- Zenaida Yanowsky and Roberto Bolle in The Royal Ballet's Marguerite and Armand, now available to own on DVD and Blu-ray: www.roh.org.uk/...
Three contrasting ballets by The Royal Ballet’s Founder Choreographer come together on a new DVD / Blu-Ray: The Dream (1964) is an enchanting adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to music by Mendelssohn. Symphonic Variations (1946) is an early Ashton masterpiece, and a breathtaking, abstract work on the beauty of pure movement. Marguerite and Armand (1963), here danced by former Royal Ballet Principal Zenaida Yanowsky and Guest Artist Roberto Bolle, is a tragic love story of great lyric beauty. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House is conducted by Emmanuel Plasson.
Frederick Ashton created Marguerite and Armand for Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in 1963, as a celebration of their unique dance partnership. The narrative was drawn from the play La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, which also inspired Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton concentrates the play’s tragic essence in choreography of great intensity - Fonteyn recalled that rehearsals for the work contained ‘a passion more real than life itself’.
The ballet is set to Franz Liszt’s La lugubre gondola and his famous Piano Sonata in B Minor. It depicts the burgeoning love between Marguerite and Armand, movingly expressed through passionate lifts and increasingly free movements. However, the lovers’ happiness is threatened by social convention and the ‘gilded cage’ in which Marguerite lives - evoked by Cecil Beaton in his elegant stage designs. The final pas de deux, as Marguerite lies dying in Armand’s arms, is among the most moving in Ashton’s output.
Frederick Ashton created more than one hundred works during his lifetime (1904-88). For further information, please visit www.frederickashton.org.uk.

It is so much more beautiful when the dancers are bit older who dance Marguerite & Armand. The very young ones are great too.
Yeah.. it becomes like a soap opera
After 23 years 👏what a wonderful choice for a Swansong.💖 Zenaida and Roberto, you couldn't ask for two more talented individuals.
She is wonderful! So expressive and artistic and preсise in every movement and gesture. Thank you for sharing.
What expressive arms & hands this dancer has, her movements are exquisite. This isn't a ballet I have seen before, & it's a wonderfully romantic pas de deux. Sometimes dancers can be technically brilliant but the feeling simply isn't there. These 2, otoh, are perfect together, flawless yet very emotional too.
One of my favourite books ever and one of the most beautiful ballets. Love it, Zenaida is so beautiful...
I'm not crying, you're crying
What beauty! Those slow developpes she does are more expressive than words. Who knew people can talk with their feet?....
And WHO IS THE FABULOUS PIANIST??! Oh my gosh, what playing! He/she should absolutely be credited in the description!
Omg, such an excellent actress too.
Awesome Roberto Bolle.... i love that!
Beautiful
I love Zenaida, such a gorgeous artist 🌷!
Zenaida was such a great dancer and actress as well
The section starting at 1:20 is INCREDIBLE.
This is stunning choreography done to stunning music by two legends of their craft.
Bolle and Yanowsky!!!! I wish I can this live! they are both so amazing!!
zen is shining💕
I agree with most of the comments here that the skirt is infuriating, especially when we will never see Zenaida dancing this again (please come back and perform as a guest artist!!!). Such good playing from the pianist as well
She is so incredible!!!!!
absolutely exquisite
OH GOD ZEN I MISS YOU SO MUCH
So beautiful ❤
So beautiful and heartbreaking!! C❤❤❤
So Beautiful❤❤
Bello bellissimo, perfetto tecnicamente e... sensuale
This so beautyfull even exist
I love this very much
Mostruosamente bravi e superbi!
Love ❤
If this performance was Zenaida’s swan song, I’m crying harder.
GEWELDIG!!!
And since you guys seem to be quite generous lately when it comes to posting excerpts from performances, would you be able to post some with Natalia Osipova in Anastasia or Rhapsody? Or perhaps Steven McRae? Love them both but their performances are rarely featured on your social media sites. It's a shame since they are (in my opinion) the best dancers of their generation.
Yes. Please more performance and less of this embarrassing fake rehearsal mularky.
This skirt its hiding a lot of her performance
beautiful B minor sonata
Stunning
ZENAIDA dances larger than life ♥
I wish the skirt was at least translucent, regardless they're both wonderful
and suddenly i’m crying
the dress😭😭😭
Am I correct in thinking that Bolle was not at his best? I sensed a certain heaviness at the beginning of the pas. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
His thighs have gotten heavier looking. I saw him dance the Balanchine "Apollo" variation recently, and he looked all wrong--too muscular--for the part.
Personally I think he is past his prime and should retire. He is 43 and that is much older than most male dancers are retiring. The body is no longer working so well. I remember seeing Nureyev performance of Giselle at 45 and that was almost painfull to watch. It´s really sad to see once in a time great artist going downhill fast. I understand it´s a hard desicion. Especially if they love performing. Great respect for those, who have the sence to leave the stage still with grace, when the time comes. Bolle should watch out, his limitations are really starting to show. Sadly the time will catch up with us all.
I totally agree with you, also, he doesn’t follow the music
Costume is so important. This curtain pelmet thing is not working for me, nor did Rojo's red frock and pink shoes (3 legged monster effect as her legs indistinguishable from her partner's) . R.B. needs to up its game for these marvellous dancers.
❤
This was absolutely mesmerizing, but could someone please explain what happened (story wise) to me, who is very new to the nuances of ballet??
Isabella1497 this pas de deux happens right after Armand's father talking to Marguerite, persuading her to give Armand up so as not to ruin his reputation (because Marguerite is a socialite). At the beginning of the pas de deux, when Armand first arrives, Marguerite seems to be hiding her face from Armand (both the pench promenade and the lift) because she wants to hide her tears and she can't bear the fact that she will have to leave him to love him. Just my interpretation though
@@s02229 This is correct.
Nureyev and la Fontaine!
Time to revisit the original costume designs. Beaton would not be happy!
ROBERTO BOLLE! !
holy shit ı am dead
Prefere Polunin rather than Bolle in this role
Yes, and Zarakhova too.
I'm not so sure this is a good role for Robert Bolle; Zenaida Yanowsky outshines him. She is amazing.
I believe this excerpt is taken from her last performance. It seemed to me that he purposely made the performance more about her
Lolly LuLa Yes. I've seen the whole performance. I just think that his technique has faltered lately since he's gotten older. I do think he is a great dancer. This just isn't his best performance.
She looks so much like my ballet teacher it’s disturbing!
Her costume upstaged her performance
Something seems not right here, either too harsh or too choreographed
Correzione a me piacciono piu' di Nureyev, mi saro' distratta.
Zenaida is a great dancer but she is too tall for this ballet imho.
She's even too big and gawky for Roberto Bolle. Not a great ballet and they are struggling here.
She's way too tall and gawky. Not even Roberto can handle her. It's an atrocious ballet anyway.
