  • Zenaida Yanowsky and Roberto Bolle in The Royal Ballet's Marguerite and Armand, now available to own on DVD and Blu-ray: www.roh.org.uk/...
    Three contrasting ballets by The Royal Ballet’s Founder Choreographer come together on a new DVD / Blu-Ray: The Dream (1964) is an enchanting adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to music by Mendelssohn. Symphonic Variations (1946) is an early Ashton masterpiece, and a breathtaking, abstract work on the beauty of pure movement. Marguerite and Armand (1963), here danced by former Royal Ballet Principal Zenaida Yanowsky and Guest Artist Roberto Bolle, is a tragic love story of great lyric beauty. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House is conducted by Emmanuel Plasson.
    Frederick Ashton created Marguerite and Armand for Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in 1963, as a celebration of their unique dance partnership. The narrative was drawn from the play La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, which also inspired Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton concentrates the play’s tragic essence in choreography of great intensity - Fonteyn recalled that rehearsals for the work contained ‘a passion more real than life itself’.
    The ballet is set to Franz Liszt’s La lugubre gondola and his famous Piano Sonata in B Minor. It depicts the burgeoning love between Marguerite and Armand, movingly expressed through passionate lifts and increasingly free movements. However, the lovers’ happiness is threatened by social convention and the ‘gilded cage’ in which Marguerite lives - evoked by Cecil Beaton in his elegant stage designs. The final pas de deux, as Marguerite lies dying in Armand’s arms, is among the most moving in Ashton’s output.
    Frederick Ashton created more than one hundred works during his lifetime (1904-88). For further information, please visit www.frederickashton.org.uk.

    It is so much more beautiful when the dancers are bit older who dance Marguerite & Armand. The very young ones are great too.

    What expressive arms & hands this dancer has, her movements are exquisite. This isn't a ballet I have seen before, & it's a wonderfully romantic pas de deux. Sometimes dancers can be technically brilliant but the feeling simply isn't there. These 2, otoh, are perfect together, flawless yet very emotional too.

    And WHO IS THE FABULOUS PIANIST??! Oh my gosh, what playing! He/she should absolutely be credited in the description!

    And since you guys seem to be quite generous lately when it comes to posting excerpts from performances, would you be able to post some with Natalia Osipova in Anastasia or Rhapsody? Or perhaps Steven McRae? Love them both but their performances are rarely featured on your social media sites. It's a shame since they are (in my opinion) the best dancers of their generation.

      His thighs have gotten heavier looking. I saw him dance the Balanchine "Apollo" variation recently, and he looked all wrong--too muscular--for the part.

      Personally I think he is past his prime and should retire. He is 43 and that is much older than most male dancers are retiring. The body is no longer working so well. I remember seeing Nureyev performance of Giselle at 45 and that was almost painfull to watch. It´s really sad to see once in a time great artist going downhill fast. I understand it´s a hard desicion. Especially if they love performing. Great respect for those, who have the sence to leave the stage still with grace, when the time comes. Bolle should watch out, his limitations are really starting to show. Sadly the time will catch up with us all.

    Costume is so important. This curtain pelmet thing is not working for me, nor did Rojo's red frock and pink shoes (3 legged monster effect as her legs indistinguishable from her partner's) . R.B. needs to up its game for these marvellous dancers.

    • @s02229
      @s02229 6 років тому +14

      Isabella1497 this pas de deux happens right after Armand's father talking to Marguerite, persuading her to give Armand up so as not to ruin his reputation (because Marguerite is a socialite). At the beginning of the pas de deux, when Armand first arrives, Marguerite seems to be hiding her face from Armand (both the pench promenade and the lift) because she wants to hide her tears and she can't bear the fact that she will have to leave him to love him. Just my interpretation though
