You did a video not too long ago about the Wagos and I was very impressed by them. I hate the wire nuts and started using something similar to the Wagos, but it did not have the levers, so you had to push the wire into it which made it impossible to do stranded wire. The Wagos are just genius, and now you’ve show a couple more reasons why. Thank you 😊
Wago makes a push in one for solid wire (you can twist them of) also they make these with tabs for stranded.
@@sparkyman4155 yes and the WAGOS for solid wires are almost as cheap as wirenuts. The 221 is quite expensive and the solid wagos are 2273
Do you also use the stab connector on the back of receptacles?
@@Catalyph we don't have those here in Europe
@@sparkyman4155 I'm in the UK and I use them.
I pay attention when you post. I really appreciate your content. I learned a lot from just watching and helping my dad. I have my own house now and since he's passed you are helping me out. Thank you.
Wago! My uncle works for them, awesome hardware 👌 Really love using them on old houses where wires are either really short, stiff, or the insulation is brittle.
I started using these connectors ever since watching your original video. Awesome recommendation!!!
Cut the solid wire tip at a slight angle with lineman pliers or wire strippers and it will be pointed at the end. This allows the solid wire to slide into the back of the wire nut and become tight when you twist.
Love these things and been using them for a little over a year. Didn't even know about the guage on the side. Thanks.
Where have these things been all my life! Love these already
Incredible...Fast & Easy, definitely a must have for my Electrical Tool Box. Thanks 😊
The 1st option is fine, but you want to wrap the electrical tape in the direction that you tighten the wire-nut.
Otherwise your wrapping of the wire-nut with the electrical tape can loosen the wire-nut and that's not great.
Make one suggestion if I may. At 1:10 , wrap the tape clockwise instead, so it is still going in the direction of tightening the nut as you tape. Doing this counterclockwise way, can losen up your nut slightly if you're not careful.
That is a great suggestion, very good idea!
another reason not to use wire nuts.
@@SupremeRuleroftheWorld yeah they're great for non stranded, but I definitely am about to buy some of these little tools. You can't really wrap tape in small junction boxes effectively hardly ever. And I always have that feeling like I didnt get it just right when I'm pushing it all back in the box. Just not a great way to do things for any stranded wire project.
For solid to stranded connections with wire nut, always leave stranded wire 1/8th of an inch longer. Hold them parallel then just twist the wire nut on. Twisting the stranded around the solid will cause failure at least 60 percent of the time. Always tug test the joint to ensure a proper connection has been made.
The 221s are life changing. Once installed, you can even change out switches and outlets without shutting off the power. The 221 is, itself, like an outlet; I just do everything I need then “plug in” the black last. Done and done. Love them. Hot swapped a switch the other day in less than 2 minutes.
I've use Wagos when wiring up 3 phase motors at work and I love them. Can never find them in the store though so regular wire nuts are still my unfortunate standard.
wagos have been used for a long time in Belgium and Europe. I myself study electricity and have never encountered a defective wago.
My other video created a lot of anger with US electricians. ua-cam.com/video/rMlI7qOm8hM/v-deo.html Over 1000 times I have replied to folks looking for a failed true Wago connector. To this day no one has been able to produce one or even share a pic of one. I am nearby to the US NFPA which regulates our electric code. If I ever get one I will bring it by to see what they think, but i am not sure it will ever happen!
@@SilverCymbal yes, i've seen that video. if I remember correctly the only wago I saw broken was a counterfeit .
Great information thank you 👍
when you have to deal with connecting stranded to solid wire there's another option. You can tin the stranded wire with solder, and it basically becomes a solid wire. Now you can use a standard wire nut without everything shredding inside the wire nut.
I love the wagos! Just used a couple to connect a new radiator fan to the car.
Crimp and shrink wrap for auto connections.
Wago For life! Best thing ever
So I had to replace a zwave switch in a three gang box. So I decided to order some wagos. I thought I only needed the 2 or 3’s but got a small assortment up to the five.
I had forgotten the hellish wiring job, I used the fives! Not sure how this house passed inspection with one wire nut was holding seven neutrals!
So the wago really cleaned it up, wirenuts take a lot of space and smart switches do also.
Now that I’ve seen them myself, I can tell they’re a nice sturdy option. Will use from now on.
in europe there are only this type of wago connectors. Wire nuts are not good enouth for the legislater here
Can we all take a moment to appreciate the work this man is doing to educate and entertain us. Man thank you very much 😃.
