the Sunnah of the prophet PBUH men foreplay with their wives and sweet talk to her before asking her for intimacy. This is mentioned in the seera of the prophet PBUH. You being worried so much about rape is okay considering the increase of rape in our time, however, we don’t have accounts of any slaves that complained about her master raping her. There is a contract made between her and her master where he’s supposed to feed her from his same food, clothe her from his same fabric and take care of her. He will be asked about her on the day of judgment. She also knows that she’s required to respond to his request for intimacy as part of the contract. In Islam a slave has the right to be free if they want they just have to pay their fee. They go to court and have a contract with their master “المكاتبة" and will agree on a specific time to pay his/her price to be free. Islam also encouraged to free slaves to go to heaven. There is even a part of zakah to free slaves. The reason we’re so sensitive about this topic is because of the western/Christian brutality of slavery but this is not Islam you just have to see the bigger picture.

You should have rejected this term 'sex slavery' since it is forbidden islam to have nikkah with people other people of the book and muslims. So, even if we go to the past and there happened to be some pegan slaves, the intercourse with them is forbidden and hence this term is baseless.

It is. Because the slaves would be bought and prices set for the express purpose of their value to gratify the sexual impulses of their potential owners. If you bought a blacksmith or a carpenter, that skill set would be a large part of the price you were paying for the slave. Sex slavery does not exist. From what I have read, taking slaves in for the sake of lust is impermissible. Although coitus is allowed, it must be done with consent. There is no exploitation, abuse, and any evils involve in this system. It is only DIFFERENT to the system we are used to. In Islam, sexual relations are legal and moral in two ways only. First one is through marriage. The second option, which is rare and is merely permissible (generally highly discouraged), is sex with a concubine. Sex with a concubine is not an absolute right. Details and restrictions are in the hundreds of hadeeth. Even so, sex with concubine is heavily restricted and regulated by a complex set of rules and guidelines that are discussed in this work. However, it’s important to high light that this option is no longer a choice since slavery has been abolished throughout the Muslim world by unanimous consensus of the Islamic scholars as well as secular legal scholars in all Muslim countries since the past 100 years or so.
Historically, an average man or woman in the Muslim world could NOT afford to buy and maintain slaves. Just like an average American cannot afford to buy and maintain a luxury house, car, or boat. A question that arises is this: Since most masters were rich, did the concubines take advantage of this and use their sexuality to their advantage? Let history be the judge.
Historically, many concubines in the Muslim world took advantage of this halal sex option to improve their economic and social status. As noted earlier, most of the Caliphs of Abbasid period were sons of concubines. This meant that some concubines were also the mothers of the most power men in the Islamic empire. Just as a woman today uses a college degree to increase her economic and social status, many concubines in the Islamic world used sex as a legal and moral option to their advantage to gain freedom, improve economic and social status. If you have no choice but to have sex with the one rich man who provides you with financial support, treats you well, feeds and clothes you, treats you like his family (as discussed above), then why wouldn’t you use it to your advantage instead of fighting it off?
Factors discouraging sex
In the absence of any real birth control, unprotected sex historically meant increased risk of pregnancy. Pregnancy, in turn, had the following consequences:
1. If a concubine gave birth to a child (even if it results in miscarriage or still-birth), it meant that she will become free and can no longer be sold.
2. A concubine, who is the mother of the master’s child, enjoyed increased social status. She could no longer be considered a slave. And since slave is considered property, the master would lose property if she was freed.
3. Being a mother meant that the concubine would enjoy reduced work load and more rights .
Factors encouraging sex
Contrary to what some may think, the master himself may avoid sex with his female slave for reasons explained below. He would be discouraged from having sex with the concubine for two very real and human reasons:
1. If pregnant, the concubine would no longer be considered a property that can be sold. In other words, the pregnancy meant loss of property and hence loss of money and labor.
2. The society looked down upon masters who, instead of freeing and then marrying his concubine as recommended by the Messenger of God (ﷺ), or instead of marrying a free woman, impregnated a concubine. The child of the master would then have to put up with the social stigma of his mother being considered a concubine.
In light of the above five factors, sex from the man’s side was discouraged socially and economically, while sex from the female side usually brought benefits to the concubine. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that sex probably occurred a lot less than what some would assume. However, there’s no historical evidence that conclusively proves that any sex even occurred between master and the concubine, except when they became pregnant or gave birth to their master’s children; and there’s no historical evidence of rape. Some would even argue that the word rape does not even make sense here because a master has legal right to have sex as soon as he assumes custody of the concubine. This is true for marriage as well where the contract is the consent.
So what happens if the slave girl refuses sex or is disgusted by it or physically prevents the master from it? What would be her punishment and can the master forcefully enter her and make her pregnant?

