Aye, For Boromir! He was a human. No more no less. He gave us honor, courage, and hope. Not strength, which most miss. It’s human to fail, to falter. It’s what we do when we fall that matters.

    "I will take it."
There is no greater love than those who lay down their own lives for another.
All these examples and more are why we love these tales and characters. We may not fight off a horde of orcs to save some halflings but I would strive to have these traits in my life for as long as possible

Elrond and Galadriel made everything they could to support the Ring bearer in his mission to destroy the Ring although they knew that it would mean that the time of the Elves in Middle Earth would come to the end. Yet they accepted this fate for the greater good

Little sad that Finrod's sacrifice for Beren in the werewolf pits of Sauron wasn't even mentioned. It's framed as the greatest act of friendship and loyalty in the Silmarillion. And I tend to agree.

I actually am convinced that the single most selfless thing (you could call it a sacrifice) within the Hobbit / LOTR stories was Bilbo giving up the ring. In the movie I think it's understated as the ring drops to the floor, but in thinking about it, Bilbo did something that no other ringbearer did (save for Sam, who had it for a minimum of time): he gave it away.

Gandalf quote on Boromir's last hours:
"It was a sore trial for such a man: a warrior, and a lord of men. Galadriel told me that he was in peril. But he escaped in the end. I am glad"
I think his sacrifice is what allowed him and his spirit to escape a much worse doom in life and after life. Just when I thought Boromir couldn't possibly be any dumber, he goes and does something like this... and totally redeemed himself! Lol

Despite not being directly in Lotr, I would also highlight the sacrifice of my beloved Finrod when he saved Beren on Tol-in-Gaurhoth. He enabled not just the continuing of Beren's and Lúthien's story, but also many other stories, finally also in fact the birth of Elrond, Arwen, Aragorn and so on. He's my most favourite elf, therefore I add this example of sacrifice as well.

Arwen. I think she sacrificed in a major way. Choosing a mortal life, which separated her from her family, to give Middle Earth an heir out of her love for Aragorn. The legacy of her choices and what she gave up had an impact that is easy to overlook.

When you mentioned Boromir being a bulwark of the Fellowship, it occurred to me for the first time that Boromir is the only party member to carry a shield. While his death was tragic, I believe he was always prepared to fight to the end defending what he believed in, not just fighting for the sake of fighting.

I’d love to see this for the earlier ages. So many great examples in the Silmarillion.
Shoutout to Finrod as my fav. His first sacrifice was leaving his only love in Valinor and braving the Helcaraxe because he was worried about the fate of his people if left to Feanor. Later, He left his throne and ventured to confront Morgoth himself to repay an old debt to Berens family. When Sarons werewolf came to kill Beren, Finrod broke his chains and killed the werewolf with his bare hands, expending every last ounce of power he had fulfilling his oath. He died so that Beren could live - and the line of Earendil, Elrond, the great kingdom of Arnor, Aragorn could continue.
Finrod was an instrument of Eru himself and his sacrifices were absolutely pivotal to Middle Earth. He was GOAT

  • @lathenhertel8564
    @lathenhertel8564 3 місяці тому +17

I agree with Frodo having the greatest sacrifice in LOTR, but personally, I would rank Hurin as the greatest sacrifice in the whole legendarium. What Morgoth put him through after his capture was equal if not greater than what Frodo went through with the One Ring.
Had Hurin not led the rear guard for Turgon, there very well may not have been Earendil, in my opinion the most important character in the first age.
I think the curse Morgoth put on Hurin and his family was worse than the effects of Frodos quest, and Frodo got to leave to Valinor in the end, while Hurins life ended in tragedy.
And Hurin never once broke in the face of Morgoth.

I've always seen him as someone who lost effectively everything through the 1st 2nd and 3rd age ( his parents, Gondolin, wife, King etc ... ) he had every right to dispare and turn away from middle earth yet he persisted and strove to stand against the evils of the world despite all the loss and ultimately helped lead the free people's to victory and for that he is my personal favourites character in all the lore

No doubt for me that Boromir became my favorite Tolkien character after I read of his last stand. I was just a child, not quite 11 at the time... I was greatly influenced by it.
Now, I'm in my late 50s, I read LOTR (all of it) each year, and will continue to do so as long as I'm able.

