    I hate that many conductors are not open to the idea of french horn doing jazz which is awful cause a french horn can be an amazing jazz instrument, im a hornist myself and i plan on doing jazz at my school soo woo

      Same, I'm in jazz band, but because it's not a standard instrument in jazz, my director doesn't give us an option to play it, although I've talked to some of my jazz buddies about maybe going out and doing our own thing, where we could call the shots and do whatever our hearts content. I've already called jazz horn if we go through it.

      one reason is that the french horn is very difficult yet amazing.

      The horn is being implemented into more bands nowadays. Just like how trumpets can double on flugelhorn and saxophones can double on clarinet or flute, some bands I've seen make trombones double on french horn.

      It's funny, because it has that mellow sound that other brass jazz instruments have to constantly use cups and tune for.

    That is a Hans Hoyer compensating triple Horn, generously loaned to me by a colleague. I really enjoyed that Horn but it was VERY different from the Paxman descant that I played for the majority of my career.

    I really don;t get why the horn isn't more prevalent in jazz. Its sound flows out smooth and gentle like honey and its lower range is so mellow and deep.

    I go to an arts high school in las vegas, and I'm the jazz horn player there. I am so thankful for having an open minded director when it comes to having non-traditional instruments incorporated into the jazz world...Jazz is my first love over classical, and because of those close minded people out there, I'm going to have to major strictly in classical for college next year because jazz is MUCH more risky for a horn player. :( I'm double majoring in jazz compos. to revolutionize the jazz world.

    Are you familiar with a French Horn player named Rick Todd. Rick was a protigy of Vince De Rosa at USC in the late 1970's and in addition to being a classical soloist, he plays studio work and plays jazz horn. He taught at USC but now I believe he is teaching in Miami.

    I have heard that the french horn is a very complicated instruments to understand regarding its overtone structure, what's possible to play and what isn't. What is your opinion on that? I mean you are really, really great at the french horn. Well done. Can you tell me, why the french horn is not part of the big band or why the trumpets and trombones are more common in jazz? Thank you. Sorry about the weird questions but I am just wondering. Thank you :)

    • @MarkTaylorMusic
      @MarkTaylorMusic  9 років тому +29

      Andreas Hoppe Not weird questions at all. As you go up the harmonic series, the notes available get closer together. The Horn is a fairly long tube (longer than a trombone, actually) so we're always playing up higher in the harmonic series. Since there are more "targets" to hit, the chance of missing notes goes way up! That said, every instrument has it's challenges, right? The Horn is not very common in jazz because back when jazz was very young (beginning of the 20th century) the Horn was considered an "orchestra" instrument and not a "band" instrument. The standard jazz instrumentation developed out of the various types of bands that used to entertain people in those days

    I am a music enthusiast with a back ground in brass from early year and I come across a trumpet & French horn in thrift stores and I really have a liking for both they have been repaired and wow they are great instruments, however I have a dilemma one fella says you can’t do both but I can play a few scales on both
    Instructors so is there a “ Thou shall not”? I am retired and in school to play both! Any pointers will be deeply appreciated.

    • @MarkTaylorMusic
      @MarkTaylorMusic  3 роки тому

      Hi Wendal! I haven't been using my UA-cam channel for a while, so I missed your comment. I know a few people who double quite well on Horn and trumpet. It IS harder than it seems, but I'm sure you can make it work. Just make sure to keep working your Horn low register so that trumpet doesn't make your sound hard or brittle. Listen a LOT and know what you want each instrument to sound like. Good luck!

      +Rori The Master Wow, that's an interesting question. I guess if you're learning it for fun (rather than as a new career path) then the best bet is to get your hands on one and experiment. Figure out how to play tunes you like and go from there. Get a good middle of the road mouthpiece like a Holton Farkas MDC and a beginning horn book with a fingering chart and dive in! Be warned, it is possible to hit a lot of different notes on the same fingering and it can take some patience to develop the ability to pick out the right one with some consistency.

    +MarkTaylor So I've been playin horn for about 7 years (middle School/High school) and I want to start playing trumpet. Would it mess up my horn embouchure if I add trumpet to my practice sessions? As in practice an hour of trumpet then an hour of horn? Thanks

    • @MarkTaylorMusic
      @MarkTaylorMusic  9 років тому

      HORN MAESTRO I know a few people who play both trumpet and Horn. Lis Rubard (www.lisrubard.com/) was a Hornist first and then added trumpet later. In addition to her work with indie folk band The Loom, Lis also plays in new music and traditional orchestral projects here in NYC. Jeff Stockham (jeffstockham.com/Jeff_Stockham_-_Trumpet_-_French_Horn/Home.html) plays Horn, trumpet/cornet and Civil War era brass. He does a lot of freelancing and jazz work in upstate New York. Several years ago, I was beginning to work on doubling on trumpet and may get back to it at some point. I don't know how developed your Horn playing is, so I can't really tell you how to go about adding trumpet. MOST Horn players will tell you that playing trumpet will ruin your Horn playing, though. I would make sure you're VERY solid on one instrument before trying to add another, but that's just my opinion.

    • @PuertoricanPatriot1
      @PuertoricanPatriot1 9 років тому

      +HORN MAESTRO I personally have been playing both for 7 years now and i can say that yeah it might mess you up sometimes.For a while my horn tone sounded like a trumpet (not good). Just make sure you have a a determined practice schedule and keep the 2 instruments seperate. It's worth it in everywhere to learn both though. Best of luck
