Was Shadow Weaver sincere with the whole "we're not so different, you and I" schtick? I mean judging by the episode it's true, but did SW actually felt this way or was that just part of her manipulation?

    • @Marta-uv4id
      @Marta-uv4id 3 роки тому +33

@@somestuff7876 I'd say it was a manipulation tactic. Shadow Weaver never showed Catra the same "love" (I'm putting quotations because what Shadow Weaver shows Adora is *not* love) as Adora because she saw no power to use. The only reason she noticed Adora as a baby and continued to take special care of her is because she sensed her power, while Catra had aboslutely none and was also able to make Adora do things as her friend that Shadow Weaver herself was never able to. It's the same reason she took a liking to Micah. She always seeks to get power in any way she can by using other people that have the power she wants, while she finds the people without access to power useless.

@@Marta-uv4id I see. I was leaning towards this read the first time around, too. It's just that when she requested that badge and used along the lines word "powerless" describing herself alarm bells rang in my head. But by the time SW was talking about them being similar - we were shown, like word for word, similar raging reactions from SW and Catra to being seen as untrustworthy. Which made me think for a second that maybe SW at least being honest about her reasons. Than expected betrayal happened and that sealed the deal on it being pure manipulation for me.
      Until...
      *spoilers, guys be careful*
...season 5 with "being proud" thing which is out of all her speech, in that moment, felt least bit needed in order to put Catra into motion. The rest could be read as "focus Catra and do a thing". I'm not even touching on the sacrifice itself which I read as final manipulation into being remembered more fondly at least as well as actually doing the right thing this time.
"Being proud" part just drives me nuts. And makes me question season 2 episode 6 in particularly. Of course not the character itself, the writers and their intentions.

I like her because while she has done a lot of bad things. She didn't want to be a bad person.
The reason she wanted to do the Ritual Of Obtainment isn't because she wanted to become an all powerful ruler. She saw the writing on the wall. The horde was a threat and would be a threat to the art of magic she loved. But the old people in charge refused to acknowledge the threat (not that we'd know what that can be like)
She wanted to use the ritual to give them the power to fight and defeat Hordak. The reason it didn't was because Micah bailed on her and ruined the spell leaving her damaged and disformed.
When she failed she became a threat to the sorcerer's guild. They wouldn't have let her back in as shown by them going straight for the kill. She was more or less just defending herself. So because the Sorcerer's Guild and by extension the good guys wouldn't let her join them, she joined the Horde rather than be a side character.
As we see in later episodes when there's a threat she joins to fight against it. She's on the side on whoever lets her research magic. It's her one true pride and something she wants to be acknowledged for.
If Hordak hadn't started an invasion or the old men saw the threat for what it was, by now in the canon we would most likely see a less disfigured Shadoweaver teaching a young Glimmer the basics of magic.

    • @samrevlej9331
      @samrevlej9331 Рік тому +6

@@GamerGrovyle Eh. I mean you could clearly see the signs of her thirst for power and her penchant for manipulation in her relationship with Micah. Also she used his devotion to her to make him help her with this spell she knew was dangerous, knowingly endangering him.
I mean, Norwyn and the Sorcerers' Guild were clearly very passive and burying their heads in the sand, and then tried to kill her, but that doesn't justify her turning to the Horde, which is the opposite of her stated purpose with the Spell of Obtainment. Not to mention her abuse of Adora and Catra.
I like Shadow Weaver's character but there's no redeeming her. Her backstory explains some things but doesn't justify her awful personality, which is a relief. Sometimes even a complex villain with a backstory can just be evil. There's no need to redeem everyone you give a bit of explanation for.

Man, when you realize that Shadow Weavers kindness towards Catra was just an act so she could escape, that is probably the coldest moment in the entire show. It's also painful to see that Catra actually wants to keep her around no matter how abusive she was towards her. As much as they may hate them, some abused children still hang on to their parents/parent-figures. It's sickening and twisted, but very real. Kudos for adding those complex themes in what just seems to be a fun fantasy series to some people.

I think Shadow Weaver was actually being genuine when she told Catra why she was so cruel to her. Shadow Weaver's smart enough to know that it's far more efficient to manipulate people with the truth than with a lie. If you think about it, I don't think she told a single lie in this entire episode. She simply didn't reveal the whole truth because she's better at planning ahead than Catra.

"I was a child when you took me in. What could I have possibly done to deserve the way you treated me?!" That line stings so much. So many action oriented kids shows show child characters having to spend their childhood fighting for their life, constantly in life or death situations. And to the audience it's a fun, comedic, whimsical adventure. But from the characters perspective, they're seriously going through a ton of trauma that has lasting effects on their mental states. Avatar and Steven Universe also spotlighted these lasting effects very well.