Hubby is involved in a company that is a huge PR firm. Once a year they do something special for Hubby’s company so we were invited to see ‘Return of the King’ before it was released. It was breathtakingly done, seeing Tolkien’s works, decades later in a humongous screen. As we were leaving another executive with hubby’s company was saying how superior this film is to ‘The Two Towers’. I could barely stand his comment! Hubby’s stern look kept me silent but without Helm’s Deep when King Theoden comes to life and Helm’s Deep stands strong, what a goofball comment!😠

Gollum was the true hero, he did more than destroy the ring; he kept it safely away from Sauron for hundreds of years (killing his own cousin to do so), suffered persecution, imprisonment, and torture at the hands of both Sauron and his servants and Gandalf and his servants. He was held in bondage and forced to serve two ungrateful and ignorant hobbits who were taking the ring to Sauron, and he begged them continuously not to. And then when frodo was corrupted by the ring it was Gollum who took it from him and ultimately destroyed it with the help of the gods. Words matter.

[tongue firmly in cheek] Sacrifice?! You call that sacrifice?! What about Tulkas?! There he was, minding his own business with a tall tankard in hand, when it was suddenly time to track down and capture Melkor... again! Still, our honorable late-arriving valar did what perhaps only he could do, and he ran off to bag the bad guy... again! I can almost hear him still, with a great sigh in his deep voice, passing the mighty cup over to Yvanna there on the party lawn. "Fine... Hold my beer... I got this..." Such a noble sacrifice of his fine brew!
If one would consider the true depths of middle-earth philosophy, never forget the Tulkas factor.

Another notable point about Boromir's sacrifice is that he had earlier tried to use his physical strength to take the ring from the much weaker Frodo. Indeed, Boromir bragged about his superior strength to Frodo before lunging at him. Boromir's later defense of the hobbits reminds us all that physical strength is meant for service and not for self-enrichment.

Although many say that Sam is the true hero, Frodo really is. It’s a bit like the Anakin/ Luke Chosen One thing. Anakin was the true Chosen one/ Hero while Luke was the one to instigate it. To be the catalyst. So to, Frodo is the hero while Sam is the catalyst to it.

I always thought that the sacrifices of Boromir and Theodred were studies in the reactions of their fathers who both had younger men to replace them. They reacted very differently to their deaths.

Finrod taking his last moment of enery and magic to bind his oath with human kind which later produced the downfall of evil is one of the greatest sacrifices in the professor's stores. Then lithaun in the chamber of the Valor of death renouncing her elf elven half miar bold to become mortal.

    I have to wonder,
When Aragorn would become the king, if Boromir and Faramir would have both lived, Faramir became the Prince of Ithilian but where would Boromir have reigned?

I have a more unique take on Frodo's sacrifice - SAM WAS HIS OTHER-HALF IN EVERYTHING! Gandalf, in his infinite wisdom, bound Sam to an unbreakable promise to stay with Frodo because he knew it would take Frodo's love, compassion, and sweet spirit combined with Sam's stubborn practicality and devotion to Frodo in order for them to have any chance to get the ring to Mordor. And he was right - Frodo would have failed many times without Sam by his side... and in the end, that promise and that bond forged with Frodo, led to Sam leaving the Shire and his grown children to follow Frodo again across the sea to the West and the Undying Lands instead of finding his end resting next to his beloved wife Rosie there in the Shire that he loved so much.

In my 18 books, loyalty is all. The Hartmann Family turned it into a motto, but I don't want to busy your tl with Latin. In English, "If you can't do good, better do bad well."
I don't think JRRT would like that. But writers go on odd paths.

There is no arguing with any of the choices you made for great sacrifices. Before realizing your list was just for LotR, I kept thinking of the humans (name eludes me) who saved the people of Gondolin in their retreat which ultimately saw the ring of Barahir transferred to Aragorn’s forefathers.

If Boromir and Merry & Pippen looped around to meet up w Aragorn, Legolas & Gimli and this didn’t happen and they didn’t capture the hobbits and just keep moving I dont think anyone in the Fellowship would’ve survived so Boromir sacrifice was huge for the whole story in general

I will always argue that Sam was the true hero. He may not have borne The Ring except for a short time, but Frodo would have failed countless times if not for Sam's guidance and protection. Sam would have willingly given his life to protect Frodo. Fortunately, it did not come to that.
    Excellent video!

Smeagal's sacrifice was by far the greatest. Holding the ring and keeping it away from Sauron for literally hundreds of years, even killing his own cousin to do so. Suffering scorn and persecution and eventually torture at the hands of the Sauron and his servants, then imprisonment and further torture at the bidding of gandalf. Then held in bondage and servitude to two ignorant hobbits who ignored his consistent warnings not to take the ring to Sauron. And then his final sacrifice where he took the ring from a corrupted hobbit and gave his life to destroy it, saving Frodo's soul in the process. If you don't understand that you don't understand the works of Tolkien.

I don't think Frodo deserves to be on the list. Also, Gandalf holding back Durin's Bane at the pass should've been included if only for it's poetic value.
