I'm from Jones Country Mississippi and I've been doing research on my tribe Creek and see this is one of the main plants they used to eat. Along with acorns, hickory nuts, walnuts, pecans, persimmon, wild beans, raspberries, grape, and wild seed plants. Like most other tribes, they hunted fish, deer was common throughout ancient Mississippi.
We also ate it as part of the Creek tribe down in Florida
Have you ever seen the saw palmetto berries in Mississippi I picked up a little berries every season I am willing to pay for information or willing to pay if you have a farm or permission from a land that has this berries which is saw palmetto berries they grow on Silver Palms also
I grew up eating this stuff my absolute favorite I always mixed it with a salad comes out really good.
That stuff is good for so many things, improves hair growth, helps prevent prostate cancer, boosts muscle mass, helps Improve kidney health ECT.. The list just goes on and on.
Really good stuff!!
Thanks for sharing this brother!!
Hey BMS, I love palm Hearts. I went to a Birthday Party for one of the ranchers nearby and they made cabbage palm stew. It was amazing. Between the home Grown black Angus brisket and the stew I was one fat happy puppy... Thank for watching my man
Man, I could just live out there!!!! if I knew the berries, plants and roots you could eat I could just live out there!!!!
I could to, wait. I do! LOL naw not really, I have a house with one saw palm in the yard LOL
lol...
Looks like you would never run out of food where those grow. Pretty much all over Florida and good to eat year round ? A very beneficial plant . Thanks for another great show.
It is plentiful. But it's protected. This was on private property so thats why I was able to do this demo. There is also a permit one can obtain to harvest the berries for prostate treatments.
My neighbors always killed them all when ever a property was developed so they could plant landscaping palms that provide no food for people or animals
In Okeechobee, Fl there are some restaurants that serve "Swamp Cabbage" which is a sort of cole slaw recipe for hearts of saw palmetto. It's quite good.
One of the ranchers out here I am good friends with had a huge birthday party. They swamp cabbage stew with home grown beef sausage that was all taken from her land. It was amazing. Thank you so much for watching.
I live in Fl that's so interesting I'll keep a lookout for it. Thx for sharing
Rick Kupfer thank you for the information. I have many saw palmetto in my garden in south Tampa Florida 👍👌
Yeah, they’ll use saw palmetto in place of swamp cabbage. Since the swamp cabbage variety is illegal to harvest. I’m pretty sure that’s due to the swamp cabbage’s inability to regrow once it’s been harvested.
@@ShamelessLainLover And mainly that it is so slow growing. You wouldn't think that a palm tree in a subtropical environment would take long to grow, but it could take 30 years for a tree to go from seed to only 5ft tall. And with only the top 20% of the tree containing edible heart, you can imagine how that could be a problem.
Wow got hundreds of this on my land next to okeechobee lake in FL, didn't know you could eat this.👍
Better not get caught it's a felony
I was just trimming these back in my yard yesterday and I had no idea it was food! I am definitely going to try eating them. Also want to try the berries and I get thousands each year.
Oh yeah! I know I would be. The berries are an acquired taste but they are mildly sweet. I enjoy them.
Hi Jay, watching this one, been treating my husband I am going to eat the one in our front yard watching you I will have the skill! LOL
thx ., thought this was about the berries but saw palmetto plants take very long to grow .. 1minute to cut & 50 years to grow .. just saying
The Saw Palm has many heads from one root location. Taking one head will not kill the plant. But it is protected, otherwise people would just wipe it out :(
Well the herb is for the healing of the nation - Man has been given the dominance over the earth - to care for it and allow it to care for our bodies / it’s much better to eat in its natural state than wait for big Pharma 💊 to cultivate in mass and strip the natural raw benefits and compact in a useless 💊 * 🤷🏽♀️
If you cook it, it increases the sugar and starch content, making it a more valuable survival meal. 💚
Absolutely. When burning all that energy getting to the hearts its better to cook them up.
That looks interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Ahh no worries, thanks for watching...
