It's because that's how they behaved in SMB3, iirc. I wonder why they jump in SMW style too, though, since that style is pretty similar to the NSMB style and Ludwig spun in his shell un a similar manner to the NSMB Koopalings in the original SMW.
I feel like for every world they should add a toggle “keep power ups” that lets you bring power ups from the last level for traditional worlds Edit: Okay, I thought this would be obvious but looking back I should've specified that yes, only mushrooms and fire flowers would work unless the next level is the same theme as the last one. For example, if you had a propeller suit in a NSMBU level then go into a SMB3 level, you'd only keep the mushroom, but if you go from NSMBU with a propeller suit to another NSMBU level with the keep powerups turned on, you'd keep the propeller suit.

fun fact: smb2 mario can only pick up enemies that normal mario can jump on EDIT: smb2 mario can only pick up enemies that can be knocked/killed with a stomp (bouncy enemies don't count) and items like POWs or sideways springs (no p-switch), bosses/mini bosses CANNOT be picked up
Normal Mario can bounce on a spiny if it's upside down. Also busted, Mario can bounce on semi bosses (boom boom, Jr, Koopalings) but can't pick them up. He can pick up the chain chomp's log, but it doesn't bounce. He can't pick up munchers, on which he CAN stand when under the effect of the super star. He can pick up pows, and sideways springs (this is the only way to carry a sideways spring by the way).

The Pink Coin which is seen on-screen does not count toward the 99 entities under most circumstances. For some reason, during the 34 frame animation which tells the player "You collected a Pink Coin" and only during those 34 frames, does it count toward the 99 entities, bringing the total entities loaded to 100. When there are 100 entities loaded, nothing can spawn from Pipes, Bullet Blasters, etc... And Note Blocks. The way Ceave sets it up, the Muncher hits the Note Block before you get the Pink Coin, meaning it can release the Note Block's contents (and cause a chain reaction which changes the state of an On/Off Block) before the 34 frame animation occurs. After that, you get the Checkpoint, which saves the fact that you have one Pink Coin to the game's memory. If you die at this point, there will be no Pink Coin to grab to offset the entity limit, meaning the same Muncher-Note Block reaction occurs as before. As the level progresses, you get the other Pink Coin. This gives you the Key, and resets the game's memory regarding the Pink Coins you have collected, meaning they will all respawn after the next death. Anyway, after you die, you respawn at the Checkpoint and are greeted by the first Pink Coin again. This fills the limit to 100 for the 34 frames. During this time, the Muncher bounces off the Note Block, unable to spawn its contents. This means the On/Off Block can't change. In other words, we have successfully transferred one piece of information past the death barrier. The bit of information may be multiplied into an On/Off Block change, or a P-Switch being activated, or whatever you would like.

Fun Fact, the SMB2 mushroom doesn't only effect the level's music, but other stuff too! @@AlexTheDoggoMaster Basically, in the setup, 99 entities are loaded (most of which being One-Way Gates, because they are always loaded in their respective Subarea). The Pink Coin which is seen on-screen does not count toward the 99 entities under most circumstances. For some reason, during the 34 frame animation which tells the player "You collected a Pink Coin" and only during those 34 frames, does it count toward the 99 entities, bringing the total entities loaded to 100.
When there are 100 entities loaded, nothing can spawn from Pipes, Bullet Blasters, etc... And Note Blocks.
The way Ceave sets it up, the Muncher hits the Note Block before you get the Pink Coin, meaning it can release the Note Block's contents (and cause a chain reaction which changes the state of an On/Off Block) before the 34 frame animation occurs. After that, you get the Checkpoint, which saves the fact that you have one Pink Coin to the game's memory.
If you die at this point, there will be no Pink Coin to grab to offset the entity limit, meaning the same Muncher-Note Block reaction occurs as before.
As the level progresses, you get the other Pink Coin. This gives you the Key, and resets the game's memory regarding the Pink Coins you have collected, meaning they will all respawn after the next death.
Anyway, after you die, you respawn at the Checkpoint and are greeted by the first Pink Coin again. This fills the limit to 100 for the 34 frames. During this time, the Muncher bounces off the Note Block, unable to spawn its contents. This means the On/Off Block can't change.
In other words, we have successfully transferred one piece of information past the death barrier. The bit of information may be multiplied into an On/Off Block change, or a P-Switch being activated, or whatever you would like.
I knew this was coming out today!
I just can't wait to see the amazing levels people are going to be making using these mechanics.
This myth busting is very useful for finding new things you can do and busting old theories.

I was disappointed by it too but if you think about it they do it because of how each level can be in a different style so certain power ups may not exist for the next level.

It prevents cheese, plus you have to remember, each theme has exclusive powerups that wouldn't carry over.
If power-ups were transferred, *tons* of levels would break. Lots of things are designed for small mario and wouldn't work if they were big mario. Also, this is the dumbest comment I've seen in a long while. Just think about it before you comment next time.
Edit: Also, some levels would be impossible or way harder.

In my opinion it really sucks that powerups don’t carry over in different courses, they should add an option in the world editor to enable that!