Speaking as a therapist and as an abuse survivor, I completely understand Catra wanting to keep Shadow Weaver around. Children grow up very aware (subconsciously, anyway) that they depend on their caretakers for survival. Even for an abused child, the prospect of being completely abandoned is terrifying, an existential threat, and that fear doesn't go away just because Catra was abused. Quite the opposite: the abuse has led Catra to develop an avoidant attachment style, so she really doesn't have any of the social support network we need to live as adults, making the loss of her parent even more frightening.
Keeping control of SW is also important to Catra, because as Montana has pointed out before, Catra's conception of love is deeply entangled with the idea of control.
Finally, Catra still desperately wants SW's approval and love. Losing Shadow Weaver means she will never get it. I've had clients who found themselves grieving the death of their abuser for similar reasons.

Being told by your abuser that you're "just like them" is the worst experience, and just another form abuse can take. It really messes with your head-- makes you think you are bad by nature, inevitably. I feel like there are two ways to respond to this, as the abused child-- overthink every action because you think there is something wrong with you and you need to counteract it; or resign yourself to your fate as an asshole and tell yourself "I can't help doing what I do, I am not in control." It is clear to me which "path" Catra is taking, without the ability to really process what she is doing or what she has internalized because she is under constant threat, physically and mentally.

SW sees what she hates abt herself (not magically powerful) in Catra and what she wishes she was (powerful) in Adora. But by projecting her self-hatred onto one child and her pure ambition into the other, she creates the exact qualities she sees in the children. Catra only feels like she matters when she’s powerful, and Adora only feels like she matters when she’s neglecting herself to work. Those qualities wouldn’t be there without SW though. She can say she saw them in the children but the truth is she created them.

The thing about Light Spinner/Shadow Weaver is that her methods never really changed, just her environment. What she could get away with, what could be seen as normal, where she was in her life, and how much power she had all changed, but not her methods. She praised Micah and put down Castaspella to influence them both towards her own goals. If anything, I find it interesting that her methods got more extreme when she lost her standing in Mystacor since oftentimes, abusers abuse others out of fear of their own perceived weaknesses or lack of power. Technically speaking, Shadow Weaver got more power once she finished the ritual, but she never really saw it as a gain and more of a loss, which made her more desperate to regain power and influence again, causing her tactics to get more violent and toxic and pointed. She was always capable of it, but she never needed to utilize them because she had the power in Mystacor to not really have to use them.

i love this episode because it sets a complicated character for shadow weaver. she's not exactly a pure evil being who has never had a heart, but her particular brand of power hungry malice is just so.... human. she is cruel in extremely human ways, taking advantage of the children around her while also in some incredibly fucked up way caring about them.
her relationship to micah and adora, versus how she sees catra, well, she groomed all of them but in such different ways.
it's so sad seeing catra get desperate to keep shadow weaver around. and SW realises she has her around her little finger, manipulating her into getting the magic.
but that doesn't mean that what she told her was a lie. i truly believe shadow weaver was being honest when she told catra she reminded her of herself, and that's why she was so hard on her.
Scorpia watching Catra tear herself apart, unable to understand her attachment, and then Catra's despair... it's so sad.

I wonder if the transformation actually altered Shadow Weaver at all other than physically. Every behavior that makes Shadow weaver a terrible person was present when she was Lightspinner, so did the transformation alter her to bring those traits more to the surface or did she just stop holding back and being with the Horde gave her the chance to really let loose her cruelty and selfishness?
And we see here that scorpia was fed Horde propaganda regarding her family's history with the Horde. They weren't friendly. they were conquered. Which likely also means the story about the other princesses rejecting them was also lies to keep her loyal to the Horde.

18:50 It's worth noting that while Catra isn't exactly getting the fairest deal it's far from "she's got nothing". She's actually making the same mistake Shadoweaver did, not being satisfied and working with what she has and pursuing the next level to the exclusion of all else. She's still a top ranking force captain and has Scorpia on her side, not to mention a fair amount of influence over Entrapta. There would be a LOT she could do with that and we all know Catra's manipulative and clever enough to do it. There are plenty of reasonable reasons why she doesn't, but she still has plenty of power and plenty of actually sensible ways to gain more power.