Very kind of you to say, thank you for watching my videos
@@SilverCymbal yes of course man your earn it.
very helpful!!!!!
Can a lever accidentally open? I'm wondering whether it would be wise to run a piece of electrical tape once around the Wago when done, to ensure the levers stay down.
Some people do that and think the levers open on their own. When they are closed they are kind of in a neutral position so they can flap a little, but 100% the wire is still locked in. You have to life them all the way, and it takes much more force than you think. I have never had one open, you would know if that lever was opening, it feels like it takes a couple of pounds of force to me to open them.
Should of watch this yesterday. I had a led light I installed that came with those nifty connectors. Ended up cutting it and using wire nut smh.
I’ve been using these connectors for years. They really are the best method for connecting any wires I’ve ever seen.
P.S. what is the brand name of the multimeter that you are using?
That is a really fun one I have bee trying, the screen is amazing. So far so good with it: amzn.to/35xJgeN They have an extra $5 off if you click the coupon box next to it. I really should do a review, for $41 it's unbeatable.
Love the Wagos!
I got some coupling style on Amazon. Name brand didn't have it. I used them on a USB cable I wanted to be able replace the end of it because it wears out fast, but the other (not wearing out) end of it is hard to replace.
Hello Silver Cymbal,
I'm really impressed of the video that you made. I just bought the Ecoflow Delta 1300. Could you please make a video to show the Delta 1300 works with gas furnace 96% Goodman 120k BTU gas furnace GMBC961205DN and sump pump 92341 1/3 HP simultanously?
Thank you so much
Thank you so much
Yeah, when doing vinyl ceilings and taking down/putting back up ceiling fans. I've always just electric taped around them. Often solid wire to braided wire in those situations around here.
Thanks for making a video that isn't a about generators!!
No problem, winter is quickly coming to an end. If you watch my outdoor stuff I have a lot of outdoor projects that will be starting up soon too.
The only problem with wago is that they aren't always available at the hardware store and are significantly more expensive than wire nuts.
The price doesn't bother me personally but it certainly drives away the average Joe. I really wish these were more popular in the USA because they seem safer and more foolproof than wire nuts
Cost is key.
When I can get 100 wire nuts for the cost of 5 wago connectors...it's a simple choice.
reality in todays climate is that the bottom line will drive your purchase regardless of how much superior another product
will be. It's why we all drive Chevy's and Toyotas and not Ferrari's and Bugatti's
@@colfrankslade Cost is not key when it’s for your own home. I’ve had wires come undone with the wire nuts, it’s not worth it when the Wago’s are so much better. I literally sleep better knowing I used the Wago instead of wire nuts now.
Well, there is a simple solution to making them more popular: make them cheaper.
Easier said than done.
@@orppranator5230 if only...
@@strongisland7015 We just moved into a recently renovated home that had "professional" work done recently. As I've gone through doing a few repairs myself, I am far too frequently finding wire nuts falling off.
I've done a small amount of electrical work and never had wire nuts be this much a problem, BUT after seeing the other video about Wagos, I purchased a kit of both the lever-lock and the push-in connectors. You hit the nail on the head here because I will absolutely continue using them regardless of the added cost and slowly replace any appropriate connection I come across if for no other reason than the fact that I can easily see at a glance whether my wires are properly in the connector. That added peace of mind is worth the price to me.
I've always wondered how good these were.
Is wago good for ground solid copper to stranded copper wire?
I've read in other videos that stranded is not recommended in wagos. What are your thoughts/ experiences with stranded in wagos?
Silver Cymbal, can I ask what do you do for a living? I like watching your channel. Thank you.
Wagos do have their place, but wire nuts aren't going anywhere. Wagos are easier to use but because the copper wires aren't directly touching one another, that means increase resistance, efficiency lost through heat. A wago will always be far warmer than a wire nut itself. In a world where energy effiecny is the key, its something to consider.
No, hell no. I'm literally watching this video because the wire nuts with electric tape came loose. So screw wire nuts. I literally toss those them in the trash when I see them.
It really is the only way to go !
in the same way as using tape could you cable tie the 2 wires together?
Thanks for the videos… fantastic! Question: do you ever consider ferrules on stranded wires before inserting in the wago or is it not necessary?
