Just like with dogs, different breeds of horses were once created for specific purposes. For a draft horse you want a strong ass horse with a gentle temper, but you also, crucially, want a healthy horse wich can work hard every day for many years without setting sick or injured. A work horse is a great investment in the food it eats and in the stable space it needs. People invested in these giant horses because they expected them to pay off in the long run. But just like with dogs, people have begun breeding extreme traits into already extreme breeds. This is why these horses look like bodybuilders. They do not look healthy. Competitive strong-men puts lots of their training into building specific muscularure to protect their spine and joints from their own massive strength. I'll bet that if you look up what a Belgian draft horse looked like in the mid 1800's, they were still huge horses but nowhere near as extreme as these.

Big horses are like Giant breed dogs. Aggression has been selected out at the genetic level because of how dangerous it would be to own one that was naturally aggressive. @@Roses6858 I think they were trying to say they are happiest when kept active, similar to hunting dogs, rather than than just hanging out all the time and not really doing anything. @@moragmacgregor6792 It depends a bit in how chunky they are (body shape including muscle not just weight/fat). We had a shire that was 1,98m tall right before the start of the neck (Don't know the english term for that bodypart). But we had to feed him like crazy to stop him from becoming too thin, so he felt just slightly wider than a regular horse between the legs, but the movements were huge. Generally yes, my uncle has owned draft horses for a while now and the ones he currently owns are definitely not what you'd call gentle. The younger one has had some adventures in her life and is very unrideable and has a wild nature and the older one is very skittish and pretty much hates everyone but my uncle.
@@ntl9974You do realize that domesticated animals rely on humans for survival and that; unlike their wild cousins, have the luxury of not being eaten alive by predators, veterinary care, being protected by the elements and fed at the right time? Which is the case with most domesticated animals of a large size. They’re sweet and intelligent, just seeing them walk by makes my heart skip a beat.💜
I've grown up riding clydesdale crosses, and percheron crosses. Because they are so large, all of their movements are slow, compared to a thoroughbred, or other breeds. Even when they shy or startle, it feels like it happens in slow motion, like you're in the matrix.
My grandma had a draft horse. He was pretty small for a draft, yet still the largest in my county. He was without a doubt the most magnificient thing you could set your eyes on as a 7 year old boy. A creature as big as a building, and as fast as a car. I do miss Jack.
i swear to god.. they do not look real. They look so god damn magical dude. They literally look like they were pulled from some sci-fi movie. So beautiful
I used to take care of these magnificent beasts at the Farm Park in Ohio. Norfolk, Suffolk, Belgians, Clydesdales, and the biggest of all, Percherons. Massive and so muscular. They never got out of control. Very gentle giants. One loved to be naughty and step on my feet when they wanted food or when I cleaned their stall. Thick toed boots helped.

@@Snow_Dragon_222 just to add, Belgian drafthorses are one of the largest breeds by far along with the Clydesdales and shire horses. These are usually 18 hands and over. I’ve seen a Belgian draft at a show, a set of four. The front 2 were 20 and 21 hands, the back 2 19 hands, they’re huge. I rode a Clydesdale, he was 19’2 at 4 years old. It’s uncommon to get a Percheron over 17 hands. However, they’re very stocky. There isn’t a Norfolk breed, there is a Suffolk punch, they’re making a comeback. There is a revival of the breed, I saw them at a show in Yorkshire, a beautiful 4. A sight to behold 💖

For sure! A couple from the church I used to attend owned a Percheron stallion used for breeding. He was mostly kept in a ridiculously small paddock, and never having the chance to stretch his legs made him very nasty-tempered. He had long legs or he wouldn’t have been so tall. You couldn’t pet him; he would scream and hunh-hunh-hunh and come after you to intimidate and to bite, if he could. I’ve never been so scared of an animal in my life! And you couldn’t blame him; clearly the only handling he got was to service mares, and get enough grooming to keep him looking normal. Brave man who groomed him! He was truly a terrifying creature! This was circa 1980, so I’m sure he is long gone, God rest his tormented soul.

