At first I was tempted to ask you to explain your remark, but then I realized that you're one of the thousands of trolls that have now infested youtube.
I've been a lifelong democrat, but I'd vote for this man for president in a heartbeat... dear god, imagine a president with a beautiful ethical, intelligent mind driving his vision like this man. Listening to him articulate his thinking is a profound, delightful intellectual adventure!
I'm a liberal and David I believe calls himself a conservative. David is my favorite political pundit and just a great all around thinker. David Brooks and Charlie Rose it doesn't get better than that.
I don't think that's a thing. I think he considers himself a conservative but is open minded to some liberal ideas. I consider myself a liberal but I'm open minded to some of the conservative points. What I really like about David is he logical and well informed. He's open to reason and doesn't have an agenda. But I see your point Sylis Crow that doesn't fit the stereotype of a conservative. Sylis Crow what do you consider yourself? Liberal or conservative?
I'm with you Mr. Rizzo. I'm a big fan of H. Bush. Voted for him both times. But then there's W, Palin and Trump what a clown car of candidates. McCain and Romney were reasonable choices. If Romney would have got a elected and did a good job I would have voted for him for a second term. I could never vote for McCain as long as Palin was his V.P. I admire the Bushes for not voting for Trump. I like Jeb.
I believe that David believes he's more conservative than liberal. A lot of far right people think if you don't agree with everything I think then your not a real conservative. Heaven forbid some thoughtful, educated, practical, honest, good moderate should call himself a conservative. I think the extreme right modo is( we don't like his kind). That's why the right likes Trump.
He is really a wonderful journalist, author and columnist for the NY times. I wish I had a chance to work for him so that I could articulate myself better in life. An intelligent American conservative.
David Brooks is one of the few Conservatives that has ethics and morals consistently over many years. I disagree but approve of his type of character. Best of luck to his future success...
Congratulations for even knowing about Proust. I've read it -- its super long but very interesting because he writes down everything that he remembers, feels/ felt, and think/thought in his very limited life..
Just about everything Brooks said is so far from reality of the lives of ordinary people that is no wonder he didn't see Trump coming. And Cameron recomending his book to his cabinet who then didn't see Brexit coming either confirms the validity of my point.
Yes, he speaks from the point of view of highly intelligent educated people, who come from that kind of family. And those kinds of people have always made up a small minority of the population. The ideas he expresses are of course going to come across as foreign to working-class shlubs. But he is as down-to-earth as any public intellectual is going to be. And what you are supposed to do is appreciate his grasp of the world and life, and learn to be a better person.
I like most of what David says on Shields and Brooks. However he seems to spend more time doing research on some topics than others. The Republican trickle down theory is not supported by a vast number of academic economists. Common sense tells me that corporations are not going to invest their tax cut bounty. Most already have hoards of cash that they are paying to shareholders in dividends. We are at a historic low unemployment rate, so how can they hire more, esp when they don't want immigrants (they say)? If you think think that they will generously give employees a wage increase then maybe you have not worked for one of them.
David would make a great atheist. Poor bugger sounds like he might die with faith ..and therefore never actually know. (that's just so sad ..such diligence and potential) [edit] ...how the heck does faith exist in that mind? ...crossed wires? or determined (very localised) obfuscation of rationality ..I've no idea.
Two of my favorite people: both wonderful and insightful journalists--newspaper and TV.
thank you for posting....I like David more every year...
me too
Brooks speaks with such calm and consideration... this is the type of informed voice we always need to hear when discussing big issues.
No, he is nothing but racist and divisive himself.

When I listen to David I feel this profound sense of sadness that I have not been living my life correctly.
Wow, I am in awe of the intellect of David Brooks
I'm a liberal and David I believe calls himself a conservative. David is my favorite political pundit and just a great all around thinker. David Brooks and Charlie Rose it doesn't get better than that.
JDeadmoneyC That's because David Brooks is a fake conservative

Hardly. He's an old-line Republican meaning George H.W. Bush and before, when the Republican Party actually had a decent ideology.

You have given an enormous gift of self awareness, challenging ourselves. You help us slow our minds

Also, these two people, Charlie Rose and David Brooks -- you can't get any better than that!
I just heard his interview with Oprah on SSS. I found him to be very insightful. I want to read his books and have my sons read his books as well.
this should have a billion views.

I need someone like David in my life to mentor me..........i really wish I had that.
This interview is fascinating !!!
I'd only ever heard him on NPR and always though he sounds like James Woods, voice wise.
Brooks view is essentially Humans are made to love
David Brooks is a hippie! That's fascinating!
what's the song at the beginning?
"politics is noble because it makes you notice the other people in the room"
Charlie Rose should have added in his prologue
: 'and a consistent 'W' supporter and defender....'
Behind all of his erudition, I see a man who has yet to fully accept the truth that his heart tells him is true: Jesus is Lord!
Just about everything Brooks said is so far from reality of the lives of ordinary people that is no wonder he didn't see Trump coming. And Cameron recomending his book to his cabinet who then didn't see Brexit coming either confirms the validity of my point.
