The "button" controlled medication is regulated by a pump, the machine is pre set to only give a certain amount of medication in a certain amount of time. So say its set at for ex, 10ml in 1 hour and the machine gives you shots of 5ml a shot (each time you press the button.) If you press the button more then twice in an hour the pump wont give you more then the 10ml per hour. The pumps memory will just register how many times you pressed the button but wont administer more medication.

I am a graduate nurse, fixing to take boards, feel free to message me any questions and I'll do my best. :) Yes, epidurals make it so you can't get up because you might fall over while attempting to move. They will insert what's called a foley catheter in your bladder during this time, it is removed before pushing. Epidurals given at the wrong time (too early) do lengthen and slow down labor. Also, they don't always work correctly. Just know your options and do what's best for you. :)

one positive thing about the epidural is that just incase there is a problem and they need to do a quick c-section...you already have the epidural in and have a urinary catheter inserted ( thing that empties your bladder) so you are saving time in the long run if such a thing would occur.

good idea on holding off on the epidural as long as you can! my nurse said every cm that you wait is another hour of labor (roughly) so if you get the epi at 3cm vs 5 cm that can add two hours on to labor. i also recommend waiting as long as you can to go into the hospital. i would love to see a baby shower haul!!

absolute relief. I could feel what was happening but the pain was gone, it was wonderful. I was able to sit back and relax, I was even able to sleep for a few hours while I continued to dilate, it was amazing. You need to know that the epidural comes after a long long wait so not being able to move around isn't so bad, you generally have it e few hours before actually pushing. If it's well done you can feel the need to push but no pain. Also being able to dose it yourself is great, they used to

The games show button thing that you were talking about is called a PCEA pump or a patient controlled epidural analgesia. Even though it is patient controlled, the machine that it is connected to is programmed by the nurse or doctor to make sure that you dont overdose, so it only lets out the amount of the analgesia that is allotted for that time . It's totally safe for you! I'm a nursing student, so I hope that helps!

The button for the epidural medication is on a limit, no matter how much you press it, it will only deliver a certain amount of medication at certain times.
It defintely didnt take 20 minutes with my second-it took a while with my first but with my second it was over before I even knew the guy started. I VBACed with #2 (vaginal birth after csection) and waited a long time to get the epi and finally did about 4 hours before she was born and was happy to have it pushing her out.

The epidural! I had my baby a month ago today :) i couldnt breathe through my contractions at only 2 cms so I got the epidural. They say it takes about 15 minutes like you said but from my experience it only took about 5-10 but did not hurt at all and only took about 2 minutes for it to kick in. They set a limit for the button so you cant over medicate yourself and a urethral catheter is inserted after the epidural so thats not painful or a big deal at all. The specialist is my best friend. ;)

In regards to the epidural medication button, it has built-in safeguards to prevent you from overdosing. If you push the button more than once within a set period of time, the dispenser ignores the second request. This gives each dose enough time to work before you receive another. And when there's more medication than you need in your bloodstream, you become too sleepy to press the button. When you're no longer drowsy from medication, you'll be able to safely give yourself another dose :)

The pump button won't administer more than is allowed per hour. You can't overmedicate yourself only get a bolus as needed. My husband had one for a skin graft and I watched it go in. I think it prepared me for getting one with child birth. :)

In case you were wondering, the epidural has a "lock-out" amount ... so if a woman has reached her maximum dose for a certain time period, she can push that button all she wants but no more medicine will be administered. Sometimes we'll look at the pump and it will say "97 doses requested, 20 doses administered" or something crazy like that lol. Placebo!

Hey Rachel first time commenting but I think you should decide before hand if you want the epidural because after a certain point they won't allow you to have the epidural; there's a time frame. Congrats on the baby and hope all goes well.

I have two kids, 4 and 19 months and delivered in oakville.
    1) epidurals are great but you are smart to wait as long as possible. If done to soon they can slow down delivery.
    2) pack your hospital bag one month early. I know it sounds crazy but my first was three weeks early and you won't want to think about it once you're in labour.
You are so cute and I love your videos. 😁

I have had 5 epidurals and they all went well they worked pretty much right away not 20 mins later :-) also the button to administer more only works every 25 to 30 mins and gives you a small amount to help top you off, you could push it every few mins if you want if it makes you feel better but you won't get medicine everytime. epidurals really aren't as bad as they sound or look. good luck :-)

I would highly recommend the epidural! I had it with both my pregnancies...I was induced with my first, and went in labour naturally with the second. You don't want to wait too long to decide, or you could be too late for them to give it to you. Have you tried Eucerin Original Healing lotion? I got it at Shoppers, and is perfect for super dry skin.

Just a thought - you may want to bump up your priority of getting your hospital bag ready. I only say this because in my first pregnancy, like most first time mums i assumed i had ages to get that ready and focused on everything else first - and sadly ended up needing it in the second trimester due to unforseen complications. On top of the stress of the situation, i also had the stress of trying to get everything ready and it was horrible.

I had an epidural at about 6 cm and progressed to 10 quicker than I had progressed to 6. I didn't even feel the epidural because I was already in so much pain due to contractions. I would definitely suggest laboring for as long as you can without one, but keep in mind that they ARE actually considered to be quite safe, so don't let the horror stories scare you! It's important to make labor and delivery a positive experience, and if that means getting a little assistance from an epidural, do it!

  • @tanatheart
    @tanatheart 11 років тому

Yes, you would need to have a foley catheter with an epidural. It a tube inserted to drain urine. (Btw, I'm a nurse) If you've never had one before, it will definitely be uncomfortable at first, but if you're serious about the epidural, then it's worth it and you'll forget it's there after it's in. Also, the epidural doesn't always take 15 minutes to be inserted. It depends on the doctor and how skilled he/she is. I've seen them finish up in about 5-7 minutes. :)
