For real, makes more sense to a degree, it literally just needs to be enough to see the figure and the rest can be cardboard. Even if it's cheap cardboard more or heavier tape can fix that.

This sudden turnaround is absolutely the result of big box retailers pressuring Hasbro to stop selling them product that can be so easily damaged or stolen. Hasbro has already sold these toys to retailers, so when a ton of toys get damaged or stolen it's Walmart and Target that take the financial hit on write offs. The only reason Hasbro is backtracking now (I theorize of course) is because big box retailers are threatening not to carry any more of their product. Walmart can do just fine without stocking transformers and marvel legends, but Hasbro will absolutely crumble without major retail support.

the open packaging thing (alongside horrible distribution due to a couple stubborn shelf-warmers clogging up otherwise bare shelves) is pretty much the reason why I only buy my figures online. as much as I want to drop $25 on a Diaclone Burnout, seeing the figure caked in dust and fingerprints makes me wonder "Who's touched this? where have their hands been?" and then I see a headless Legacy Arcee on the peg next to it and confirm that it's for the best that I chose this path.

there's 2 harsh realities for that

Completely agree with you that this was never about environmentalism and was just a cost-cutting measure. Here’s to hoping the new plastic doesn’t increase the prices further, because… let’s face it, it could, because it’s Hasbro. The vandalism, toy swapping and theft was such a huge problem. Even with the toys that couldn’t have their heads easily pulled off, you could tell that someone *tried* to do it. The two recent Studio Series Arcees almost always had their heads detached, though I never saw one with the pulled actually removed. This definitely feels more like a response to retailer complaints masquerading as listening to fan feedback, because the fan feedback was *immediate* and still ignored.

Kinda 50/50 on windowless. I like that I can just untie the strings on my figure to get it out of the box, but I just know if this was a thing back when I worked at Walmart, I'd see people returning Leader Class Lazer Prime or Skyquake boxes with half a Transmetal Waspinator in there. I may be an outlier here, but I actually preferred the plastic free packaging overall. Was it great? No, it had problems, particularly with Transformers and the potential for theft and QC issues. My argument with the theft part, at least for the closed boxes was that they could have used anti tanper tape like what Lego does so that there's at least a tell that it's been opened. With regard to the pictures of the toy on closed packages, most toy companies (including Hasbro) put a legal disclaimer along the lines of "final product may vary". Basically saying that the photos they use of the "actual toy" are most likely hand-painted prototypes. Granted, the ones today are much closer to the final production run but you can still find minor variances (missing/changed paint apps, plastic color shades, etc.).

I suspect going back to plastic windows is a combination of multiple factors including unhappy hardcore collectors and that every single transformer that's missing a head means a whole plastic toy robot ends up in landfill as opposed to just a plastic bubble.
Yes in theory I suppose all the headless ones could be sent back to the distributior/manufacturer but the supply chains are not set up for such logistics so at best they'll just end up in an amazon returns pallet or something.

Just for Information. From January 2024 EU and UK will begin to request submission of data of packaging, then charge all companies that:
1 - produce or import products into Europe,
2 - has an annual turnover exceed a certain limit (in UK it is £1 million), and
3 - use packaging exceed certain weight per year (in UK it is 25 metric tonnes)
this charge does not exempt recyclable materials like cardboard, recyclable plastic, or biodegradable material. the only exemption is on reused packaging (ie packaging that are sent back to manufacturers). I have not check any further (will do because my employer is likely needing to submit data as well) I believe the category of material used in the packaging will be charged at a different rate.
For Hasbro, this will literately mean that when they import toys, they will expect an additional "tax" payable to their local government. this legislation in Europe has begun to take effect as of March this year, as companies are expected to monitor and report the data later this year in preparation for 2024.

I don't think the widow really adds any structural integrity. I have seen packages in store damaged the same exact way even when they had the windows. It's way more common now bacause of all the vandalism but it wasn't entirely unheard of before the windowless packaging. A lot of stores even use to discount any products that had damaged packaging though they don't really do that anymore and still expect you to pay full price. Part of the reason for that change is they figured out people were damaging the packaging on purpose just to get the discount.
Also... the funniest act of vandalism I've seen is someone removed the head specifically only from Ironhide so he matched his original toy. I don't condone doing this ever but I did consider buying that Ironhide intentionally knowing it was damaged just for the cheeky G1 reference. If it wasn't such an expensive joke I would have.

