Brilliant do see my fave declutter queen working with junk journalers. I remember being Gob smacked by Dana's explanation of what a container was and have been applying this concept throughout my home for the last year or so. You are a brave woman to do this on camera Cara. Thanks so much🤗🤗
I agree. I’m decluttering my art studio and I had a large painting to finish framing plus another smaller one. It made a world of difference to get that off my work table!
Cara, over a year ago when for the first time I heard Dana say "finishing a project is considered decluttering", I had that AHA moment too!! Beautiful how your face lit up @ that realization!! 😃💗
I love the recommendation to DEFINE your work space. By doing so, and identifying it's purpose, we can also establish what it is NOT i.e. storage, display space, etc. Thanks Dana and Cara!
This has been so helpful for me. I thought I was the only one with a messy craft room. I am doing different sections of my craft space in 1 hr sections. I find it so much easier than looking at the whole space. It may take a while, but I will get there.
The problem I found was when I first started doing junk journals I thought I had to have all these tools that the you tube ladies I watched had. Then they tell you they keep all these scraps and they have to have every color under the sun of inks....you don't need all these things to make junk journals and have fun. This is where my clutter came in. I have been getting rid of a lot of stuff and starting to craft like I did when I first started. I have been watching Dana for over a year and I absolutely love her.
I am loving the decluttering! ❤ 15 minutes working on my desktop & it looks amazing! Even got out the scrubber & gave it some cleaning love. 😆 Next up for me - the fabric stash. I tell ya, it's a little crazy in that area. Definitely gotta pare down & clear a home for my favorites. 😍 Thanks for setting up this collaboration Cara! 🥰 Cleaning up is really reminding me of all that I have & is getting me excited to craft again. 😁
This collaboration is a God send. I’ve been following Dana for about 3 years. So many times I’ve had questions, but knew with out her understanding junk journaling would not really get helpful answers. Cara you are amazingly brave to take this journey with Dana. Neither of you may ever know the extent of the ripple effect of this collaboration. God bless you both.💜🐞
Always tried to bribe myself using working on a project to be a reward for decluttering! That meant that the decluttering didn't happen and the project was in limbo. Wow! The mindset change that finishing a project is decluttering is huge. Thanks so much for this!
Perfect video, I was clearing my mop sink right before the video. Will post before and after 15 minutes after I run an errand. Just showed my husband how I would like to find it. Sink empty or almost empty. He leaves things soaking in there for daya.
Really appreciate all the helpful advice declutterring. I’m currently overwhelmed but pressing forward as I sit on the floor organizing my dies into categories 😬
Brilliant !! And whoa…decluttering the workspace😅…I currently work within a 6x6 square because the desk has a lot of stuff stuff on it 🫣…has tools and ink pads and other containers of trims…anyway the list goes on😂 great ah ha moment for sure 😮
Oh wow! I’ve done my floor and my desk! I also have little containers on a cart that I use while I work at my desk and make videos at the same desk! I loved Dana’s answer! My big question is when do we reorganize our stuff to be more efficient for us? Will that be a step? 😘 Trish
Use her next step of where would I look for this first. I also try to incorporate into that “where do I use it”. Currently doing my art studio. Whew I have a lot of stuff!
This is such a great collab! I have followed Dana, read her books, and put her principles into practice everywhere .... but the craft room? That's a whole new outlook.
Love this collab! Love DK! She’s helped me understand my clutter with her honesty, heart and helpful information on getting rid of clutter in the home. It’s great to see her process applied to crafting, a hobby that is a magnet for clutter! 😂
Wow! Dana, I have been combing your website and podcasts for this exact talk you just did! I have piles of 30-40 years worth of ufo's (unfinished objects) stashed all over my place and in storage, that I've been trying to figure out what to do with! At least two-thirds of them are things I actually would like to finish, but some of them will take months (we are talking at least 10-15 quilt tops in progress). This helps so much to have you acknowledge the problem! (I have been thinking that is an issue about not only the physical space these items take up, but also the emotional and mind and heart space they take up. For this issue, those are also containers. I really do want to finish so many of these!) I wonder if you could make this talk into a whole podcast or blog post, so i can listen to it over and over again!
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. I have worked all week working to have a better success rate on finishing my projects. Thanks for all of your help.
I love the guilt free approach to this series, thank you, is there a support group (lol) we can join and show our progress I am sharing in my facebook group I hope thats okay, it is such a wonderful system, I told my daughter I've been cleaning all wrong for the last 60 years (lol)
I have really liked the collaboration videos.. I am a crafter who is trying to get my craft room under control. Watching these videos has been very helpful. I would love to see more.
I'm trying to make some progress in my sewing space while listening. Often part of any time I want to sew I need to do some mending or something to get that clutter/procrasticlutter taken care of. Xx
Thanks Cara for sharing your craft room and declutterring! Since finding Dana I am working on my craft room one hour at a time too. Pleased with results! I’ll check out your channel❤
Ok, I’m on it! I love the idea behind defining the workspace. And, the understanding that it is for working, not storing.😂 this will be my very first task for the morning. Thanks for the motivation! Love and light ❤️🤗
Especially love the reminder that clearing WIP is part of the clearing. I have been doing that for the past couple of weeks but have been feeling I am taking the time away from sorting but am getting stuff done - AND having a container available to move all required materials for another project because part of my evolving system is to put WIP in a unique container (with all threads, fabrics, patterns/design notes...) and have them visible and prioritized rather than in containers with other projects. THANKS for the clarity.
Yesssss. That’s so cool as I have been on hold as I have so many preorganized unfinished projects that need homes. So finishing them and having them packaged and packed for my next craft sale. Is considered actually decluttering. Thanks for that.
I have been binge watching these videos, but this is as far as I’ve gotten so maybe my question will be answered in a video I haven’t watched yet, but I’m keeping with clearing off your workspace, what if I go to clear something off my workspace & the first place I would look for it is in a cabinet that I haven’t decluttered yet so it doesn’t fit? What often happens to me is I start decluttering one thing only to jump to another thing that has to be decluttered & it becomes a vicious cycle. Is that when I look in that cabinet & go through the steps so that I can store the thing in my hand in that cabinet? I think I just got it! So I answered my own question. 😂😂😂😂
So it can be on your desk or table but not in your actual "workspace". Like, I have a craft mat on my table and that's what I consider my workspace, so nothing can live on my craft mat but are okay on the table. Is that the correct understanding? Now I'm off to clear my floor 😬
@CaraBrandonCreations thanks! I love this challenge and think I may be able to achieve some progress using this process. Thanks so much for introducing us to it!
Well when I am working on a JJ I do put all the things I might need on desk. And it stays there until JJ is done. I don't put it away and then grab all the things until it is done. ?
I cleared off my workspace whilst watching your video. I don't have a lot of craft supplies/tools, however I do have materials I want to use up in the next couple of months, which IS decluttering 😃 Anne🦘au
😅 im sitting in my chair knitting...crocheting.....my husband: "honey what are you doing?"
Me: decluttering
LOL I didn't get exactly what you meant until the end of the video! True!!!
Yes, yarn projects take up more space than than journals, I think.😮😊
😂 perfect

Great advice once again many thanks ..Floor and Workspace NOT storage thank you bless you ..stay safe and warm.
I clean up after every project. It’s a way of starting with a clean slate.
Love this! Permission to work on an unfinished project in order to declutter! Have a very creative day!

Workspace is always an issue, haha. Of course it helps to create a space for what lives there. This is a weakness in my system, haha.
