The Municipality of Alangalang, Province of Leyte, was founded in November 1883. It has fifty-four (54) barangays with total land area of 15,052 hectares and 43,975 total population.
Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 57,185. This represented 3.22% of the total population of Leyte province, or 1.26% of the overall population of the Eastern Visayas region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 380 inhabitants per square kilometer or 984 inhabitants per square mile.
