  • Singapore national football team goalkeeper Hassan Sunny has requested Chinese football enthusiasts to stop sending him money. This follows a surge in donations after his performance in Singapore’s 3-1 defeat to Thailand inadvertently aided China’s progression to the next round of World Cup qualifiers.
During the match on Tuesday, the 40-year-old goalkeeper made an impressive 11 saves, preventing Thailand from securing the necessary goal difference to overtake China in the group standings. Despite their victory, Thailand fell short of qualifying for the next round draw scheduled for June 27th.
Hassan’s performance garnered significant attention on Chinese social media platforms, leading to the widespread circulation of the payment QR code for the food stall he operates with his wife. Chinese fans utilized this information to express their gratitude through monetary donations.
While initially amused by the influx of financial support, Hassan expressed concerns regarding the legality and sustainability of such actions. In an interview with Singaporean broadcaster CNA, he stated, “I did enjoy it for a while...But having said that, I was thinking when is this going to stop? Is this legal? I think we have to stop somewhere.”
Furthermore, Hassan raised concerns about potential scams targeting well-intentioned fans, as fabricated QR codes began appearing online.
In a social media post published on Thursday, Hassan addressed the situation directly, stating, “I really appreciate your support for me these past few days, which has allowed me to fully experience the passion of Chinese football fans.”
