Hokkaido has two good seasons, winter and summer. I enjoy skiing in Hokkaido every winter, it's wonderful to spend the day on the ski slopes, soak in a hot spring bath afterward, and then spend the rest of the evening next to the fire in the lobby drinking with friends. I've ridden the alto l'angliru in Spain, but am not hardcore enough to cycle around Hokkaido in the winter. On the positive side, the bears are hibernating. Summer cycling in Hokkaido has to be the best of any place I have experienced. Cooler weather than the rest of Japan, smooth roads, light traffic, fresh air, spectacular scenery, and excellent food. It's only a little more than an hour by air from Tokyo, and transporting bikes is painless.
This was my favorite one yet, love the ambience of the whole video. When the man helped you carry the bike box to the train station, that was a MOMENT! Look forward to the next one :)
This video is such a great reminder: just embrace it and make the best out of the situation. It must have been very exhausting and mentally challenging to cycle in the cold, and furthermore to sleep in the cold and still you seem happy!
thank you SO much Boru!!! i've had similar struggles to you, it's a constant battle too this day like you say. but sitting down with my family in the lounge watching your videos on the TV has been incredible. we just rolled out a world map on the ground and i'm planning my own trip next month!! thank you Boru, i'll be here for the whole ride :) all the best from new zealand!
Epic dude! Looked like an amazing time! Just getting into bike packing and this is something I would love to do, even if its a smaller trip. Keep up the great work and content!
awesome video - great vibes! I just got into biking last year but I couldn't imagine riding a single day in these snowy and freezing conditions. Its awesome to see all the friendly and welcoming people you've met, ill keep an eye on your journey from now on
Kudos to you! I am amazed that you started in Hokkaido in winter in Japan rather than in Kyushu and headed north to Kyoto. That is a beautiful ride especially if you go via Shikoku... I rode the whole length of Japan (excluding Okinawa) this summer from the most southerly point of Kyushu, Cape Sata to the most northerly point of Hokkaido, Cape Soya in 19 days. It was sooooo hot and humid! I think you would enjoy that one day. Best of luck for the rest of your journey.
I enjoy your storytelling so so much, my dude. You seem very honest and genuinely kind. Thanks for sharing your journey. Bang bang! If you ever be in Almaty, Kazakhstan pls let me know!
Lugging the bike box reminded me of my cycling trip across South Korea where I had to lug my box to the train station. It hurt my wrists. Japan and Korea have weird strict and confusing rules regarding with trains and buses. I covered my bike in a black plastic bag and snuck into the baggage area of the high-speed train. Looking forward to the rest of the series. This is inspiring to cycle across Japan now.
lovely video. your local friends are great :) your photos are great. Your choice to go at your own pace and take the train when you need to, rather than rushing to bike all the way to osaka by your deadline is great.
It's mind boggling how you can ride at -10 with JUST MTB shoes and SOCKS! How are your toes not frozen off yet! :O Other than that, simply an amazing video. Made me wanna go out on a loooooong bicycle trip as well.
Making me miss riding through Japan, I hit Hokkaido the same time as a typhoon sadly so ended up cutting it short and heading back down to Honshu. And Conbini food is the best for bikepacking, a Korokke and some chicken got me through lots of rough days!
The Japanese motorist is far more considerate of the cyclist than in many countries so thats a great place tom start from. The Rindo sections off road are amazing and the mountain routes are beautiful. The Combini's are always a great source of calories after a hard day in the saddle. Mont Bel sells cheap overshoes.
You're probably in warmer climes by now, but Neoprene shoe tip covers are a lot of help, Merino socks and keep your feet DRY at all times. Change socks when wet and don't get socks that are too thick that cut off the feet circulation. when changing socks look at your toes and make sure they blanche. Your young though it should be OK but keep an eye for frostbite on fingertips, toes and nose. If you are a good at taking apart your bike and making it a compact package you can get one of those green/blue tarps and if it is neat looking sometimes a train station will allow you with it on board. Will be very difficult in wet winter though. Your toes look OK but those shoes are definitely too thin. Ok saw u got Neoprene shoe covers. You could have also gone from Sapporo to Tomokamai and taken a night (Sleep for 5-8 hours on board) Ferry to Hachinoe. Yeah Japan rocks for cycling if you're fit. :) 🚲
Hokkaido by bicycle in winter with merely 3-season clothing?!? I've cycled Hokkaido a lot, but I certainly wouldn't attempt to do that! If you need cheap clothing, drop by any home center and they always have outdoor workman's clothing at good prices. If you can find the chain, "Workman", even better. For a "rinkobukuro" (bike bag), try using a blue tarp, also from the home center. If you wrap it up well with bungee cords the trains will accept it. The Japan Sea coast of Honshu is a lot colder and has far more snow than the Pacific side of Honshu. You may want to consider that.
This video makes me overthink the trip that I am in right now. I will be going east in Turkey, which means: cold. And I am a bit scared because of it haha. But this video makes me think: 'mate, don't cry, look at this guy having a frozen bike'. But I want to know one thing, which pants are you wearing in this video? It would help me so much!