As you know in Aakhira Iman will be rewarded and kufr will be punished. Sometimes Allah Ta'ala gives punishment of kufr in this Dunya as well through the agency of his Khalifa(vicegerent)/khilafat(Islamic government). Now understand this, slaves become slaves only in war meaning these people were fighting and killing muslims but got captured. Now the khalifa/Ameer has a few options regarding these prisoners of war. One of the option is to enslave them. This enslavement is due to their rebellion and due to them fighting Islam and Muslims and also due to their kufr. However as you may have read from the above link Islam still gave slaves abundance of rights and the chance to gain their freedom.
Also Allah gave these prisoners of war a chance to gain knowledge of Islam and integrate into society again

Why didn't Prophet Muhammad SAW free her concubine immediately?
- When talking of this issue, we must first observe the social environment at that time.
- As a free slave she won't have no means of survival. No work, no shelter, no food nor no land to bear.
- Since Capitalism is yet to exist, work was mostly done by family members or slaves. It is considered outside the norm for any family to take in an ex-slave moreover a non member of the tribe.
- If the concubine were to be freed, Prophet Muhammad could no longer keep her in his house as it would present a source of Zina and disagreement with his tribe and wives.
- By taking in the concubine, the prophet could slowly build her image and later when she bore his child she hold the status 'Umm Al-Walad'(mother of the child). A status where she and her offspring becomes free and could never be sold again. The child would be considered legitimate and has full rights of name and inheritance.
- Ibn ‘Abbas said: When Maria gave birth to Ibrahim the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘Her son has set her free.’
Why didn't the prophet just said to ban slavery immediately?
- First of all, the prophet do not make any rulings unless it's from Allah. There is many instances that people would come to him to ask for advice of which he would answer he don't know and have not receive a revelation for it. He is given the title Al-Amin (the truthful, trustworthy) amongst the pagan worshipper for a reason.
- Even matters such as interest (Usury or Riba) and idols were prohibited in stages but were not as complex as slavery. Prohibition of usury in Islam was fully implemented by Caliphate Umar when Islam has gain a stabil governance on the land.
- Abolishing slavery immediately without establishing a proper governances and rights will only cause confusion among the masses where slaves used to hold no title, land, privileges or rights. So what Islam did was slowly changing the norms while trying to establish a systematic policy for the free slaves.
- An example like USA, when the black community was finally given their freedom, the statistics for crimes and prostitution rises because people were unable to get decent jobs. The norms for the south didn't change because they were not as highly educated as the north, hindering their ability to socialisation. Thus, extreme racism persist throughout the time. But atleast USA was a capitalist system rather than tribal/family oriented where work was only given to blood relations.
- The prophet did prohibit any additional slaves from war as revealed in Quran chapter 47 verse 4 during muslim first major battle of Badr. Captives were either to be freed or taken as ransom. And the Mukataba law was also introduce where if the slave think they are capable and willing, they could ask for manumission from their master, and it is obligatory for the master to oblige.
Slavery or sex slavery..
Slavery came long before the prophet was born. Islam merely gave rights to slave which no other tribes or groups has ever given before. Just like the prohibition of intoxicants, all these matters were intended to be forbidden in multiple stages. Since Allah is the most knowing, a non drastic approach was implemented to avoid issues with the people in the most pragmatic way to deal with the deep-rooted social problems. The final blow to sex slavery came through the Verse 4:24. As the model of Islam, all of Prophet Muhammad's slaves were given to him, not bought, and later was freed by him. Hoping with his authority in Islam would influence the social norms of the community to give up slavery on their own rather than force execution.
Slaves who are without a master have a very low chance on survival since they have no homes and means to feed themselves nor land to bear. Though the significance of slavery in ancient time is totally loss, it is reported that slavery was the driving force for socio economics in ancient nations. So there is a reason slavery was not immediately stop since a proper governance and rights of the people was not yet fully establish or implemented.
Sex with concubine different than Open Zina?
As like I mentioned before, Allah is the most wise, everything that was deep rooted around the social norms, Allah was giving prohibition in stages. To avoid open sex, the Qur'an allowed this custom by requiring that a man not have sexual relations with anyone except for this wife or concubine. Meaning, the act was constricted. Once society has adapted to the norms, prostitution of concubines was prohibited.
Why is there a limit on the number of wife but not concubines?
As we later see, the implementation of concubines were later abolished, thus were not given anymore significance. However, the limit set on wifes were implemented since it is still considered relevant till modern times. Allah knows best..

Additional slaves were still taken after Badr. The battle of Badr was in 624. After the battle of Badr there was the Invasion of Banu Qaynuqa, the invasion of sawiq, the invasion of Al-Kudr, the Dhu Amarr raid, invasion of buhran. All within 7 months after the Battle of Badr.
Excluding the ones I had just mentioned, There were 19 MORE occasions (invasions, sieges, expeditions and battles) and that is just including those Mohammed was physically present for. During these times more and more captives were taken in. So it is dishonest to say additional slaves were banned after Badr.
It’s also dishonest to say that it was not entirely banned simply for the reason that rulings need to be put in place gradually over time since the banning of slavery was not completed and surely if there was intention for it to be banned a true messenger would have completed that mission.
