Very honest review. I got one and testing it out now. The workflow to make a whole track is super easy. Made a track in like 30 min. Has tons of presets, app, usb audio. It really is feature packed. Screen and menu diving is definitely a negative. In the end you can make tracks fast, but feel the tracks lack mojo. I am sure others can make amazing tracks, but I am not blown away. Already have a few never sell grooveboxes, but still searching for the holy grail. Plan to continue using what I have and exploring available options when possible.

it's a song creation machine not a live jamin product. you write songs on it. re menu diving - android tablet app - free. mc101 is 4 track, no song mode no vocal mc707 is 8 track no song mode no vocal maschine plus a 2x price plus a bit more, no vocal fx, no zen type synth.. limited cpu on the maschine+. mcp one is about £150 more in cost, no vocal input but does have song mode but lack the synth of the zen architecture in roland's offerings. so depends on YOU and what you need in a product. I have a mpc one... write songs o it with vocals via a umc204HD and vocoder/autotune from JDXi.
Great points, is it really any other unit if you want a song mode, and do vocals and have a quite easy way to get going, I would not think it is too much meny diving if you just set the main main part for your synts, drums, etc. It looks like the best Portable studio available of you want the song mode and vocal recordin? Love the maschine plus but not good enough for vocals?
=@@magnuseriksson8081= maschine plus does have a mic input but it's not xlr or phantom powered.... no autopitch, harmony or double tracking vocal fx.. you'll need to buy external vocal fx and record them going in.... not after the fact. (verselab can do both before and after)
@@ghanezu currently writing/recording with the new update on the mpc one including the vocal pitch fx and new instruments, so far pretty great so the vocal fx on the mv1 are not needed now. I would still like access to a zencore synth engine though so .. Mv1 or mc101 is still an interesting idea.
I also have the MV-1 and when you use a powerbank and press + hold the Value button while powering it up, the microphone will work. it uses a bit more power from the batterybank. Also, i like the 16 pads for fingerdrumming and other effects. Oh, and I connected the MV 1 with my Samsung Tab A8 10,5 and ZenBeats works good.
Thanks for the tip! I've got an MV-1 on the way and was aware of the limited power mode via USB, but didn't know about being able to switch it off using the value button!
This is the most useful MV-1 review, Subbed. I think this is a very honest review, I saw some other video they used MV-1 menu so smoothly, I doubt regular musician can do it easily. As you said, if there are 3000 sounds, how can I find the sound I need, I might have already forgotten my idea before I find it. Thank you!
Fair point, but you don't scroll through 3000 individual sounds, you scroll through categories of sounds and go from there. And some knobs scroll through the list faster (value knob vs right most ctrl3 knob).
If you're thinking of getting a MC101 have a look at this, for an extra €150 you get 7 tracks instead of 4, external inputs for hardware synths and drum machines and a dedicated song mode. The Zencore synth engine built into this is incredibly powerful, there's loads of drum kits and powerful built in effects. It's pointless comparing this with an MPC One or a Maschine+, this is something completely different and unique. This is definitely a machine for the synth heads not beat makers or vocalists.
I’m a singer songwriter with no computer, I have had a daw in the past and don’t particularly want to go down that route again I do however want a stand alone song writing machine