The color and look of the breed were refined in the years after the Second World War. There is Good and bad everywhere, it’s heart breaking that any of Gods creatures are mistreated. Horses are highly intelligent beings that pick up on emotions, and react to them. There were horses kept by a riding stable, in the fields at the back of where we lived. They said We children could ride them, as they would like the Exercise. We rode without hard hats or saddles, we just held onto the manes. I used to ride a black Shetland pony called Blackie who was gentle but a little stubborn . And a huge white Hunter called Nancy. I never had an issue with her, until a neighbours older niece visited and insisted on riding with me, dug her heels sharp into Nancys side, I knew her ways and had told her not to do this. She only needed a gentle touch. Nancy was having non of it and snorting her disapproval bucked us both off just inches in front of the grey cesspit in the field. I know she did that on purpose, horses have an amazing sense of humour and she made her point. ( only four houses in middle of no where so our drains went into a sewage tank in the field that was emptied twice a year, and used to pong when over in flow in Summer months.) As we tumbled into the long grass in the field, a few bumps and bruises only. I remember turning to the girl and saying “ I told you not to do that! ” Nancy stood snorting tapping the ground, with one foot! I’m almost sure there was the snicker of a horsey grin! She was quite a lady!
I remember during summer camp as a 12 year old, we went to this farm and they let us ride horses. All of the other kids got the normal size horses, but me, because I was too overweight couldn’t. The farm owner instead let me ride a draft horse which was this big black shiny horse that looked like an Olympic God’s horse. I made all of the other kids jealous because the horse I had rode looked superior than all the others. I guess being fat in that moment paid off and it made me feel special. That was probably one of my favorite childhood stories. And yes, I’m still fat and not proud of it. I have major health issues but I’m working on them. It is just so hard to give up sugar and carbs. The shire and Clydesdale are also known for holding records before as the tallest and heaviest horses
Our new shire that is 3yrs old and 1,90m is already much wider and will likely feel much more like doing the splits 😅😅.

Anyways, nice video because it brought back nostalgia.
I know how you feel. Always been the fat kid. Part of it is how I'm built, part of it is what I eat.
@@ChibiPanda8888 yes part of it is how your built/DNA...meaning don't beat yourself up for where you are at as of today, and while looking back it'll also mean that much more once you see how far you've came in the future... And part of it is what you eat, so don't feel sorry for yourself or make excuses. Don't worry about being responsible for where you are. Stay focused on it being solely your responsibility to get where you want to go. You can take pride in yourself knowing who was responsible for making it happen and getting shit done once youve begun achieving those goals you set for yourself in the future.
Fuck what can't be changed. Change what can be changed. If it's possible that means it can be done if it can be done that means YOU can be the one to do it. Fuck being negative because you don't want to be "fat" anymore. Use both what you don't want as well as what you do want as fuel for your motivation to "just do it".
Positivity is key. Positively is key. Be positively certain in your ability to make it happen and think of yourself and see everything else with positivity.
You can do it. And you are important. Nothing is more important in your life than yourself. Love yourself. Value yourself. Take yourself seriously. Be seriously about taking care of yourself.
I wish you the best stranger. It won't be as simple or as positive as this comment but that's life. It's unfair ugly and complicated. But if you can learn to love yourself you will always have a reason to keep fighting and keep trying and keep pushing for better. That's the most important part of it all is you loving/caring about yourself. Think of your mind/thoughts as a separate being and your physical body as a separate being. Two different entities. One relying on the other to survive & thrive. Your minds intangible thoughts are the only thing that can make it possible for your physical body to improve. Learn to love yourself and look up to yourself and believe in yourself and you can make anything happen for yourself.
I know this was kinda all over the place but there's certainly truth behind what I say. Like I said I wish you the best.
MickyMike... the same goes to you as what I said in that comment to them ^ I intentionally wrote that as a message to both of yall really after reading both of your comments.
I genuinely wish the both of you the best. And I have absolute 100% complete certainty in the both of you. Humans are capable of amazing things. "If they can do it so can I" life isnt equal or fair yes but nobody is more special than the other. We all become the value and capability we see in our own self. If your going to make great things happen for yourself in the future you have to know today and now that to be a fact.
Thank you for your childhood story. Made my day! 😀 Capsules with intestinal bacteria helped me a lot against the hunger for sweets. 20 billion of many different types of bacteria every morning and evening. Now I prefer salty things and can leave sweets behind. Unfortunately I didn't automatically get more craving for vegetables. 🙂 I work on it... Whish you a successful way to a healthy way of live for your body, soul, and spirit!
Clydesdales are my favourite...they make me heart so happy. I adore horses to begin with but Clydies have a special place in my heart.
What beautiful horses! I've never seen a draft horse in person. They're absolutely magnificent! I'd love to befriend one.
