    I'm from Jones Country Mississippi and I've been doing research on my tribe Creek and see this is one of the main plants they used to eat. Along with acorns, hickory nuts, walnuts, pecans, persimmon, wild beans, raspberries, grape, and wild seed plants. Like most other tribes, they hunted fish, deer was common throughout ancient Mississippi.

      Yeah, they’ll use saw palmetto in place of swamp cabbage. Since the swamp cabbage variety is illegal to harvest. I’m pretty sure that’s due to the swamp cabbage’s inability to regrow once it’s been harvested.

    • @austrianpainterinhiding88
      @austrianpainterinhiding88 3 роки тому +1

      @@ShamelessLainLover And mainly that it is so slow growing. You wouldn't think that a palm tree in a subtropical environment would take long to grow, but it could take 30 years for a tree to go from seed to only 5ft tall. And with only the top 20% of the tree containing edible heart, you can imagine how that could be a problem.

      Nothing kills those plants. We tried removing a conch, hacked, dug them out of the ground, if even a sliver remains in the ground it grows back. If you burn them the roots survive under the ground and they grow back.

    I'm trying to figure out if you have to kill the whole tree to get at a piece of the heart of Palm? Can you eat the berries and save the plant?

    • @JungleJayAdventures
      @JungleJayAdventures  4 роки тому

      The one plant has many heads to it. You can take one or two and not kill it. Sensible harvesting...

      I would agree. It has sort of the same flavor just a different texture. It would be good in a nice slaw.

    What about the berries

    • @JungleJayAdventures
      @JungleJayAdventures  2 роки тому

      The berries are ready a different time of year than when I filmed this video. But they are good. I like them. Mildly sweet but the skin can be unappetizing. It tends to be kind of hard.

      Some like like and some hate the taste. I like the berries myself. I generally miss my change to eat some because the bears get to them faster than I do.