Ania, I own Roland TR8s, MX1, SP404sx and MC707. And i need to correct you. Screen is not retro. Screen is fine. I dont say "convenient", i say "fine" and also modern!! You mistake what is old screen with what is modern screen. TR8s and MC101 have the same screen and it is fine and very nice. The little screen here is small because Roland wanted to put more buttons on the case and maintain similar form factor like the other Aira gear. You also mistake from the begining what is Verselab - Verselab was NEVER made for live performance. In a way i guess you could, but is it made only as a portable all-in-one production box and from this point this is a perfect product. For live Roland made MC707, MC101 and TR8s. Thing is, you simply CANNOT make a product to be both portable and convenient. Not possible. To make it portable, you put small screen to save battery life and you do more shortcuts on the buttons and menu diving for the screeen just like MC101. And i have seen videos of MC101 and nobody complains. For convenience you make big case, big screen and no batteries because this is already heavy and consumes more power, but also have more buttons and knobs and is more convenient to use. So if you wanted convenient product, MC707 is your box (or TR8s). Many people want the perfect single machine which will cost enough, but not much , will do magic and will help them make hits and will need nothing more. Usually there is no such thing. Still, I think Verselab gets very close, because Roland have great sounds, Verselab is small and uses batteries, have the Roland sequencer and synth engines and is just a cool easy box for someone who does not need a full studio. I bet many people will produce great things with this. One AMAZING feature you missed to say is Verselab have builtin memory card slot (like most modern gear), but unlike the other gear, Verselab can write down your entire song as a wav file (maybe mp3 too) to the memory card! This is a killer feature! You dont need to export stems or connect to laptop -everything happens on the machine. Now, pad lights during day are a problem. Tr8s and MC707 have this problem too, but i cant get them in the park as they dont use batteries and i dont have a power pack now. So not a huge issue for me. Pads on MC707 maybe are also hard to hit no idea. I havent started to use it yet. So to anyone out there, if you want perfect live rig - yeah you can use only mc707 or tr8s but truth is if you pair one of these with mx1 it gets sick. I didnt do the perfect demonstration, but i did a little house video where i take advantage of these in a pair. Not trying to self-promote, just to illustrate. However if you want an all-in-one portable production studio - Verselab could help. This is for Roland. Speaking of Akai, i saw your other video, that you got an Akai. These are great. I personally would love one of these, but already got my Roland rig and plan to use it. Point of all this was - the screen of Verselab is small for a reason. Two reasons - saving space on the case, saving battery life (big screens consume more) and by the way also big screens cost.more. Otherwise probably the modern Akai MPCs (like MPC Live) are one of the best all-in-one machines to go. No idea about the pads. And my other point is - guys, Verselab is not for live. It could maybe, but it is made for production in mind. Just like in the past there was KORG Microarranger for example. So do your homework, before being sorry on the money spent. In the era of the UA-cam videos it is unforgivable not to do a research. This is kinda why there are only like few Windows operating systems and a huge amount of different Linux operating systems - each with distinctive flavor of the same and a bit different purpose, but in the end boils to how you use it and which one is more convenient to you.
Hey thanks for your point of view! As I mentioned in this video, verselab was not good for me as it was not what I was looking for in a groovebox/music production hardware. It never was an in depth review, rather personal thoughts.
You're wrong. This is the same screen roland had used since the 80s. 2×16 LCD [OLED screen mods by 3rd party parts]. Real estate space is definitely not the reason they use this screen. There are watches with higher resolution, touch interface, bright, and come in variety of shapes and sizes. Even the Roland SP404 mkII has a round LCD with GUI so they have capability. They are cheap, that's all. Roland trying to maximize profit, they know nobody likes these screens but they kept this design anyway. Fortunately, they made it possible to USB connect with zenbeats for a large touch interface with GUI as an optional visual display rather than 2×16 80s screen.
I;m just learning to use mine and having to put the time in to get results - yes it is a steep learning without a doubt,Re pad sensitivity - i had the same issue with my MPC1.Bottom line - it's much easier to click on buy it now than play it now !
Thanks for the detailed review. I disagree a little with the issue of live performance. The vocal features make it ideal for live performance. And, by setting up your tone tracks ahead of time, you can perform using the pads or a external midi device. The lack of external midi tracks (like on the Circuit) is a challenge, in my opinion, in terms of live performance.
Great honest review. About recording outdoors, that is never a serious limitation to any musician. Forget recording vocals outdoors. Ain’t gonna be of any good quality. This machine is for geeky musicians who love parameter altering and menu diving. Paired with an iPad, it’s a great producer Swiss Army knife. A time consuming learning curve is need, as with most Roland boxes, as with the MC’s.

If it does not respond when you tap, something is wrong with your device and it is not for performance, more for studio work and you can use it with an iPad with Zenbeats too. MC 101 or 707 for live performance. What other unit to use if you want to record vocals?
There is akai force that I believe is very good not only for vocals but making a full song as well. The only drawback with akai force is the size of the unit - but it does do a bit more than the verselab.
Pads like this shouldn't be played with like they are keys on a keyboard. They should take a beating when you drum on them, essentially. I want a MV-2 or MV-2 Pro with a big screen more like the MV-8800. And maybe it should take care of a few more limitations, because the MV-1 is kind of expensive for what it is. The ZenCore engine seems good, but why not literally transplant that stuff into a MV-8800 like sampler / groovebox? It makes no sense they released a cheaper machine which basically tries to directly compete with the Maschine MK3 or Akai MPC One. I also agree the iPad screen thing is not a solution for the problem.
I liked this review. The technology is grea!!!!!t BUT those buttons are horrible!!!!! I setup a midi keyboard and that made inputting notes great. Lots of menu diving. Roland stopped taking phone calls. Its very hard to e-mail a problem. They return the e-mail a day later and its not your answer. The terminology tracks clips section are just a little different It takes a little bit of time to understand them When you put in the sound packs They are SZD files you cant preview them before you place them on a pad
I hate it. , sucks as a midi controller, editing sample start and end points takes forever even holding shift , sample slice is hit or miss . Sample editing is faster. On almost all samplers . I’ll stick to Korg gadget and the Korg electribe esx combo.