Thank you very much. I absolutely love ferrules for any kind of screw down terminal. But for Wagos they should not be used at least not for this size, others may have good info or maybe I am wrong on this point.
@@SilverCymbal ferrules do nothing in this connector. wago will have tested it, if it was better they would have recommended it.
I used ferrules on 14 and 18-gauge strand in connectors similar to a Wago, for 12-Volt wiring. Worked well, especially for 18-guage. The ferrule holds the strands securely, and the connector slightly pinches the ferrule. I tested a few prior to use and they didn't pull apart any easier than a butt splice. It works really well when joining wires of different gauges.
12-guage is too large with the additional size of the ferrule, but I can push 12-gauge into the connector without spreading the strands. I couldn't with 14-gauge. The connectors don't have the lever the Wago has.
I've bounced my trailer down many a mile of unpaved Forest Service roads and hundreds of miles of paved roads. So far, no failed connections.
Hi I've been watching your videos for a couple years now I just purchased 40 acres in New Jersey with no electric, water, or any power at all could you set me up Of what I might need to live there For 2 weeks in the Winter and 2 weeks in the summer I'm looking to have Portable power for lights and heat.. Thanks
If I have to connect a solid wire to a stranded wire (like in most "smart" switches), I always twist and solder them, then use a wire nut to cover it.
What grass do you have in your back yard?
Wago 221... how much current can it handle??
I'm connecting an RV water heater.
What about the ideal brand ? Are those as good?
I am a maintenance tech for a large banking firm. Every time and I mean every time that a printer has lost power or an office cubicle and lately a water cooler stopped cooling it has always been a " wago, wedgie or whatever name you choose but in my opinion, you couldn't pay me to use them !!!! One outlet on a three outlet run went bad - pulled the outlet and the bare copper neutral is setting there staring at me. I went to the other two outlets - more wagos - cut them all out, stripped the wire and installed "GB" brand wire nuts ! I think that someone on UL was on vacation when these were approved for use. These wagos, etc are on the same level as " back wired " outlets and "federal Pacific" breaker boxes !!! With all the more that makes contact with the wire when the wire is slid in, how can anyone say that a wago can handle the wattage of a full load ???? Can someone honestly tell me that a wago has as much connectivity as a wirenut ??? I wouldn't be caught dead using a wago nor any of it's counterparts !!! I have seen too much failure !!!
What is the contact area of the Wago?
Regardless, the physical force of a wire nut twisted onto the the wire, plus that force pressing those two or three wires against each other must be 5, 10 times or more, than the Wago who's connection is easily made by gently pushing the lever closed.
It may be fast and sexy, but....
Do they make them waterproof?
Oh great, last time you told people about WAGO, Amazon sold out. I hope they stocked up this time LOL
Thanks for the video!
Where can I get Wago wire connectors aside from Amazon? I can't seem to find a good place aside from Amazon. Sorry, but I just don't trust things like that from the zon; I've been burned, thankfully not literally, too many times before in getting what I think is authentic and I double checked to make sure it is but turns out to be knock off stuff.
It looks like Home Depot and Lowes have the "Ideal" brand that are similar but a little different (push on and no lever) and are made in the USA, so I think I'll try those!

I liked your video.

Obviously a Wago promotional video, but it would fit my need if I can justify the cost. I see these are the 221 series. Is that relevant? If so, how?
QUESTION CAN I CONNECT THEM TOGETHER USING SOLDERING IRON? THE SOLID AND THE STRANDED ELECTRIC WIRE? :)
I'm changing out old smoke detector in doublewide trailer and I'm trying to figure out tight I should put the wire nuts back on
Tight enough that you cant rip the the wires out with your hands with moderate/full strength.
what about resistanse of that connector?
With the Wago clamps, is it recommended to twist the stranded wire prior to insertion or just insert it as stripped?
Thats a good question. I never have and I haven't ever seen them show that in their videos but others may comment in with different info
@@SilverCymbal I always twist stranded for any use. If you don’t it’s easy to have an errant strand end up outside your target.
@@SilverCymbal Hey I like these wago connections but since it is not wire to wire I have heard that they can heat up. Is this system safe for kitchen and bathroom lighting?? I am not an electrician and a potential fire is always a concern for me. Especially if it is in a wall or ceiling where it can't be seen.
