30 yr old, ferry captain, OB surfer, and my dad was Local SF turned west side SC surfer in the 80’s. This video hit on all levels, sounded like a recording of my dad explaining the surf scene back then haha. Wish we had a little more of the old school ways nowadays. Cheers Bill stoked on this channel. Keep the stories coming!
Hi Bill. Your ramblings cracked me up. we weren't really mean like Truelove was, we just didn't except shit from anybody. I hated when some jackass would paddle in front of me and then say"I didn't think you were going to go". god that would get me fired up. I laugh about it now but as you know it was a big deal, especially at Ocean Beach. If you got burned it might be your last wave that day. Funny I miss all that.
@@davealexander7561 even funnier Dave you were probably the first guy i ever heard talk in the line up back in the late 70s. Certainly the first never actually talked to.
Man it's funny. Learned to surf in 1996 when I went to college in San Diego, moved up here and been a Bay surfer since 2003. Not once have I had a serious beef with anybody. Times change, I guess.
It always amazes me that when someone mentions if a crme suspect was bullied, as if that was a critical factor to their acting out in violece later. Nearly every kid i knew was bullied, by someone most every year of 12 years of primary edu, then in the workforce it continued for many. In the past 25 years it all changed, thankfully so. I also like it now, when woman are playing beach volleyball in the 50s+ 4 on 4 game, the men are better sports.
It's a double edged sword, huh? Nicer folks but crimony, so many more of 'em. I know it's counterproductive to my own happiness to resent change, but I do miss the old days.
No one talked or smiled in the line up in SC. Why were we all so angry?! Crawling down the bluff at the hook, trying not to slip off the moldy “steps” at pleasure point or get pounded getting out at high tide…the terrain & attitudes kept the crowds down. I remember surfing the slot at the lane, Josh Loya, Flea, etc walk out on the bluff to jump in and the tension jumps immediately because we knew everyone was on guard 🫣
@ yep, I showed my kids a UA-cam video I found of the rope at the hook. Not too many longboards out there then…even pleasure point entrance weeded people out🤔😁
I wasn’t a surfer but i would here from surfer friends about surfer wars, punks or whatever they are called. Fights breaking out for best wave position. Just a side comment Bill, one thing that validates my ending up working and living around the Santa Cruz/ Monterey Bay area is that Jack O’Neils sailboat “the Marie Celine” was sold to him by my older sisters Father JT Fowler, my sisters name is Marie Celine. Not sure if she is named after the boat or vice versus. Just a little interesting info. 👨🌾⛰🌲
You're NOT old Billy! Listening to you this morning is like listening to you 40 years ago... Surf stoked MADNESS!❤
I don’t feel old but the calendar 👍
Big shout out to Bill for making these videos, many thanks
Andre thanks for the support brother
Thanks for the video. Very entertained. I was not a surfer but would accompany my bf when he would go surf. It was a cool culture

good too see u agin bill love your weather channel
Thanks mark appreciate that
Excellent tales from the surf, through time and tide. Nice weather reports as well!
Really appreciate the encouragement
Never surfed in my life but still enjoyed the story!
This was fun. My friend growing up in Sunnyvale was a surfer. Had a weather radio to hear conditions. Told me about the kooks and fights.
Had wx radio in the car. It’s an awesome culture
Agreed, woman added a level of civility to the line up. Imagine how the world might change if more women enter high office🤞
Totally agree.
Thanks for explaining like it was, and how it's not like that now.
👍
My only ever conflict in the water was with Frosty. I’m sure I was in the wrong but he has no problem letting me know. Good times
Different world back then.

Yes your group knew how to use their words😊
I’d live my late late years on web cams happily
😊

You were there. It’s hard to explain to the kids now. I remember using the rope at the hook to get in.
