      emanuel e How can a "lack of religion" be a religion? is not smoking a habit? is a "non athlete" a profession? Is a person riding a bicycle called a "non-motorist"?
      Atheism is the exact opposite of a religion.

    • @DeFreshS10
      @DeFreshS10 9 років тому +29

      emanuel e Wow, i think you are confused.
      *Atheism is not a belief system nor is it a religion.*
      "_Atheism is usually defined incorrectly as a belief system. Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods. Older dictionaries define atheism as "a belief that there is no God." Some dictionaries even go so far as to define Atheism as "wickedness," "sinfulness," and other derogatory adjectives. Clearly, theistic influence taints dictionaries. People cannot trust these dictionaries to define atheism. The fact that dictionaries define Atheism as "there is no God" betrays the (mono)theistic influence. Without the (mono)theistic influence, the definition would at least read "there are no gods."_"
      From Atheists.org
      From Meriam Webster: a disbelief in the existence of deity
      From urban Dictionary:
      1.) A person who lacks belief in a god or gods.
      So tell me, how is atheism a religion?

    • @DeFreshS10
      @DeFreshS10 9 років тому +21

      emanuel e No. no. no
      Theism is the *belief* in a god moron.
      A-theism, means *NO* belief in a god.
      I am a fucking atheist, how can you tell me what i believe and what i don't? How about i start telling you what you believe?

    • @DeFreshS10
      @DeFreshS10 9 років тому +18

      emanuel e Just because you believe something does not make you religious.
      you just told me ""Theism" comes from Greek "theos" meaning "god", so "atheism" is "without god""
      So are you a god then? do you consider yourself a god? because that would violate a couple of gods commandments...
      it's enough to have a set of stupid beliefs like you religion has.
      So tell me, how can a *LACK OF BELIEFS* be a belief? how is that logically possible dude? Do you see how stupid that sounds?
      Check this out:
      IF ATHEISM IS A RELIGION THEN:
      Not believing in Santa Claus is also a religion.
      Unemployment is a job.
      Not collecting stamps is a hobby.
      Not playing tennis is a sport.
      Abstinence is a sexual activity.
      An empty bowl is a meal.
      Silence is a noise.
      Remaining silent is a speech.
      Not fighting is an act of violence.
      Bald is a hair colour.
      Not being part of the KKK makes you a racist.

    • @DeFreshS10
      @DeFreshS10 9 років тому +13

      emanuel e You just told me the word _theist_ means god and _atheist_ means without god.
      So since you are a THEIST you must consider yourself god right? If theist=god? I'm using your definition
      Unless you would like to change your definition of _theism_ to the proper one: *a belief that a god exists*
      and then i would be correct about my definition of atheism.

    I live in Bulgaria (born and raised), and religion here has no such influence on people's everyday lives - this tradition was canceled during communism. Everyone nowadays has the right to believe in anything, but when it comes to the public sphere, religion is not the basis for the moral behavior of citizens. What you have in USA, is very close to thoecracy (at least, in majority of states). I sympathize with people like AronRa - their struggle is important to all of us. What they try to achieve is common knwoledge here, in Europe. Sad, but true.

    While you read and write these comments, babies are dying and suffering from disease and starvation.
    The religious mind, or a person who believes in "fate" and "everything has a reason", can absolve themselves of the grief that comes with that. It's okay, those babies that died in horror and pain are in heaven.
    An atheist can only assume the most obvious reality -- these babies died and suffered for no reason, and their death is final. Needless death of the young and innocent is so much more tragic when you don't make baseless assumptions about an "after-life".
    "After-life"... what a disgusting concept. What a convenient excuse for the most inexcusable things.
    Atheism allows us to accept and take responsibility for our species. Theism is about "absolution". "Everything works itself out in the end." Theism is simply an irresponsible assumption, with immeasurable and disastrous consequences.
    Every church-funeral you go to of a tragic death of a young person, people will be telling themselves, "it's okay". It's *not* okay. We can *obviously* do better, but we won't, if people would rather talk about the glory of Jesus, instead of the reality that we *all* live in.