The only downside to wago is they have a higher resistance than a properly done wire nut, because of the lower surface area
Theoretically, sort of. Not sure if you saw my video where I compared them to a wirenut at 3X their rated load. Pretty good stuff! ua-cam.com/video/B1pmuRsf1co/v-deo.html
Wrap the electrical tape the same direction you screw your wirenuts.
Ok, I’m finally sold on wagos now
Does the current capability equal that of the wire nuts? Seems like only a very small portion of the connector is contacting the actual wire. And therefore it may not allow the full current capability as a wire nut. Same with the push in connections on the back or switches and receptacles. Bad idea! Those push in type connections only have a thin piece of metal making the connection and they burn and break connections all the time. I know, I had to replace near about every push in type switch and receptacle in a older house to get everything up and working properly again. Never use push in type house connections. Use the screw type connections...
Check out this video where I did my own tests ua-cam.com/video/B1pmuRsf1co/v-deo.html but the short answer is they are rated for 20amps and tested officially at that and will do that job without issues

@@SilverCymbal yes please ! Even though I know how to use one, always takes me a few mins to remember 🤪
Just use a butt end connector...DUH! OH and I use needle nose vice grips on them, not a crimper. Reason? I can control the force with the adujster at the end of the needle nose vice grips. Anyway, have a nice day.
They also take up less space than wire nuts.
Great point, there are superb when you have the against the sides of back of the boxes since they are so slim.
Do you have shares in wago? You’ve sold me on it! :)
I wish I did! If you came to my house you will see I use these everywhere. The only people that don't like them are ones that haven't used them or confuse them with cheap copies. Wago still has a patent, and until that runs out they will be the only one that uses the special clamp inside that doesn't fail like cheap copies.
Tape wire before using wire nut to avoid slippage. If you do tape wire nut wrap in the correct direction. Lot of wirds here
Actually the only correct way of connecting solid core wire to stranded wire is to strip about 2cm of the solid wire and bend the stripped section in the middle by 90° then get the stranded wire and strip 2x as much(4cm), spin it around the solid wire about 4-5 times then Fully close(pinch with pliers) the 90° bend of the solid copper, by doing so you "crimp" the solid wire to the stranded one making for a very strong permanent connection .
Or be a man and solder them.
DIYer here, didn't know about these little items, but I also have an older home with stiff, multiple copper wires coming in and I'm trying to connect up an LED fixture with stranded. I don't think the copper bunch is likely to fit into a wago though I am considering picking a pack up next trip to the store - in case I have another situation where I CAN use them. HATE trying to firmly connect stranded to copper. Going to wrap it with electrical tape this time. Appreciate the video, as well as the comments here!
Hi Bro, It’s pronounced Vah-Go, technically. I know, dumb but had to call their tech support and was corrected by them. :)
Are they waterproof?
By themselves no, they have a thing called a gelbox that these go into and makes them waterrpoof. But for some dumb reason they dont sell that in the US, only Europe. Until then I use these if I am outdoor or ficing underground low voltage stuff. I used these on a sprinkler line I hit a few years back with great success. ua-cam.com/video/NZtwD_F7lTA/v-deo.html

These particular connectors are nice but, they are not insulated or should I say sealed for outdoor use.

Or just twist the end of the stranded wire and tin it with solder...
If you do use wire nuts on stranded they should be interlaced and twisted first.
or, hear me out. you just use wagos.
Problem with Wagos is you can’t fit anything larger than a 10. Got some 6 awg wire I need to connect, these won’t do.
Bit late to the party but there are wagos available for 6gauge. Why you wouldn't just use a lug or insulated connector instead would be beyond me
If you’re gonna use electrical tape to hold the wire but to the wire, skip the wire nut and just go nuts ok electrical tape
First comment!
I used marettes for years. No trouble and don't costs nothing
Im horrified by the wirenut with tape method. WHY would you do that. It hurts me just looking at it.
I personally would never do that method. But some in the US can't give up on them, so that's the best it can get. I use Wagos for connections like that.
Or you could tin the stranded wire with a soldering iron. Then it will not fray and also works much better on screw terminals.
Who is Silver Cymbal? Out of nowhere and an overnight trillionaire. Or something like that.
Not sure about the nowhere part, this is my 350th video. As far as those trillions let me know where to pick up the money!

The electrical tape on wire nuts is garbage. No self respecting electrician would tape up wire nuts, they would use good quality wire nuts instead and make quality connections.
