It's very difficult and stressful. I placed my order this week! I’m super excited. I wanted a pair of dress boots but just didn’t want to deal with Nick’s or Whites. They were more than accommodating and the customer service is top notch. If you are like me and just want a pair of casual, dress boots, definitely contact JK, it’s not just construction boots.
I have had multiple pairs of custom boots from other companies (Nicks). I just got a pair for work from JK boots and its night and day difference. Biggest difference for me was there is basically no break in time, if any, it's like 1/8 of the time compared to other boot company. Also, the custom fit felt snug and true, like a glove. I will never go back to other boots after wearing JK boots. Give Tim a call, super knowledgeable and he will set you on a path for your last pair of boots you will ever buy.

Like anything specialized or custom you HAVE to make sure you’re spending money with the RIGHT company. I used another boot maker who is local to me on Oregon I thought it was on the same level. After 2 weeks I learned real quick the company was not. If i could back I would have gone with JK. When people ask me my opinion at work because they know it’s a passion of mine I honestly share my opinion because at 500-700 for a pair of boots you want the experience to be excellent

Well today was the day I bit the bullet not that I have a sizeing issue but really wanted something top quality to handle my work as a arborist so got full rough out to handle all the brush and abrasive conditions. Looking forward to getting the notice in the mail! Keep up the awesome work guys!

I used to think that only professions that are on their feet all day long should get a custom boot, but after wearing mine for 8ish months, I seriously think everybody should wear a custom boot or shoe. Everybody walks, right? The difference in my how I stand, walk, and just my general posture is so much better in my custom boot vs anything else. Do you know the history of when we went to heavily manufactured boots? That’s something I’m really interested in. At one point all shoes / boots were probably individually made right?

@MoosenAK - The machine-made Goodyear welt was patented in 1869. That was the first nail in the coffin. The second nail was WW1, when (in Europe at least) the demand for military boots skyrocketed, leading to standardization of lasts. This introduced the concept of off-the-shelf footwear to much of the world. The third nail was the great depression of the 1930's. "Build quality" went out the window in favor of "cheap to produce", as while everybody still needed boots, nobody had the money for good boots. WW2 was a bit of an anomaly, as the military had very tight specifications, which meant a bit of a revival of the quality boot. The fourth nail in the coffin of the handmade boot was the post-WW2 economic boom in conjunction with overseas manufacturing becoming economically viable. This drove many bootmakers to overseas manufacturing. The fifth nail in the coffin was the introduction of injection molding & modern adhesives. This meant that instead of building a boot's sole out of leather, rubber & nails, and then stitching it to an upper, manufacturers could use a molded sole held on with glue. Faster to produce, very little skill needed from the workers, and cheap. The sixth & final nail in the coffin of high quality bootmaking was the rise of "Sneaker culture" in the late '80's & early '90's. This was the death knell for many bootmakers who had been hanging on by a fingernail... The bootmakers who survived while still making high quality handmade boots are the ones where local working requirements needed specialized footwear that most manufacturers wouldn't make - hence the logging/firefighting boots of Spokane - or the ones who had moved largely to overseas manufacturing of generic "safety" boots built to a price (a-la RW). The ironic thing in all this, is that while the rise of technology came close to killing off high quality handmade boots, the rise of technology also lead directly to the current revival of high quality handmade boots. The internet has saved many of the companies that were barely hanging on, because suddenly there was a way for people worldwide to find them. Likewise, there are an increasing number of new bootmakers worldwide who would not exist without the publicity of the internet being able to connect them with buyers. It used to be that your choice of boots was limited to what was available locally. Nowadays, the world's bootmakers are all a click away... Eh, the above may be a bit rambly, but it covers the high points of the fall & rise of the handmade boot. Hope it answers your question... Cheers... G

Just order a custom build, can’t wait to get them. Last 7 years in fire went through most of the name brand fire boots(whites,nicks,Drew’s, lowa kennetrek danners zamberlan and haix. Non of them really lasted more that a couple of assignments and max 2 1/2 years before rebuild or completely done. So I’m hoping this will be a good boot.
I get that a boot that supports you perfectly is going to help with comfort, but my understanding is that this route is extremely firm. Which I guess might be OK if you walk around on dirt, but for hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt, tile, etc) how do you address concerns of shock and your back overtime? Yes, a good sock presents some cushion. Yes inserts exist, but there is such variety in inserts, and it doesn't seem like they can really do all that much? And if inserts play a big enough role do they not negate some of why you buy a custom boot? When you begin making a boot for someone how important is their environment to your recommendations?
Honey lug sole will help greatly on hard surfaces, it's a much softer compound than the 100 lug. The downside is that they (honey lugs) wear out a bit faster.
I have a leg that is almost 1/4 “ shorter than the other. Can you build a boot that has a thicker sole than the other one so I can quit putting heel lifts in my boot?
I don't know about this company but Wesco has a picture of pair just like that on their Instagram page. My mom lived all of her adult life with one leg shorter then the other it really screwed up her back

12:21 just hurt alot lol. Bought to pairs of Thorogood 1957s all with cracked midsoles from the factory. If I would have just invested $200 more I wouldnt be dealing with this nonense. Literally looking at resoling a new pair of Thorogoods.
How important are heels? Is it mostly preference? Mostly environment? Is a person's gait considered? Does it have to do with foot shape? Napoleon complex? Of course I don't just mean height, but actual shape. Block, angled, arched, etc
My 2 feet are different, especially after breaking one ankle and getting hardware put in. Gotta have speed hooks and can't usually fit into fully gusseted tongues. We call it my frankle. Nice video!
JK Boots what sole options are available on this boot? I need some grip for winter snow and ice. Not a ton of snow and I’ve but need not to slip. Really like the 24 inch brown top and lace to toe style. Thank you
A LIncoln said his custom made boots were the best he ever wore . You can look it up , its fact . The boot maker had him stand on a paper and he drew a pattern of EACH foot , adding padding under, in any spaces .

This whole no break in jargain makes no sense. I know there is break in and it’s not easy from a friend but I will order a pair. Excited to get a new pair of hand made boots. Not excited to have to judge people for saying and possibly lying about break in.
Can that flat lug sole be put on a forfront 8" boot..even if it requires 3 or four mid soles stacked up to make up the difference in say a Cristy wedge...?
I had a buddy who bought a 30 dollar pair of brahmas at Walmart, we were shooting a mole under a sidewalk to pull a gas pipe through, and he pulled the mole out before shutting it off, it wacked the tip of his boot and straight up exploded it, the entire steel toe was showing and had a huge dent in it. Lasted him one day shit was hilarious

I was wondering do you use pigskin for the gusset because I got a pair from you about a week ago and loving it I was just wondering because it seems much more pliable and thinner leather and has the grain that’s like a pig skin

If you are referring to the horned soles, yes absolutely. We often make logger boots where the horns are only on the shank, and otherwise have a regular sole.

Not sure on any particular time frame, but I do know that the Handmade footwear industry has been gradually declining for some time.

no we use cow leather throughout the boot