What you stated was "Even I could write a Holy book and get more prophecies correct than the Bible!" I asked you to do it. You obviously can't but you sure know how to repeat something someone else has taught you. There will still be religious nuts who believe in fairy tales that happened 100 million years ago, such as DNA magically appeared out of nothing milions and millions of years ago. Then it "evolved" into what exists now. C'mon. That's not scientific. That's just an excuse. You should read the bible and come up with a better excuse to reject it.

      Prophecies? The fact that the book of Daniel predicted the precise rise and fall of the most powerful kingdoms to exist in the ancient world. (Babylon, then Medo-Persia, then Greece, then Rome) Read Daniel 2 and 7 if you consider yourself a free thinker. The king of babylon had a dream and Daniel was able to interpret it. History shows how accurate the interpretation of the dream. The vision that Daniel has later verifies and interprets the dream he had. It verified Medo-Persia was run by 2 kings:one less and one greater. Then in the book of Daniel it was predicted that Greece was going to take Jerusalem by one king (Alexander the Great) and then the kingdom would split in four, signified by Alexander dying and having the kingdom given to 4 generals. Then he predicted and saw in the dream that Rome would take over Jerusalem by Greece. If you actually look into the history of Israel/Palestine as well as the history of Jerusalem you would know it is verified the prophecies in the book of Daniel are accurate and factual. Read a book.
      Let's look at more things the prove the bible and it's prophecies to be true

We , and other freethinkers do not have `faith` , we only have confidence in what we know to be true. If something has not been established by facts , then it can not be asserted as true. `Faith` is the exact opposite , it is a strong belief in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof. ALL religion have only faith. The difference between you and me is , I will follow where the evidence leads me to and because science takes no sides , I only follow the science and the facts that back up and will amend every time new discoveries are made. Look you`ve come to an AronRa video , so why don`t you spend just 20 minutes on one of his video`s on the subject. If you listen to the facts on what we already know you might understand more. You may have fixed beliefs that are disproved , but just remember , Science takes sides with nobody, Science is only science when science can prove it with facts and evidence. Science does not know how to lie and when it does it is very quickly dismissed as being science in the first place. Science works and you are witnessing it right now by reading this comment which was delivered to you at the speed of light. I have read the bible but I did not understand what I was reading. It was not until I began listening to open minded persons as yourself that I went back to the bible and realized I was confused and getting frustrated and angry from the words in it. However, one must always come before the other and sometimes is a long time coming. I hope more people like you speak up and continue to engage in recovery programs without giving all the credit for such a difficult undertaking to a "power greater than" themselves. It's all down to the individual, they did it and are doing it! Hopefully more people will see that and feel empowered by that, as they rightly should.

      If it works for you, great but I think you don't need to keep a record of how many days sober you've been. Also, if you can learn to work through whatever issues led you to drink, you will find no special power in alcohol over you. Drink responsibly and infrequently. Learn that a single beer doesn't need to led you into a bender, and don't destroy your confidence and pride (feeling oh I have to start all over again) if one day you stumble.
      AA is not the only way, and you are the one that has the power to say "no" to alcohol, or the power to limit it to a single drink without going overboard. A child has the mindset of "all or nothing"; learning how to be an adult is the only way to move forward.
      The "I am an alcoholic" shaming beat down of your self-confidence, and then to state that all the effort you made is due to god is truly disgusting. We don't need the shaming labels. You are not an alcoholic, or a druggie or whatever, you are a person who felt a chemical or psychological dependency on something.
      Think I am wrong? Well for some people, their drug of choice is food. They are just as psychologically and chemical dependent on overeating as you were with alcohol - do we tell them to stop eating altogether and count the days since their last meal? No, of course not. If they can learn self-control, so can you. Words to think about.