Marvel Legends has been heavily criticized because they *don't* use photos of the actual figure, instead they use renders of a prototype or idealized figure. This can be quite misleading in some cases, such as having box art that might depict (more expensive) pinless joints only for the final production figure inside to use (cheaper) visible joint pins.
The more conspiracy theory minded have suggested this is intentional, that Hasbro is taking advantage of windowless boxes to make their products look better than they actually are. The more realistic view is simply that the box art is coming from early models that were created long before the figures went through all cost-reduction and actual production.

I stopped buying instantly as an in-box collector. That's probably what hit their pocketbook the most in-box collectors. The stores usually pay them unless damaged when they come in, I believe. If it becomes unsellable then the store writes it off, and the taxpayers pay for it. I don't see the transformers on the list. I hope they fix the windows on those as well. They said across the 6 inch line, but no mention of transformers.

I understand that Hasbro wanted to respond to "Environmentalist Concerns" - Christ, I was a Member of Greenpeace so I am part of that audience... But the Windowless Packaging is NEVER what we were looking for...
I recall and I am sure I can still find pictures of some Older Marvel Legends Figures as well as Transformers and Star Wars Toys for Collectors that had First, A Cardboard Display Piece... No big Issue there... Then, A Plastic Tray to keep it all in place, OK... That's getting a bit overboard... Then a Cardboard Box with Window... And THEN A PLASTIC OUTER SHELL TO KEEP THE BOX SAFE!
Marvel Legends used to come in a Plastic Container with a Cardboard and a Plastic Insert!!!! WHY!? That's THREE LAYERS OF PACKAGING!!!
They could have down a Simple Windowed Box... With the figure helped in place like they do with Barbie... On a Carboard Insert and VASTLY REDUCED PLASTIC WASTE!
I make no bones about it... I personally believe that Hasbro were DELIBERATE in taking the "Less Plastic Packaging" to its most EXTREME conclusion to het fans and collectors to protest against Environmentalists!!! They KNEW there was a Middle ground that would not be perfect but would be better received ... Jesus, When most of us moan about Waste Plastic, We are taking about GROCERIES being wrapped in Plastic Bags despite being BOXED, or even NATYRALLY PROITECTED such as Fruit and Vegetables (Why is my BOXED Frozen Pizza placed on an Excess cardboard Tray I am going to Bin and WRAPPED IN PLASTIC!? Don't tell me its to keep the topping on as I have already seen other Frozen Pizzas that JUST USE A BOX!)

As a collector Im happy that toys will have plastic boxes again, but I think that this means also the price is gonna be higher for them, like 40 for deluxe ect. Maybe Im wrong, maybe not, but I definitely can see them doin it. And there is also question how much they will highering their toy prices, until people stops buying them because the price will be too expensive for ordinary people with families and houses and taxes and... to afford. Cause even if we love this hobby of buying transformers, marvel legends, star wars etc., how many of you got into trouble with your parents, partners, because of WASTING A ENORMOUS CHUNK OF MONEY FOR TOYS. Cause even if a lot of you dont see it that way, they are just toys, ment to be played with, ment to broke, ment to be throw out to thrash and ment to just take money from you. I know many of you, us, are gonna say but its what we love its part of us and da da da, but as an adult with own family, kids, house, dog, car, it's not very logical to spend that much money for a just toy. If it would be affordable like 10 15 20 years ago for deluxe 8usd, voyage 17usd and leader 30usd OK that is great price, but that wont happend cause of inflation and many other fske crap. So Im asking HOW MANY OF YOU ARE WILLING TO THROW MONEY OUT OF WINDOW JUST FOR TOY, AND WHAT PRICE POINT IS YOUR STOP POINT WHEN YOU SAY ok Im done not buyin or hoe many of you would say ok If Im not able to afford this Im gonna steal it, or steal money form your parents partners friends etc. for JUST A TOY.

If the toy gets bought in box with no window it was either a not worth $50 cereal or stolen toy not returned. Someone can take a shot everytime i say #bringbackaltmodepacking.

@@Arufonsa1 Greenwashing, also called "green sheen", is a form of advertising or marketing spin in which green PR and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organization's products, aims and policies are environmentally friendly.
Basically they did an "environtmental" thing but it they did it for financial reasons. aka to be cheaper for them to make and not for actual environmental impact
It is entirely the intent behind it that is the issue. Yes they should put less plastic in their packaging but it wasnt for the benefit of the environment

@@sabregunner1 I think that’s fair and quite obvious. I would never make the claim Hasbro was altruistic. But I don’t think this answers the question.