Fascinating to watch u do that. My Mom & I used to always go to the Crescent City Catfish festival. First Sat. of April. They make palm cabbage soup of fresh hearts in huge ancient kettles. I have perfected my EZ version over years using canned hearts. Thanks Jay. Fun to see the process.💚💚💚
Oh yeah!? I love that stuff. When you are looking to feed a lot of people it would be ideal to carry a chainsaw lol. Thank you so much for watching i really appreciate it.
What amazed me the most was that all that hacking won't kill the plant. I didn't know that it was tasty. Will try soon. 4 or 5 of those. Easy for the meal!
Nothing kills those plants. We tried removing a conch, hacked, dug them out of the ground, if even a sliver remains in the ground it grows back. If you burn them the roots survive under the ground and they grow back.
Very resourceful . I know what I'm adding to my ramen on the next trip!
Haha, yeah I noticed in your last video you have a lot of it around your area...
Working for state parks heard about it but never saw any of rangers jump in. Thanks for sharing ❤️🔥👍
No worries, Thank you for watching.
I'm gonna have to get in my woods and try some of that!!! I hear it is good in stews too 😄
It is! Its very starchy and yummy!
That's awesome! Thanks for showing us about those! I've seen heart of palm in the grocery store, I would guess it's pretty much that stuff! Cool!
yep same stuff. I have had it pickled. I like it raw like this. Added int stews is amazing!
i saw that the sabal palmetto is the official state tree of Florida.
Good for inflammation of the Prostate
Greet video my friend , I take it for my prostrate.
Right on. We gotta take of that at our age.
You want to find us a suitable specimen? I think you already did.... haha. Dude your content is lit.
Haha yeah! I wanted one that was stick out and up from the ground. Thanks Matt...
Thanks for the info it would be cool to know the nutritional value
The only thing I could find was Nutritional Information regarding the supplements.
@@JungleJayAdventures is it considered nutritional ? I would think if it’s in the berry it’s possibly in the bush also ! I know they are supposedly good for the prostate
@@JungleJayAdventures ok thanks for your input and the video I have since eaten some palmtop and it’s actually good taste very Siri cauliflower thanks for the video
Hair loss as well. I would assume the heart might have more starches and fiber per mouthful.
I've never seen a chigger. ...I think at least. and looks like new goatskin gloves for the occasion??! The best part is when you tried to describe the taste. Overall I would say this was another AWESOME video!! Great work Jungle Jay!!!
Thank you so much Stevie! Chiggers are very tiny tick like Mites that are hard to spot. The Itch like mad when they burrow in.
In Belize we do the same with large cohune palm heart. Delicious when cooked and feeds the family for days.
It is delicious, I personally love it. Very filling. Thank you for watching.
Man you ripped it apart like a merciless mercenaries
its a tough plant that needs tough harvesting lol.
I am from a small town in Florida and every year we have a swap cabbage festival, we use cabbage palms (Sabal palmetto) though not saw palmettos because you get way more.
Swamp Cabbage Fest?! I'm listening...
@@JungleJayAdventures It takes place in Labelle Florida www.labelleswampcabbagefestival.org/
That would be an a couple of days away type trip.
Crescent city ?
Great video sir, I’m surprised you don’t have a bigger following already. Keep up the good work! 🤜🤛
Thank you Sir. I appreciate that very much!
Hate ticks and chiggers!!!!!!
Impressive machete work! Great video with good information! Thanks for sharing!
Haha, Give your machete a good swing for good measure!
I didn't know you could eat those! Good to know - and nice presentation as always!
Thank you Sir! Yeah it's good to know. Typically one would not have to go to those lengths due to the constant urban sprawl. But there are still places left where you could get turned around and end up stuck for a while. It is good knowledge to have...
What are the benefits eating this palmetto plants
Not hungry anymore.
Big industry use extracts of the seeds to treat prostate issues and hair loss
You needed to say. What up doc. Awesome video. I hope to come down and check it out. Take care man.
Hahaha yeah huh. I did mention rabbit trails lol.
thank you 4 the knowledge
you're welcome
Excellent video sir! Got me hungry lol. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend! - Shane
Thank you I will, you too. And thank you for watching...
I need saw palmetto because i got sick of prostate enlargement
I hear you. I hope you can get that under control my friend.