    While you gave evidence that belief in the Bible is unwarranted, and that those who claim to believe in the Bible are confused on many points, and willfully ignorant about important scientific findings, you failed to fulfill the promise of your thesis, and develop a theory of "Why does anyone believe the Bible?". But, no matter: it's because they are programmed to do so through trust in their loved ones, typically as children, trusting parents, who tell them that the Bible is True.
    Thus, belief in the Bible doesn't come about by reading the Bible. People who believe the Bible do so *before* they read it. And that belief is maintained through deceptions about the contradictions, failed prophecies, forgeries, fables, and false observations of the natural world contained therein.
    Update: I realized later that instead of interpreting the title as the direct question "*why* does anyone believe the Bible?", an alternate understanding is as a rhetorical question "why does *anyone* believe the Bible?", implying that the Bible is not worth believing. In this latter view, you *did* indeed fulfill the thesis of the title of this video. I apologize if I have accused you wrongly.

It might be that the answer to my question could be inferred from your post, but I wished to get more details, more explicit cause from you.
      So, I understand from your post and your reply that you asked for the Bible because you wanted some information about "God". From this, I can infer that you had an a priori assumption that the Bible is a reliable source of information about that figure. Therefore, you fit my model in that you *believed* the Bible *before* you read it. Furthermore, you wouldn't have had this belief unless you adopted it from *something* that *someone* you trusted had said to you. I expect that this trusted person was a family member or friend, though perhaps some otherwise-loved authority figure, like a teacher.
      Moreover, you had some faith that this "God" figure was a character *worth* seeking. Again, you must have already been programmed with this evaluation *before* you read the Bible, as you *at last* have admitted, "... I already believed ...".
      Come on!? Do you expect us to belief that you adopted faith in "God" *ex nihilo* without any influence from family or friends? And you accuse *me* of folly?
      DocZom You're right: my hypothesis *is* overstated, in that I present it as an absolute generalization, without any equivocation of "mostly", "almost all", etc. OTH, I haven't yet come across a falsification, SpongeFreddie notwithstanding, so I don't really feel the need to equivocate at all.

      What you're suggesting is that you chose to investigate christian belief, but never once in your entire life, encountered the word god, never met anyone who believed in christianity, never heard anything about jesus or god in school, in books, on the tv or anywhere else. You don't think that might be hard to believe? I'd say unless you were locked in a room without windows, in solitary confinement with no access to any information from the outside world at all, you're not being honest. Can you honestly say that was the case? you yourself admitted that you chose the bible because you grew up in a Christian area, which means that you had christian influence, direct or not. If you were in as secular a world, as you imply per your claim, then you should have had equal access to books on multiple gods.
      Furthermore, yes, everyone wants to know where they came from, but without ever hearing about the bible from anyone else ever, and intuitively understanding what it contained? There's no reason to believe that at all. How could we? It goes against our understanding of learning and we can't test the claim to verify it.
      What we can demosntrate though, supported by evidence, is that around 50% of children have imaginary friends and that the activites in the brain, that cause and allow this phemomena are 100% natural in origin.
      They are also the same systems that allow people to believe in gods, ghosts, fairies and boogey-men. Empathy, the behavior of learning from and believing authority figures (which speeds our growth of knowledge allowing us to learn faster and survive better) and Alien Agency which allows us to ideintify other being, attribute them as having their own minds and will, enabling us to understand that sounds in the dark may be dangers (look at how many people are scared of the dark, especially children) and also allows us to sympthise/empathis with others.
      I put it to you that, living in what you admit was a christian society, upon asking what a bible is, you would have been told about what it contains, after which these processes went to work. Beyond that, your continued belief is a matter of choice and circumstance of your own creating. you convinced yourself, and allow others and yourself to add to that belief, avoiding information which is contrary, whether you know you're doing that or not.

      spongefreddie after your reasons for searching for a bible, i can only think of how different your life and ideas would have formulated had you sought knowledge in a book more like the dhammapada or other ancient sutras of the buddhist pali canon. there is more than one way to seek meaning in the universe, understanding of what reality is. the christian religion is not self evident in our reality, only in the minds of human beings. the bible teaches you that you will go on after you live, you have a soul and spirit, your body is not just one thing.... you believe all that? it teaches you that youre seperate from other things, but in reality, all life in the universe is part of one giant cosmic event with many occurences that allow life to take place. you dont have to exist. no one ever asked to be born. we all need to take a step back and evaluate what life is. i mean, come on, christianity just logically disprovable as a concept and moral system and philosophy. i know your comment is old but i just wanted to say that youre looking from the wrong angle. the idea of a anthropomorphic creator god is not a good assumption about the universe. the idea of a personal god in general isnt a great assumption. you said youre worried about your backyard and not others, this would be a very buddhist concept... the entire religion is based on the idea of the self in relation to the external self/outside physical world. the organism is a part of the universe and its part of us, the outside world around you is a part of your organism because it determined every single thing your body would develop into. its inseparable from you. the bible does not evaluate reality at all, it just tells you to obey and illustrates why you shouldnt fuck with god basically, and then how god has to kill his own son to save you from his own wrath through his grace, while remaining omnipotent, even though he couldnt just forgive us and avoid that instead of creating a loophole against himself. so much for omnipotence. and also, he creates people into eternal damnation. not cool