That's not what he meant. Catra has power at this point in the story, sure, but she has no one in an emotional sense - as in, there's no one emotionally close to her, platonically or otherwise. There's Scorpia, sure, but even her kindness doesn't change the fact that her relationship with Catra is exceptionally self-serving, and she regularly ignores Catra's needs for emotional space and her boundaries, and projects a level of emotional connection that takes years to form. It's not an unsalvageable friendship, but neither of its participants are healthy about it.
      Catra, emotionally, has got nothing.

Shadoweaver is her mother figure. Despite the abuse she’s put her through, Catra does have an attachment to her. Loving your abuser isn’t really unusual. It’s quite common, actually, and why they have so much control over their victims. Catra is against sending her to beast island because she doesn’t want her dead. She wants her to recognize her as not worthless, as something, not nothing. And she wants that so desperately that Shadoweaver becomes her new lifeline, which gets severed when she manipulates Catra to escape.

Shadow Weaver, like Catra is the product of someone who had to fight for what they had and no one even acknowledged it, she was right that the Grandmaster was a fool wanting to just stand back and let the Horde trample Etheria, Light Spinner wasn't completely right but she wasn't wrong either, the spell only magnified the darkness already lurking inside her that everyone has, she may have been a little power hungry but the spell only made that a prominent feature of her personality drowning out all bits of light in her soul and leaving and only a Weaver of the Shadow of her former self, but despite all that parts of her still remained, her sparing Micah was one, and though her interest in Adora started from her power, I believe she genuinely cared for her but the darkness that engulfs her being makes it a sick and twisted love just as her treatment of Catra was just her trying to prepare her for the world but her corrupted heart couldn't produce any of the affection that Catra needed, I'm not defending Shadow Weaver, I'm just saying what I think, she is a terrible person but she wasn't always and isn't completely rotten, she still has a small spark that we've all seen...
Future hints to those who know what I'm talking about

Shadow Weaver is such a well written character and such a good villain. She's evil and manipulative and practically the whole fandom hates her because of who she is. Which is exactly how a true villain should be written. I hate Shadow Weaver but I do love her character as it's written. They left no room for pity when it came to her.
Also i should mention, Entrapta is in her mid 30's! She's the oldest Princess. That's why people ship her with Hordak, they are both adults.

also entraptas not in her mid 30s. shes in her mid 20s. maybe late 20s by season 5. doesnt matter but i hate when people are inaccurate

@@tipsy634 I see your point of view, and i can understand it. I always perceived that Shadow Weaver never thought she was doing good for others but for herself, which is why she was so easily able to flip sides because in her mind it doesn't matter what side she's on as long as she has some sort of control. (Not saying I'm right by any means, just sharing how I thought of it! I love your interpretation of her!)
Regardless her writing was amazingly done and it serves it's purpose in the show and makes her a memorable character regardless of if someone hates her or loves her. It's brilliant really.

but catra and shadow weaver do have parallels. theyre not saying she should get punished the same way or was as bad, but the characters do have parallels! and shadow weaver has basically been forging catra into someone like herself, so of course they do.
look at how catra manipulates people at key points in the show. scorpia and entrapta in season 1, when she (not THAT insidiously) plays on their insecurities to make them cooperate with her. it's comical watching catra try to be like shadow weaver before she's good at it. but then how she gets more controlling later, and how in season 3 and 4 shes truly acting like hot garbage, bullying or manipulating everyone she comes across to fill some void, just like Shadow Weaver. even her positive interactions with Scorpia in the Waste have some degree of power tripping rather than true equality, though by the end of the mission Scorpia came very close to making her change her mind. but the shadow weaver baggage ran too deep.
catra's still very young, and has a good heart, unlike shadow weaver, but the parallels are there and very deliberate.

For the smart person she was, she didn't take into account the risks, if can't control the power ( because it is evil and you don't have the power to clean it or it is too much) it controls you , everybody know that! And still I felt bad because she had good intentions, the saddest part is when bad things happen no matter the person's good intentions, because of their mistakes!

This early into the game I totally get not being a fan of them. It will be interesting to see how they'll react after Season 3 Episode 2 ^^

This is where I fell deeper in love with carts and absolutely wanted to kill shadow weaver for playing with her emotions. She thought she was finally getting approval from one of the people who she was seeking for it from. Honestly one of the most important parent figure in her life

And the fact that if Shadow Weaver gently manipulating Catra did not end in her leaving, Catra may have developed some sense of closure over the way she was treated which could have led to a slightly better outcome, even Shadoe Weaver wasn’t genuine.

You are wrong. Entrapta and Hordak are the best pair. They’re perfect and have my whole heart.

Let them figure out for themselves. I bet no one liked them together before Season 3. So please, delete this comment. It'd be sad if we ruined the surprise. :/
