This is my all-time favourite Tchaikovsky symphony, especially I like the opening of the second movement best of all ,when the strings come in before the woodwind enters, and reminds me the view of winter`s night in the Russian countryside, and it`s absolutely well performed.
As I'm listening to this, I'm reading the score's notation through a book I've borrowed from the library and what Tchaikovsky does to make his music is simply astounding. Good work, Russia, you gave us a masterpiece of a composer!
The name of this movt: "The Gloomy Land, the Foggy Land" - means Valaam island at the Ladoga lake. Tchaikovsky had visited it before he arrived in Moscow to be a professor of the Conservatoire..
i'm playing in this soon! our conductor says that 8:25 is the mean old landlord arriving in the field and saying to all the poor russian peasants 'stop singing those beautiful tunes and get back to work, and freeze to death'. sad but awesome to be able to put it into music

4:50-6:00 just made me cry... no words
10:39 - 10:40 Some contra bassist is a bar short...