Amigo este saw palmetto no tiene pepas ??
So once u eat the edible, can u bury the rest and it grow another plant ?
That part would be used up. The plant has many heads, so it won't kill it by taking one or two.
Do these produce the berries also ??
They do.
توجد الكثير منها في بلدي احبها كثيرا. وثمارها تحتوي على كثير من الفوائد للجسم
مفيدة ايضا للبروستات
Very true. It is an abundant and beneficial plant.
Que sabor tiene la planta
wowww.. I never know that.. now I know; is it sweet? or how is the flavor?
hit has a hint of sweetness. But more like a hearty vegetable. When the berries are in season I will do another video.
ooo yes please.. I love berries.. we do not have much in Indonesia like in western countries.. I love western fruits
You have wonderful fruit there...
Senja Aldee it's texture is like a potato, but has a cabbage like flavor, to me. Like cabbage, but not as strong a flavor.
I can agree on that.
Thanks for info
No worries, thank you for watching.
Real cool video.
Thanks!
Great information.
Thank You Sir!
Swamp Cabbage! Never had it but it looks good. Do you have a taste for the fruits?
I havent. They tend to be a bit too strong in flavor. But in small ammounts its quite nice...
That's not Swamp Cabbage, lol. Swamp Cabbage come from a different palm, a tree palm, not palmettos.
what does it taste like? does it taste like baby bamboo shoots? (i think i have tried bamboo), i think we get saw palmetto here in Australia, well it looks the same.
I hard to say. I still find it hard to compare it to any other type of vegetable. It does have a nice hearty vegie flavor, If the bamboo shoot is cooked long enough I could say it was similar in texture.
Thank you sir
My pleasure, and Thank you as well.
I intentionally let the plants get big on our property . They are 52 years plus old I make tea and eat them. The animals wipe them out guick, sguirles, pigs, deer ect. WWE started on blackberries then come the blue berries then saw palmetto berries ect.
That sounds awesome to me. Perfect Florida environment
Which part of the plant helps with the prostate?
Well I know there is a supplement available, but I think for the most part the heart and berries. Also I hear the honey made from saw palm is also good.
Aren't you a bit concerned about gators and/or snakes, walking in that tall saw palmetto?
I haven't any worries about Alligators but I do think about Rattlesnakes. When I find em I will definitely show them to you all here on youtube.
This stuff grows so much like weeds in my backyard. Never knew you could eat any of it. I cut and throw it away all the time.
Give it a go. Its really nice.
Thanks
Awesome video
Thank You!
I thought that was cabbage palm. And saw palmetto was the berries ?
Different plant but both produce fruit.
jajaja..nosotros no necesitamos guantes! Siempre con la gorra y ropa de Indiana Jones...
Lol.

Not only a nutritious food source but also treats hair loss and prostate issues.
I hope it taste good, if I murder on my husbands plant and it taste bad he may not be happy with me! :) Thanks for sharig!
it does taste good. But If you only have one or two, I'd find a more abundant source if you're going to just try.
Hi, I did see your meet and greet at Yankee.
Nice channel you have there.
Interesting area you life at, and thx for showing how to interact with that habitat to get food.
I was thinking about Indiana Jones, while you was cutting that palm 😂😂
Thx for sharing it with us. Maybe I will never come in an habitat like this one
Br
Mike
LOL yeah, a lot of people think Indiana Jones when they see my videos.
Jungle Jay Adventures I believe 😂😂👍 great channel
Thank you! :D
lovely video. I m taking saw palmetto supplement for hair loss. you are lucky coz u get it raw. wow !!!!!!!
Oh cool. Yeah loads of it out here. Hope it works out well for you Thank You for watching. :)
A viewer commented on this video said he developed serious side effects from Saw Palm Supplements. We had a conversation about it. He also put a link to his website documenting his journey.
Jungle Jay Adventures ohk thank you.☺️
😎 👍 👍 awesome!!
Thanks!
