Muddy Waters used to refer o Johnny as "my son". Johnny helped revive Muddy's career in the late 70s and early 80s. They even won a Grammy together. Blues legend
Yes, they're legendary! Johnny (on guitar in this) was the famous blues man ( he passed about 7 years ago) and Edgar had the Edgar Winter group in the seventies and can play any instrument, they are brothers from Texas and yeah, they were albinos.
@@eviekelpie1 Yep - because they were albino and super sensitive to sunlight, they spent a lot of their childhood indoors, teaching themselves to pay music and writing songs. Incredible talent, both of them.
@@dbradx It is worse than that, Johnny was blind from the stage lights, that is why his eyes are closed throughout the video. R.I.P. Johnny Winter, one of the greats of all time. I got to see him in concert in a collab tour with Leon Russell. A great concert.
Edgar was the first to strap a synthesizer to himself. Need to watch Frankenstein Live he plays 3 instruments. He is playing guitar for his brother. He had no special keys on synthesizer. He olayed sax on Simply the best Tina Turner
Thank you for reacting to this. I’ve heard it a hundred times & it always blows me away. These brothers started playing ukeleles & singing together as little children. Johnny made it big & brought Edgar to introduce him to the big audiences. Johnny played with BBKing at the age of 17. He produced 3 Grammy winning albums for Muddy Waters & finally won his own posthumously. React to “Be Careful With a Fool” by Johnny & “Frankenstein “ by Edgar. These two little albino boys, both born legally blind, are awesome, brilliant talents. People say, RIP, Johnny. I prefer to think of him rocking that guitar in a more deserving place, where some yahoo from Rolling Stone magazine can’t place him #63 in a bogus list of the 100 best guitarists of all time. He deserves better.
Love the Winter brothers, and Texas blues in general. An interesting piece of information: the bassist here is Tommy Shannon, who later joined up with Stevie Ray Vaughan as his bassist with Double Trouble.
It’s more of a geographical type of music, not an ethnic type. In the 70’s there wasn’t a racial component in music that I recall, but a diversity of localities bringing their type of music together and blending it with another’s local taste. Just my thought.
I love that Edgar Winter kills it on the keys..... then he starts singing, and blows you away...... and then he breaks out the sax and just melts your head. Daaaaaaamn!!!!!
Didn't they just tear it up? I absolutely love this song. I saw Johnny and Edgar years ago, right after Edgar put out Frankenstein. I was told that back when they made this video, that Johnny had brought Edgar into the band to showcase his talents, help him to get a contract. This video reminds me of going out and hearing awesome artists. I miss those days.
Johnny on guitar, Edgar on keyboards and vocals, the legendary Winter Brothers. Johnny passed a few years ago. Edgar still going strong. I'm a big Edgar fan, saw him in concert 3 times. I subscribed immediately. Awesome performance.
The kind of music that you REALLY start to appreciate on about the fifth listen. There is so much there, it takes the brain that long to process what you're hearing.
Your smile and taste in music are infectious! There’s incredible video of Johnny and his group playing in Denmark and absolutely stunning the unsuspecting audience. He was the other greatest blues guitarist from the 60’s. Edgar really caught the Holy Ghost here.
They are as legendary as it gets… Times of incredible stories about them. Beginning from the east plains of Texas to the entire world, they are absolutely legendary. The original issue of guitar magazine had Johnny Winter on the cover.
Johnny & Edgar Winter are perfect to listen to when you want to feel humble about the amount of work you've put into the talent we're born with. They used to practice hours and hours inside a house in Houston. 10,000 hours rule by the time they were 16!
The bass player, tommy Shannon, went on to play with Stevie Ray Vaughn about 10 years later. Johnny was the first non-African American inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. The song was originally recorded by a band called The Nashville Teens in 1964.
TUPAC sampled Edgar Winter song DYING TO LIVE and I will recommend both songs ..... I would recommend Edgar Winter Group '' FRANKENSTEIN' on Old Grey Whistle Test 1973......They both are REAL ALBINOS and had certain physical troubles during their lives because of Albinism .. They were born and raised in Beaumont ,Texas and they grew up on that music early in life ...Johnny was playing with big Delta Blues Greats like Muddy Waters early in his career .
Remember this is back in 1971! I am sure this was even more surprising maybe even unacceptable in some places back then. Talent knows no color, thank God!
Johnny Winter is a legendary guitarist, especially as a rock/blues player. He played with and produced Muddy Waters, I think after Luther Guitar Jr Johnson focused on his solo stuff-- but I could be way wrong about the "when" of that. Johnny apparently wanted to just play blues but his label pushed him a rock direction. Edgar is a multi-instrumentalist and a great producer. There is a video of him playing his tune Frankenstein, I think Rick Derringer is the guitarist in that video, and Edgar plays keys and then takes a solo on the timbales at the end. Two great tune to check out by Edgar are Free Ride and Frankenstein. I can't even list all the great tunes by Johnny as I'm very partial to him. Still Alive and Well, Stranger, Lay Down your Sorrows, Mind Over Matter, Cheap Tequila, All Tore Down.
Edgar also had the late great Ronnie Montrose as his guitarest for a while before he left to form the group Montrose. That group launched the career of Sammy Hagar.
Johnny was one of the best blues rock guitar players in the world. Edgar just released a terrific new album where he pays tribute tohis late brother. They were and are supurb musicians. Thank you geaturing these. ☮️💟
These Brothers from Texas have been rocking and playing the Blues for 50 yrs plus. Both are gone now. So much talent between them. Both are Albinos. They have to steer clear of the sun for the most part. Damn they were good.
Edgar is a multi instrumentalist and on the jazzier side. His big hits were Frankenstein and Free Ride but he had several really good albums. Johnny is a great blues guitarists and while he may not have had a real commercial hit he has several classic albums and songs. Some of his great work were with Rick Derringer in their band Johnny Winter And. Rick also played with Edgar and wrote songs for both brothers. From Johnny, I'd recommend the live version of Mean Town Bllues where he jams with Rick Derringer. Also, Still Alive and Well, The Rock and Roll Medley from Johnny Winter And Live, Prodigal Son and cover of the Rolling Stones Jumping Jack Flash and Let it Bleed.
Johnny Winter 'Still Alive and Well' is a good tune off an album of the same name .'Ain't Nothing to Me' is my personal favorite off the album, it has more of a country blues flavor. Edgar Winter was more of a commercial success than Johnny but I liked both.
that album is kick ass and i love every thing on it, still listen to it at least once a month after seeing his comeback tour to promote it. Frustrates the fuck out of me how most of these reactors don't delve into him deeper but I guess they just go for the videos like all the others have done. They should react to just the audio for a lot of stuff then they would get a better idea of who they are instead of cherry picking some of their better known stuff...Just saying....lol

BizMatik! I'm just blown away that you got around to the TEXAS BLUES of the Winter brothers! Their father was a pastor & Edgar & Johnny grew up in his church. They LOVED/PREFERRED the blues; but, with all that talent, could perform anything! I saw The Edgar Winter Group, the Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs, Bobby Blue Bland & Dr. John at the (Richmond, VA) Cherry Blossom Music Festival (which climaxed into a riot!) on April 27, 1974! Killer performances! April 28th was supposed to feature: Mandrill, Kool & The Gang and George Clinton with the Funkadelic; but, day 2 was cancelled! Those were some REALLY wild times! I've loved the Winter bros since the first time I heard them & that's been a VERY long time! You NEED to check out/react to both "Frankenstein" and "FREE RIDE"! Johnny Winter And is the name of a volcano hot live album that ranks up there with the best live rock records around.
