- There was a time not too long ago that any cars built past the classic muscle car era were not very desirable. In the last 8 - 10 years the next generation of collectible cars unofficially known as "Malaise Era" have really caught on with a growing group of collectors. Whether it is due to nostalgia or just the cool factor, we don't know but we do have our favorites. Watch this feature and see if you agree with our picks. I turned 16 in 1978 and other than trucks and SUVs no new cars excited me then. I loved the “old” musclecars from 8-10 years earlier. Which seemed like an eternity to a 16 year old!
I’ve only recently started finding cars that were new in my teens interesting. I bought a Magnum with T Tops a couple years back, and it’s a comfortable and unusual change from the somewhat crude driving muscle cars in my garage!

I remember these cars fondly. I'm not sure if I would want to own any of them today. The one exception from this era would be the 1986 Mustang SVO with the 2.3 L turbo 4-cyl. I had the opportunity to buy one in 2017 but I regretably passed on it.

Great list. My pick would be a 1978 Dodge Little Red Express. I can't remember ever owning a "Malaise Era" car, all of my cars/trucks are 1971 or older or 1990 up.

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk Thanks, 78 Little Red Exparss is better than the 79, the 79 has Cat's so there is a drop in power and mileage plus the 78 has a better looking grill. Thanks again to "If This Car Could Talk."
My malaise era hot rod is a 1973 Buick Century Stage one with 4 speed. I paid $800 for it in good running condition in 1995
Had a couple of those. I actually owned three 79 Camaro Z28s. Two Manuel's, and one automatic. One of the four speeds had t tops as well.
My Dad had the 10th anniversary 79 pace car, 79 Trans Am.
As far as my favorites, 71 to 74 Javelin Amx. My friends Dad owned an AMC Jeep Dealership in the seventies in SE Detroit.
I also love the 77 SE Y82 W72 Pontiac Trans Am. I had a silver 4spd 77 TA. I also loved the Y88 W72 78 SE Trans Am. I had a 78 Gold Trans Am, but it wasn't a W72 SE.
Great video. Another favorite was the 77 Can Am with the t/a 6.6 on the hood scoop.

I came of age at the start of the Malaise era and remember all these cars well. The 73-74 Trans Am SD 455 should be at the top of this list. Also missing are the Corvette Stingray of 73-74 with the 454 big block; the Buick Grand National and GNX; and the Pontiac Grand Am of 73-75. Nothing pre-73 should be on this list as the Malaise era started in 73.
I think your list is spot on. It was not a good time for the automotive industry. Federal regulations, imports, quality issues, domestic targets (money) all led to an era that was not good. However, the manufacturers did, or tried to keep the interest by graphics and the feeling you were powerful and going fast, even though you were being choked! Now these vehicles are gaining traction, interest and value because of all of the negatives! As well as nostalgia! The very definition of Malaise is essentially “ill”. It certainly was!!
Not any more!! However, I believe the auto industry is on the precipice of very similar conditions for both similar and differing reasons.

Looking back I would say Olds and its Cutlass/442 kept a fire burning and the Mustang LX 5.0 was very attainable at 15 grand. When you look at today's crazy h.p. ratings, the malaise era really were the horrible dark ages - may it never return.

anything made in 70 71 72 is not malaise era, to me the malaise era was not until 1975 when cars got catalytic converters.
correct- the cats ruined performance for quite awhile - my '72 Charger was a beast & doesn't belong on this list
Point taken but some high-altitude cars and California cars from those early 70's did have more emissions equipment than cars destined for other parts of the country. Some were included on this list more due to their styling than engine performance.
Glad you are enjoying your Charger. They sure can be better performers especially with a little "shade tree mechanic" work!