    I think the answer is that actually, a lot of religious people don't really care about it enough to either believe or disbelieve. I went to a Catholic primary school, and we would sometimes have tests about bible knowledge, and I remember distinctly that most of the other kids barely managed to get a passing grade in most of those tests. As you demonstrate here, most religious people don't know much about the bible and in fact they often believe a bunch of stuff that isn't in the bible or which the bible directly contradicts.
    I think that the most important part of religion to religious people is the sense of community, and as long as being religious doesn't prevent them from getting on with their life, they don't care enough to make any active choices about it. It's not about the question of whether or not something is true, but the question of whether or not a belief will cause turbulence in their life.

      @@marshalllaw4116 Peppered moths. They used to be white with some black spots but now they're entirely black with almost no examples of the former still existing, but that wasn't even my point. You attempted and failed to present yourself from an unbiased centrist position but in reality, you're a creationist with no integrity which is made evident by your parroting of creationist talking points. I highly doubt you "examined" both sides but rather started from a position and worked (if at all) to find any evidence that supported what you already believed. Evolution also isn't a religion since religion requires either a supernatural aspect such as a god, or a more colloquial aspect such as ascribing great importance. The only way the belief in evolution is a religion is if some geek gets super excited about it, and by that same logic (and dictionary definition) evolution is a religion in the same way football is, but not in the same way Judaism, Christianity, or Islam is. Attempting to present it the same way one would any of the Abrahamic faiths is incredibly dishonest. And a last point, Evolution does not require faith. You do realize that even if humans didn't evolve from our scientifically established ancestor species, evolution would still be a thing even if only in a smaller way. All evolution means is change over time, and species change all the time. For example, humans are on average 4 inches taller than we were 300 years ago. That is a change observed across our species. We were collectively all once shorter, and now we're not. A change occurred in our species, which is literally what evolution is.

Satan has deceived many into believing that there is no God, and it is simply because he wants us to have the same fate as him (eternal death). Jesus made it possible for all humanity to saved by dying for our sins because he loves us so much. If you read the vision/dream that the king Nebuchadnezzar had in the book of Daniel you WILL be fully convinced. Read the book of Daniel and study it along with historical facts. Mind blowing! The bible encourages people to love their enemies, do not render evil for evil, do not lie or steal, or murder. Why would to you would to dissuade persons from believing in someone who encourages them to be decent people in society.

      as8494 A vision/dream as recorded from a third party is not evidence, it is not mind blowing (unless you have a small mind to blow) when you read these stories there is no way to prove Daniel knew what his dream was before he told anyone, that's a tool any storyteller can use, they write passages with the end already thought up. As for the bad things people do, the old testament [1/2 the bible] says to do horrible things. The new testament has been used by evil people to do evil things, it says slaves obey your masters, it says women do not speak up in church and be submissive to their husbands(no mention of his character), it says homosexuality is a sin(Epistle quotes) which is taken and run with by right wing Christians, who ignore the fact that divorce is just as much a sin and none will rally against that.
      What I'm trying to convey is no matter how disillusioned you are and potentially good hearted you are, there are others doing horrible things in the name of the same god, simply watch kidnapped for Christ if you want one of many examples of how even Christianity given total control can turn into a hideous thing. While as an atheist I can not only agree with and practice all of the same good moral actions, I can disagree with the bad ones. You're eating a decent sandwich with some bad meat in the middle...
