Draft horses are gentle giants, and make wonderful riding horses. The reason they aren't ridden is that not everybody wants to be doing the splits while riding. Secondly, lots of people who ride nowadays do it for sports, so they'd rather ride horses built for jumping. Personally, I'm not into the sports. I'd rather have a gentle companion, and would take a draft horse any day.

I had the pleasure to ride a Belgian draft for cross country for several years. Did lots of natural jumps, walls, coops.... he just floated over them, loved to be out and about. They are so comfortable and easy going and immensely powerful. Love them.

I've seen many people enjoy draft horses as riding horses & what they have said is that they really love their calm temperament, sweet disposition, comfortable smooth gait & willingness.
I would love a draft horse as a riding horse. They are my favourite type of horse.

I've loved horses since I can remember, & it is sad how so many ppl weight these horses down, overloading them & abusing them for the sake of showing them off. Then they toss them into the meat wagon when they aren't "useful" due to the abuse. I'd love to either have the $ to rescue or find a rescuse to volunteer, but there aren't any in my area

I have 2 draft x Pony crosses, so they’re just short draft horses to be honest.. but I’ve outgrown them.. and so ive ridden a few real draft horses and they were the most gentle horses ever.

I have long legs, so I actually prefer a nice belly, haha- i cannot find my lower leg for the life of me on a slender horse, although I am still learning, and i did primarily ride drafts at my first barn-

Just like with dogs, different breeds of horses were once created for specific purposes. For a draft horse you want a strong ass horse with a gentle temper, but you also, crucially, want a healthy horse wich can work hard every day for many years without setting sick or injured. A work horse is a great investment in the food it eats and in the stable space it needs. People invested in these giant horses because they expected them to pay off in the long run.
But just like with dogs, people have begun breeding extreme traits into already extreme breeds.
This is why these horses look like bodybuilders. They do not look healthy. They are not this big because they have worked out a lot, but because breeders have selected the largest individuals over and over, with little concern about wether it is healthy. These giants are prone to injuries because of their massive weight and tendency to develop muscles. Just like humans who are naturally extremely big and/or strong, their ligaments and tendons, even their skeletons are often not proportional to the power of their muscles and they can literally rip themselves apart if they excert too much power.
Competitive strong-men puts lots of their training into building specific muscularure to protect their spine and joints from their own massive strength.
It is sad to see animals being put through it, just because owners want to show off a giant horse, when there is no need for them to be that extra large.
I'll bet that if you look up what a Belgian draft horse looked like in the mid 1800's, they were still huge horses but nowhere near as extreme as these.

    • @margomoore4527
      @margomoore4527 4 місяці тому +9

For sure! A couple from the church I used to attend owned a Percheron stallion used for breeding. He was mostly kept in a ridiculously small paddock, and never having the chance to stretch his legs made him very nasty-tempered. He had long legs or he wouldn’t have been so tall. You couldn’t pet him; he would scream and hunh-hunh-hunh and come after you to intimidate and to bite, if he could. I’ve never been so scared of an animal in my life! And you couldn’t blame him; clearly the only handling he got was to service mares, and get enough grooming to keep him looking normal. Brave man who groomed him! He was truly a terrifying creature! This was circa 1980, so I’m sure he is long gone, God rest his tormented soul.

Yeah, some of the ones shown look quite tall, and their legs sure don't seem short.

They generally have very accurate horses in the game, but the fact the they called the Arabian at Owanjila lake a chestnut pissed me off xD
A chestnut is a horse with brown mane, tail and coat. That horse is a bay, as it’s legs and default mane and tail are black.

I used to ride a draft horse a few years ago. He was the most gentle, friendly horse one could ever imagine - and his gaits were amazingly comfortable too. Of course he wasn't as fight or agile as the common riding horse, but you could ride on him for hours and not feel sore or pain at all. Even his faster gaits felt extremely comfortable. Wish I could go back to these times.

Drafts and draft crosses make phenomenal riding horses, especially for kids. They are calm, compassionate, level headed and sure footed. The crosses also make for good competition horses in dressage, show jumping etc. they are smooth, have extremely beautiful movement and feel like riding a couch. Lol
