Steve Turre is definitely among the unsung heroes in the jazz pantheon. That Woody chose him instead of a tenor sax player makes for a fascinating sonic pallette.
The undisputed king of modern jazz .There will never be another Woody Shaw . I was priviledged to know him and studied with him and he was a very caring and beautiful person who had a very tragic ending .God bless the music and soul of Mr. Woody Shaw .
I saw this band one Thursday evening at Ronnie Scott's. It was one of those unforgettable moments apart from Woody's great horn playing, Tony on drums blew my mind. Great musical experience!!!
Woody Shaw was an amazing trumpet player who never really got his proper props. The media never really sat down to listen, all they always grab for the newest wonder on the horizon. This is a great concert with Steve Turre on trombone. All the soloist are great.
I saw Woody Shaw in Cairo back in 83/84 at the AUC ( American University Cairo) auditorium. I was just discovering jazz and he was part of US State Dept's cultural exchange. I wish I could find out more about that concert.
Taft Chatham Yup.. that was with Victor Lewis, Larry Willis, Stafford and Turre.. they had a long run there as a resident band back in’82-83. Great memories!
Real jazz musicians are usually happy to play ANYWHERE, I guess most real musicians are like that regardless of the style of music. The music is the thing for them, and hopefully for us. Fuck the venue!
Sorry but I can't imagine Miles Davis being happy to play anywhere. His attitude was "you people don't deserve me but I'll play your gig. Just don't ask me to smile."

I actually agree with you but we might be the only two people, ok WS3, so that's 3 of us.

Woody was a monster with a very unique and beautiful harmonic approach. Played with fire and joy. RIP

You're talking about Wynton without mentioning him directly. I get it.
@@kalzone60 And if he is talking about Wynton,...so what? Wynton has never been this original or this much of a badass. Maybe he's right.
Woody🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯🎼🎶🎵🎶🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺
I grew up with the drummer Tony Reedus RIP my friend
My brother , Gerard Harris, was a friend of his and still is a friend of his wife and daughter
Saw him at Howard Rumsey's Concerts By The Sea in Redondo Beach,Ca in 1982..What a venue and what an awesome sound .One of the best.

I caught this group at the Keystone Korner in SF at that time. One of the really great gigs.

Same here. Those were the days. The Keystone Kard. 10 shows for 30$. So many great folks coming through there. I count myself as very lucky.

Woody, play the "modale scale" like a Freddy Hubbard.....
Woody Shaw on percussion.
He picked that up from his tenure with the Jazz messengers
As of today's date, 2 people need counseling.
One year later, I'm happy to report that the amount of people didn't augment
Great gig . What’s the 3rd tune called ? Thanks .
😂😂😂❣️
That’s actually a flugelhorn that he’s playing! Awesome concert!
That’s what I was thinking 🤔 or a cornet
@@dustincdouglas2290 It's a flugelhorn:

About 10 minutes in I realized this concert is in a cave.
Anyone know the name of the last tune?
Turreでけぇ!!
Shawの身長でさえ182cmくらいなのに...
よく聞く: ハレルヤ! もしもし, ルカ (∟∪⊂∀ ˘_˘) PS バベル...タワー!
Mulgrew Miller is so much a better pianist than Onaje Allan Gumbs. I wish he'd recorded this tune in the studio with Mulgrew.
Lmao dont do the kid like that
They were both very gifted pianists - they just had different approaches to their respective crafts
Don't say stupid shit…
What sort of horn was Woody playing? That thing looks huge. Maybe he is just really small. Ha.
Flugelhorn
THIS IS AMAZING. WHAT'S THE SONG(S) CALLED?
Jared Tinkham “in case you haven’t heard”. It’s on the Little Reds Fantasy album and the Dexter Gordon Homecoming album. Both excellent records...
Wow, thanks Tim!
First song is called "Rosewood", of his album Rosewood (1978)
Rosewood written by Woody.. a great tune
What a dump he's playing in. Poor guy.
I soliti noti...

Read his autobiography, you might think differently