Hi, amazing video. Wondering what the bike model you are riding and if it is stock or has been customized? Thanks.
Yes!! It’s so tough way !! Help yourself and take it easy!!😢😢😢
inspiring! Safe travels Boru

I've been living/cycling in Japan (Tokyo) for a while and I always complain about the cold. I feel like a wimp watching your videos. lol
Awsome .can you upload more videos about japan?
coming
Amazing aventure, thanks à lot 🙏 what brand are your helmet and pants ?
Helmet is the Specialized Prevail 3, pants are the Albion Zoa riding trousers!

Hey please chime in as to where you are and if you're OK. 7.6 Earthquake and some Tsunami.
I was in Kyoto when the earthquake hit, but we were fortunately far away from the affected area on the western coast. Thank you for checking in

Great journey ❤❤
I hope you come to Osaka city
Quality!
Overshoes are a must hey, took me 3 colds till I gave in haha. Some use latex gloves as a layer before putting on cycling gloves. Best of luck ❤
Also some crisp packets between sock and shoe, inside the overshoe. Bye bye cold toes. Thank you!
@@allroadsconsidered 🤯
The cold is notting if you have a good kit but how did you survile from an ice on the road. Its super slippy😢😢😢
very good soup!!!!!!!!

Natto is definitely the Japanese food that was most foreign to my western tastebuds. An acquired taste, to be sure
what an experience. very hard conditions . you make me dream from my sweet heat bed !!!

Love from India 🤙 would love to ride with you someday! Keep going and love your journey 😁

Meeting other cyclist and getting help and are friendly ...awsome
Boru!!
👏
Anyone know what size tires he has?
I’m on Specialized Pathfinders. 42 on the rear and 38 on the front (it should be 42)
God I love Japan and the Japanese.
🇹🇼 ❤
To paraphrase Bashō, this looks more like a “White Road from the Deep North”
Nice Video.
But why using clipless Pedals and that horrible shoes in winter conditions. Self punishment i think 😂
Hey!come to cycle in Taiwan together!
Can in ask the question about the shower ? 😂 how do you do ?
Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t 😅
good video! If you need any help in Miyagi, let me know.
Thank you! I passed Miyagi a couple of days ago, but am tempted to come back!
@@allroadsconsidered have a nice ride !
No wonder your feet are cold… need some booties in that frigid weather!!
まじさむそう
Looks like Finnish weather. XD
Always wanted to winter cycle Japan, thanks although cyclist never learn…3 layers of tight clothing never gonna work u can’t trap air
Yup, I ride in a thermal long sleeve, t shirt, Albion zoa jacket and Albion zoa rain jacket. Very toasty whilst moving
