Being a single mom of 4, I always had to cook big meals. But when there weren't enough leftovers for the entire family to eat the next day, I had a section of my deep freezer where I would put my homemade "TV dinners". Came in so handy when I was tired or just didn't feel like cooking. When asked, "what's for dinner?", I would just respond, "It's a fend for yourself night". The kids all knew that that meant to go get a dish from the freezer. I would even label what was in the container so that they wouldn't have to guess. Just grab the bowl, pop it in the microwave, and voila, a home-cooked meal. I did this for years, and my kids also do it with their own families now...
Every 3-4 days I make a leftover dinner for us. It's a little buffet of whatever wasn't eaten the few nights prior and I'll make a fresh salad to go along with it.
I am not a fan of cooking, and when my friends invite me over, they always tell me to bring my Tupperware. But one thing fo sho, I will not be throwing away any of it. It will be eaten. 😂😂
I'm a child of the "there are kids starving in Africa" syndrome. I keep and eat leftovers for up to two days. I do appreciate those comments that freeze their leftovers for a ready made meal for another time. Ummm...had never thought to do that but surely will!!
That's exactly it, except they were starving in China for us!😂 shi- has scared me into not throwing shi- out ever! But, my kids never heard this line, so they're just like "Naw...we good" I think they've just had it too good and their parents (us) weren't apart of wartimes and depressions like OUR parents were...maybe🤔
I’m glad you are going to start freezing things. Nobody wants to eat the same thing day after day, and the food is not at its best when it’s been sitting in the refrigerator for days.
When I cook, I cook as if I’m cooking for a family of 12, but I live alone. Then I portion it out and vacuum seal the meals. Then every morning I pick out the already cooked delicious home cooked meal I feel like I’d like to eat today. I usually have a fresh salad with my meal. Today I might have Lasagna and Fancy bread , tomorrow boneless skinless chicken breast, stuffing and corn, the next day Swedish meatballs, next day Turkey, peas, cranberry sauce and candied yams, Then pork chops, green beans, and mashed potatoes, next day beef stroganoff. There is such a wide variety of my home cooked meals. I’m older and have health problems but I never have to worry about that I’m often too sick to cook, there is always delicious cooked food that I can just heat up. Whether you have a lot of money or if you’re on a fixed income like me, food cost too much to waste.
I am struggling with this now. There’s only 2 people living in this house! I’m widowed, my son is off at college, and my daughter is a college student living at home. Why am I still cooking for a family of 10? Every time I throw out leftovers I just want to cry. Food is too expensive to throw away.
Leftover is how I survive during the winter and on lazy days. Almost everything can be frozen and I take full advantage of my freezer to house those delicious leftovers. I can eat Thanksgiving's meal every day after Thanksgiving until its gone. Thanksgiving is when the family cooks their ultimate best and I'm not throwing that away.
My sister she’s spoiled she forgot her roots. Talking about she feel like eating something different today. We still have lasagna from Sunday dinner. In the Tupperware.
Nah fam, this is why the freezer exists! It only takes a few mins to go from frozen to hot n ready to eat, without the fear of food going bad after a few days.
I’m a household of one. I have portion control pretty well handled so leftovers are either eaten, frozen, or both. Freezing batch cooking keeps my food costs down and also helps at times when I’m feeling too tired to cook. And leftover restaurant food comes home with me, always.
I love leftovers, that free meal when you don't feel like cooking or paying for food. My tip is keep the leftovers in the front for view and with a "eat by" date note on it🙂. Once it's pushed to the back it's game over.
I always take my restaurant leftovers home. I don’t even have to think about it. Between large servings and watching my weight, I made the habit many years ago of eating half and taking the other half home. So even if it’s not a large serving and I eat most of it, I still take the rest home.
Same! As long as there's any left, I'm gonna eat 'em. Even if it's been days and I'm tired of it, I'm still eating it. Because the alternative is cooking something else, and I usually don't feel like doing that 😂
I have learned to take those left overs n give them a twist. Example: left over spaghetti, not ready to eat it, put in the freezer. Pull it out on Saturday, add a little more sauce top with cheese, bake n fry, or buy some fried chicken with a salad or string beans with garlic bread. BAM! New meal!
Freeze it, then toss in 6 months. 😂 When my kids were growing up, I cooked for the week, once a week, usually a casserole, a stew or soup, and a big pot of beans. I made bread and bought tortillas. Their choice of what to have. I worked 12 hour night shifts, and if they didnt want that, there was peanut butter in the pantry.
I have some embarrassing things in my fridge, shameful. MUCH better though cause I had to do some clearing out prior to my family reunion last year, it helped me to stop procrastinating with it. Happy New Year to all, we made it to another year bless the Lord!
