  • The Popish Plot is among the most outlandish but serious moments in British political history plunging the body politick into near crisis for over three years and resulting in the executions of dozens of innocent men.
Oates' allegations revolved around an alleged Catholic plot led by English Jesuits to murder Charles II and place his Catholic brother James on the throne. While complex it can be distilled into a simple narrative that describes an irrational fear of Catholics based on concerns of another Gunpowder Plot. Oates' allegations carried enough truth to be believable and generated a hysteria rarely seen in England since. It was 17th century fake news on steroids.

My lineage goes way back to Edward Colman. I demand reparations for his wrongful execution lmao

My lineage goes back to Scroggs haha. I'm actually researching the Popish Plot specifically because Sir William Scroggs is my super Great Grandfather (I have not figured out how many generations back it was yet). I am just curious about him since he is the only historical figure that I have found in my ancestry so far.