Aqui en honduras le llamamos guano. Lo ponemos dentro de las brasas
Me gusta asado tambien
As videos de sus propiedades y para que sirve
Well there are properties that is good for prostate health as well as hair restoration. But I like the food aspect. The Berries are good too and to answer your other question the berries do have seeds.
@@JungleJayAdventures es palmera enana americana. ?
Do you know if the berries of the Etonia palm (looks similar to saw palmetto, but no teeth) are edible. The heart is edible, but I've found inconclusive results regarding the fruit and seed.
Yes they are actually. The seeds are too hard for me to bite through I just spit those out after stripping the flesh. The heart would also be edible. This palm would die when removing the heart, whereas that saw palm has many heads so it doesn't kill the plant itself
@@JungleJayAdventures Thanks. That's good to know. I've yet to eat saw palmetto berries, I hear they taste terrible. But I found the Etonia Palm berries not to taste bad at all.
i missed out this rear, seems like i saw the blooms and and the unripe berries then nothing.
Not being too careful of snakes, are you?
Lol kinda
Just found ur channel!! So im assuming from this video you are here in south Florida??
Welcome! No not exactly, North Central not far from KSC. Along the St Johns River.
@@JungleJayAdventures awsome! I'm right above the everglades basically at the beginning of them and im seeking "survivalist" info on the everglades im new to this "hobby" but it seems to be hard to come by
Best advice is, water purification, know whats around to eat. And good working knowledge on shelter building. Keeping clean and dry.
@@JungleJayAdventures . thank u man!!
So you're saying if I like raw potatoes I'd like this?
Its actually better, so You may just love it.
We in Indonesia, would like to grow it. Would you like to help us send some seed? Wes will be very happy
I am not sure I am allowed to do that. I will look into the rules regarding that however.
contains 1000 calories but you spend 2000 to get it
Very true. "Labor Intensive"
Lmaoooooo
Is it sweet? Fruit or Vegetable?
Maybe just a hint. It's a bit bland but I enjoy the flavor it does have. I would say it is a Vegetable...
Its the DHT blocker plant
Can green apple be substitute for saw palmetto as we cannot find this in India and for leople suffering from DHT hair problems an get cured... Anyone pls help!
I do not know that, but I am sure some of the viewers might have answers to that question.
What does it taste like 🤔
Like a soft starchy veggie, firm but easily eaten.
Where in florida is this - I live in brevard.
right next door, seminole county.
@@JungleJayAdventures figured - thats why i asked. I was like... hmm that landscape looks awfully familiar
I'm trying to figure out if you have to kill the whole tree to get at a piece of the heart of Palm? Can you eat the berries and save the plant?
The one plant has many heads to it. You can take one or two and not kill it. Sensible harvesting...
hey, you forgot your camera!!!
lol
Very hard work to get to the edible part.
yes it is.
taste like raw cabbage to me. would make a good slaw I'd say
I would agree. It has sort of the same flavor just a different texture. It would be good in a nice slaw.
What about the berries
The berries are ready a different time of year than when I filmed this video. But they are good. I like them. Mildly sweet but the skin can be unappetizing. It tends to be kind of hard.
Where are you from
Originally from Northern CA but being a navy brat I lived all over. And now I reside in Central Florida.
You never going to lose the hair
lol hope not lol...
Esse saw palmito e um vigor gostei
obrigado
I was looking up berries
Some like like and some hate the taste. I like the berries myself. I generally miss my change to eat some because the bears get to them faster than I do.
What ever jungle Jim
I forget the name of it, I was following a GPS Coord 21st sent me. It was a long ride out there.
Lots of yada yada until half way thru

Very nice video thanks buddy full view from life with Ken and Jane
Thanks!
Thanks for the vid, is it true that saw palmetto is good for prostate?
Thats what they say.
@@JungleJayAdventures thank you, sir.
I have also heard they use it for hair loss treatment as well.
I want a 1 inch beard
I think you'd look good with one no worries LOL
Felony in florida
It sure is. Good thing I was on private property. Besides that went into law July 1st 2024. This video is several years old.
I want one without the hard work.

where the rattlesnakes at?
I know right! I always look for em. I see a lot of pygmy rattlesnakes but not often diamondbacks. I almost never see them. Th