I've seen screens bigger than that on gear from the 80s, lol! Roland just don't seem to make good grooveboxes, probably their best machines were the MV-8000 and MV-8080 from the early 2000s.
It’s meant to connect to any phone or tablet and it cast full visual on that screen with all the Fx and synth parameters shown yet doesn’t use the external device, it’s all down inside the verselab. People don’t get it. And it’s not a groove box it’s meant for people to actually finish complete tracks not just jamable loops. Even in live I would always get stuck staying in session mode with all my variant clips, too indecisive to commit to a finalized arrangement. I justified it by the idea that it’s more creative that I always mix and remix live in the moment and so I would set goal of about 45 min worth of clips. Now I can’t work creatively on a computer anymore (back then I worked outside). Ever since I got into working full time + on a computer for non-music profession it’s changed my relationship to the computer. I’ve tried but blah…. Now with the hardware gear I have I need to spend a lot more money on a mixer or digital/tape! Recorder or an interface with more inputs. I’ve been thinking of this instead tho for its focus on guiding you thru to finish a song + plus the vocal effects, inputs, zen synth engine. With a cheap tiny raspberry pi or arduino nano I could mount a 7.5in or 10 in touch screen to the MV-1 as it’s dedicated screen (look like an mpc x) and “Fogettaboutit”.
@@Diddddu I never felt like the MV-8800 had a lot of menu diving at all, as it has dedicated buttons to any section of the device you need to be in. You're literally not correct here. I would literally still be making all my music on the MV8800 if the damn device wasn't so slow to load/save projects. And to some extent, you're going to be scrolling through lists in any device that allows for that many samples or projects etc. MV8800 + external screen and mouse = best sequencer work flow of any hardware sampler out there even now. And I actually hate the user interface of something like the MPC One. It's very clumsy. It can do a lot, but still clumsy af.

Roland just downgraded their MV and MC product line IMO, without the screen on their predecessors, making it so hard to use

Doesn't matter how big roland makes the screen they are going to still make you menu dive.The mv 8000 and 8800 wasn't to much better lol.

People don’t get it. And it’s not a groove box it’s meant for people to actually finish complete tracks not just jamable loops. Even in live I would always get stuck staying in session mode with all my variant clips, too indecisive to commit to a finalized arrangement. I justified it by the idea that it’s more creative that I always mix and remix live in the moment and so I would set goal of about 45 min worth of clips. Now I can’t work creatively on a computer anymore (back then I worked outside). Ever since I got into working full time + on a computer for non-music profession it’s changed my relationship to the computer. I’ve tried but blah…. Now with the hardware gear I have I need to spend a lot more money on a mixer or digital/tape! Recorder or an interface with more inputs. I’ve been thinking of this instead tho for its focus on guiding you thru to finish a song + plus the vocal effects, inputs, zen synth engine. With a cheap tiny raspberry pi or arduino nano I could mount a 7.5in or 10 in touch screen to the MV-1 as it’s dedicated screen (look like an mpc x) and “Fogettaboutit”.
@@Diddddu I never felt like the MV-8800 had a lot of menu diving at all, as it has dedicated buttons to any section of the device you need to be in. You're literally not correct here. I would literally still be making all my music on the MV8800 if the damn device wasn't so slow to load/save projects. And to some extent, you're going to be scrolling through lists in any device that allows for that many samples or projects etc. MV8800 + external screen and mouse = best sequencer work flow of any hardware sampler out there even now. And I actually hate the user interface of something like the MPC One. It's very clumsy. It can do a lot, but still clumsy af.
@@PHeMoX I wasn't knocking the MV i'm sitting looking at one now do i use it anymore no.Dope machine but kinda slow for even back then.The mouse and vga monitor made it easier but other wise......
