It's impossible not to feel for Tatum .. how her tumultuous childhood impacted her adult life and the deeply complex relationahip with her Father. Despite all , she is still thankfully here continuing to navigate her trauma . She is a courageous, inspiring admirable beautuful woman -- and clearly inately talented .
That’s the problem. She was too mature. I know a lot about this situation but i’ll just say that Paper Moon was in a way more of a curse then a blessing . Her Dad wanted to give her a creative outlet while at the same time giving her a chance to bond with her father. He couldn’t have known that she would blow up and become super famous overnight and what that would do to her. People always crap on Ryan but he worked with her on that movie and it took an extreme amount of patience on Ryan and Peter’s part. She makes it looks so easy but what you don’t see is she was just a little kid so she never remembered her lines.Ryan had to stay up with her, night after night painstakingly coaching her and he really deserves credit for that. He was just as good as she was but he had kind of a bad rep as a playboy in Hollywood so the academy didn’t give him credit. Was he jealous? Yeah probably. But I 100% think he was more frustrated then anything because now all the sudden he has a 10 year old daughter who has everyone kissing her a$$ like a bunch of fools making her believe she was more important then other people. Constantly telling her “yes” and giving her allowances no kid should have. So Ryan’s plan of reigning in his already rebellious daughter and trying to protect her completely blew up in his face. He was proud at first but that pride turned into “Oh no what have I done?” Pretty quickly.

On Larry King Tatum O'Neal said her Dad punched her in the face when she got nominated for her role in Papermoon. When Larry King asked her why He did that she partially blamed herself saying she was being a smart ass about her Dad not getting nominated . She says she never wanted to leave and had to be dragged from Cher's house. Of course, then Ryan would beat the sheet out of her when she got home.
Joanna lost custody of Tatum and Griffin when she was 6 years old. Ryan took them and put them both in a boarding school but Tatum didn't like it. Griffin did really well. Then they went to live with Ryan in Malibu. Then Farrah came along. She didn't want to marry Ryan and he left the kids at the beach house to spend time with her at the house that her and Lee Majors built. She had a racquetball court and Ryan loved to play around.
True story: I met Tatum a long time ago. She admitted that at this time in her life she was surrounded by men. Her two brothers and her Dad and her Mom wasn’t there because she had a debilitating addiction and so the poor woman lost custody. Tatum longed for a woman in her life. And Cher felt sorry for her so she let her come over and have sleepovers. The problem was Tatum didn’t get the memo that this was temporary and so she moved her stuff in. At this point her Demeanor changed and the sweet little girl was now kind of an entitled brat. Cher finally had enough and in the end and had to have people physically remove her from the house and go back to Ryans. I understand she had a tough childhood with her parents, but she also had a very privileged almost idyllic childhood too after she moved in with her Dad. She never had any shortage of famous boyfriends, or famous/normal friends. Her best friend was Stanley Kubricks daughter and her boyfriend was Micheal Jackson along with others and between movies she actually did have normal childhood experiences both before and after. Paper Moon She went to school with Jody Foster but also normal kids including a friend of mine were mixed in there too. She also went to a boarding school for awhile. Very exclusive. They had everything you could want. Horses, swimming, tennis, you name it. Her brother loved it but she rebelled. She started to rebel on movie sets too. In the movie “Little Darlings” the director had to halt filming because Tatum had become a problem. He called Ryan who was overseas who stopped what he was doing and flew in to talk to Tatum. After that she was fine but the damage was done and her Hollywood nickname became “Tantrum O’Neal”…I actually think doing “Paper Moon” did more harm then good because she peaked at that age which made her grow up overnight. Ryan is always said to be this horrible absentee father but he took Tatum with him everywhere and he had to raise her and Griffin on his own which was no easy feat especially after she won the Oscar. It went to her head. Also i never understood why when a loving, open, warm mother figure (Farrah) entered her life Tatum was cruel, mean and cold to her. I get she was jealous but it was her father, not her boyfriend. That’s what started the big estrangement: Farrah. Tatum then up and left LA to marry John McEnroe which was a normal thing to do although they were toxic from the jump and she lost custody because her daughter walked in on her shooting up. I guess my point is things aren’t always so black and white and there is always an underbelly to these books, interviews, etc. It wasn’t all doom and gloom and she wasn’t always “the victim” …that said she’s still a very lovable person and my ❤ aches when I hear she relapses. I have so much compassion for that because I went down that same lonely road and I still struggle with it so it hits close to home. I’m glad for her she has her kids because I think that’s the ONE thing that has kept her alive. I wish her the best ❤