I control the portions and freeze leftovers. They're part of my meal planning. I won't enter a supermarket without a clear list of the 8 meals (two hot meals a day) I'm cooking for the week. The other days are designated leftover days. Monday's lunch is cooked on Sunday night and the leftovers from that will become Tuesday's dinner. Monday's dinner will be cooked on the day and likely become Wednesday's lunch for example. Tuesday's lunch will likely become Thursday's lunch etc. I don't waste or throw away food. And I don't cook daily, either. It's a waste of time and energy. We are not ruled by our stomachs in this house.
I live alone, but I've been known to get 3-4 meals out of some leftovers! Throw in a few more vegetables, add some rice or beans (or both), and there's a whole new meal.
My husband was a member of the “I don’t eat leftovers” club, and I’m a member of “there are starving kids in Africa” club. Baby, when he saw the cost of groceries in 22 & 23, he left that club. 😂 We portion out the food and a set will be for my lunch the next day, and the rest is in the freezer. Pre-heat the oven and pop that food a week or two later in the oven (not the microwave), and it tastes even better.
1st- I'm here for the pretty puff 👏🏾👏🏾 2nd- I'm Black so I have leftovers 90% of the time and I just bought new Tupperware! 😂 3- I throw leftovers away once I look in the fridge & I or husband can't recall "when did we make this ?" smh 🙄
Monday night’s dinner is Tuesday’s lunch, and if there is any left after that it’s going in the freezer. Not only does food cost too much to throw out, but I’ve invested my time into preparing that meal so somebody is going to eat it.
2:31 Wow. My big back has never done that before (deny a to-go box). Like I never realized "no" was an option. That's wild. That's because I KNOW I will want it later. I'll even call it a "late night snack".
Its just me and my son he's 19 yrs old and right now I have two pork chops and a Lil bit of Mac n cheese from last night dinner .I have rice from Saturday dinner and I have four cubed steak cooking in the crock pot as we speak along with some frozen veggies. Those items will make a nice meal how ever we choose to pair it 😂😂 plus i also bring my leftovers to work and give it to an older co worker who lives alone and doesn't cook so I definitely believe in leftovers and repurpose 😂😂
I now look at the leftover situation before I even consider taking anything out. If there are enough random leftovers for everyone or the kids, then I don't cook 🎉
That wanting your leftover restaurant food is real... especially when you practicing weight loss thinking... eat half of your meal, leave the rest... although I've rarely done that😂
I don’t see how folks DONT like leftovers. Chile, the food doesn’t really taste good until the next day, where the seasoning has had a whole extra day to marinate. But that’s just me 🤷🏽♀️
I perfect portions and don’t throw food out. I can’t stand wasted food. Growing up we had one meal a day… my father never worked, he took all the government money and was abusive. My mother taught me how to budget and stretch a dollar when she was here. If something goes bad, it bothers me. This is why I want a French door refrigerator so I can see stuff and a bottom freezer. Those regular degular fridges and side by side, food gets lost in there. If I don’t get around to it, I freeze it. But 98% of the time no food is wasted. I eat everything especially with inflation now.
My kids have been gone for years and I still haven’t learned portion control. I’m starting this year. Cause food to dog gone expensive to be throwing away😊
It’s hard sis. I’m not anti-leftover, but I have a limit on the number of days I can spin the block on em. I max out at about 3 days, but 2 is average. We compost though so that makes it OK, right?!? 🤷🏾♂️
I have a friend who used to work at a Supermarket that sold food and she told me that they reheated food. I was so shocked I clutched my pearls that I did not have. The same way people could eat they reheated food and feel it was fresh I could eat "mines."
This is so true! I’m learning from my mom to freeze leftovers and eat them later. Or I guess you could keep them in the fridge and make a different meal later. (Sometimes I get bored eating the same meal multiple times.)
We’re a family of six so I meal plan then prep on Sundays. I prep the kids lunches for the week and all leftovers are lunches for hubby and I the next day. I do freeze individual meals and prep breakfasts that can also be frozen for the future. But we try to avoid wasting food. Hard to see money going down the drain.
Not my family mine are fine with leftovers. And we'll skip a day go back to it and add something to it to make a third meal, we don't waste food especially home cooked food!

My mom didn't know how to cook small meals either... spaghetti was for the week. My ADHD self has finally been more systematic about it in order to prevent my family from getting food poisoning and for my sanity. Here is my system: I cook dinner every other day, and we eat the leftovers on the days in between. I HAVE to label leftovers with the date (too many pass sicknesses). Really good leftovers like baked Mac n cheese are portioned out to single servings and frozen before day 3. If I see 4 days old+ leftovers in the refrigerator, then I gotta throw it out. Toddlers say, "We eating this again?"...but the older kids already know what to expect, lol. I ALWAYS get a to-go box when eating out too... I feel like my college years definitely made me want to waste less food and eat out less.
Leftovers taste better because the seasonings has settled into the food.

This is hilarious! My daughter just said thee same thing about her leftovers. Hill-Air-Eeh-Us!
I wanna be in Atlanta! But I'm all the way on the other side. Boo. I love your content.
And by Tupperware, you mean... (Country Crock Cool Whip...)
