    Un duelo que Musashi lamentaría por el resto de su vida, pues entendió que una persona como Sasaki Kojiro no debería haber muerto.

    I read in somewhere that when the two meet for the first time Musashi beat him in spirit.

      The scene says there weren't witnesses to this encounter.
      Nevertheless Musashi is a rough thug walking down the steps. Kojiro is a refined gentleman who carries himself as such in public. Kojiro therefore was off guard. Kojiro was walking up the steps. Musashi with his demon inner core was quick to bear out menacing energy walking down the steps.
      It was a matter of styles and incidental topography. Musashi was always keen to exploit details such as terrain and sun angle. In this case it was instant happen stance.
      Kojiro was actually the calmer and reserved. Musashi instantly reared up recognizing his advantage of walking down toward Kojiro.
      Musashi's prime impulse was on-guard fear in actual inner core. Musashi feared Kojiro until he defeated him at that island duel. The smaller dog growls first.

      @@georgehunter2813 In fact, they probably never met. Kojiro was already an old man by the time Musashi had his first interview with Hosokawa's clan.
      In addition, no period document mentions their duel. Eiji Yoshikawa's novel has influenced popular culture but remains essentially a fiction.

    • @georgehunter2813
      @georgehunter2813 3 роки тому +3

      @@yvidiot Probably so. Yoshikawa's novel speaks more of the social atmosphere and dynamics of the period than the real history of these two men. Aside from Yoshikawa there are several movie dramatizations revolving around these two main characters. If there is no direct documentation of the subject, then we are left with only verbal history. As we know the story can change and become distorted if transmitted largely by spoken word only.

    Saw the Korean and English subtitled presentation "Crazy Samurai: 1 vs 400." Like that production and representation of Musashi. He fights with passion. Does not struggle crudely like in this production. That Musashi I find admirable even though he is still a butcher. He is an expert at taking on many men at once which is what I originally admired Musashi for. Quick and precise.
    The question remains, "What was he fighting for?"

  • @georgehunter2813

    What is most noticeable in this first unspoken encounter is the contrast in class and the upbringing. The difference in clothing and gear says it clear as day. Kojiro is a noble samuria from a good established familiy. Musashi is a bumpkin samuria from a bumpkin family. The difference in upbringing is reflected in their fighting styles.
    Kojiro's style is calligraphy. Musashi's style is crude brutal graffiti. At their final duel both stuck to their individual styles. Kojiro made a calligraphic stroke on Musashi's forehead. Musashi was not so graceful. Musashi went for the kill. Graffiti bumpkin.
    Spell your name Miyamoto Musashi!

      What this means is that Kojiro is a manifestation of this Zeitgeist Musashi lived and despised, if you've read the Book of Five Rings: the overaestheticisation of fencing (and other sciences as well). Musashi the utilitarian pragmatist trumps Kojiro the aesthetic idealist. Substance over appearance.

    • @bathtubbarracuda2581
      @bathtubbarracuda2581 5 років тому +9

      And even though Musashi did hold the bushido code as part of his own, it's ironic that one who would follow his utilitarian philosophy, of using all means to achieve one's objective, to its logical conclusion, would probably just use a gun instead of a sword.

      Miyamoto Musashi is not his real name. His birth name was Shinmen Takezo and he was actually the son of Shinmen Munisai, a legenday samurai.
      He may have grown up a bumpkin but, his bloodline is more noble than Kojiro's.

      The Imperial Army of 20th century fame was full of bumpkin samurai and wanna be samurai. Tough Yokohama boys, and Korean prison conscripts. Class matters. Can be foundational to character.

      Shinmen Takezo (Musahi) actually came from a very good line. His stry is fascinating if you ever read it. Even to why he doesnt formally bathe, due to the betrayal of Osugi when the army was trying to capture him. They almost got him and he vowed never to make that same mistake again.
      It certainly helped that for all his natural talents he was a VERY large man as well.

      Writers usually just make up pretty much whatever story for Kojiro’s past because there aren’t many records of it. The only thing people are pretty sure about is that he was a real person.
