Great point! Letting people know that it is actually a sliding scale between compost and mulch. Oh, the compost pile did not decompose much? Cool! Well composted mulch! HA HA HA The idea here is that I used to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I will produce better compost someday soon, but I cannot wait till then to grow food, eh?
I am truly looking forward to growing Comfrey. Chop and drop material right where you need it! And so much more. WARNING Do not try to get Comfrey to grow in a desert during the hottest part of the year. LOL I had to try, because you never know. Well, fall is coming for round two. :o)

After watching this video, I found out you moved to NC from the great state of Texas. What part of Texas.? I am in West Texas, San Angelo, and have been thinking of pulling stakes, and moving to an area which has a more conducive environment to growing....ie. more rainfall. Anyway, it is hard to think about leaving all the work I have done so far, but, on the other hand, it seems if I was in an area which was more conducive to growing, I could replicate what has taken me fifteen years, in a much shorter time. Any regrets on your move?

You mention not to use an auger- mind if I ask why? We’re hoping to plant a couple hundred trees next spring and I was planning on using a battery powered ryobi auger, but i may rethink if there’s a good reason not to!
I should’ve mentioned in this video that if you’re dealing with soil that has a high clay content The auger will seriously compact the sides of the hole. Some young trees are not able to put roots past it.
Thank you for the kind response! We only get seeds from peaceful valley. We try to get all of our bare root trees within a couple of hours of where we live in North Carolina.

In my garden (urban food forest) I like to think of it this way: The single-purpose of each individual plant is to provide exudates to the microbes in the soil. Nothing else. Just that. The single-purpose of the garden itself is to feed us. As a plant, if they are alive and healthy, they are doing their job. If I am smart enough to know that a plant that produces exudates for the soil AND produces food for me is better than a plant that only produces exudates, right? My job is to make sure the right things are planted, and the wrong things are not allowed to grow. There are more kinds of plants then we will ever be able to plant, so, why not pick plants that do a lot, right?
I'm a 5'3" 70-year-old woman planting an orchard in light silty sandy soil (very low clay percentage). Please explain to me why I should break my back, or spend a fortune hiring somebody else to break their back, rather than use an auger! The auger on my micro-mini excavator seems like a perfectly reasonable way to plant 100 trees and shrubs. If you don't explain WHY - I will ignore you.
