Great review!!!You. Me. Same page about remakes. I’ve seen the Broadway revival and the original film is one of my favorite films and up at the top of my best of Spielberg list. I was wondering how much musical this one was going to musical especially since the last decade of film musicals has been meh at best. It’s almost as if the filmmakers don’t trust us to be able to enjoy a straight adaptation of the Broadway version so they mix in elements of the film. Like we already had the film, just commit to the vision of the musical. You know I love a film that sets a historical mood and the original really drops you into the time and place of the story and the way we get a sense of the passage of time works so beautifully in support the arc of the characters. So to hear they dropped the ball on that is a let down. I’m still going to see it just with lowered expectations. Welp, I just looked up who plays older Nettie😳😳😳😳 REALLY…
Hey, CC! Yes, definitely on the same page. It's the same conversation and talking points repeated ad nauseum. Love that you saw the revival, and I totally agree about the appreciation for it and it being one of Spielberg's best. I definitely think the filmmakers weren't willing to lean all the way in for the sake of the viewing audience, and that was even evident in the marketing all but hiding the fact that it was a musical. I have nothing against that person at all, but it's clear the audience was thrown off by it. You made so many great points, but I hope it works for you, even with the lowered expectations. Hope you're having a great holiday! 🙏🙏🙏
Your review is spot on! The movie lacked character development and we did not get the full aspects of their journey. Also the ending fell flat. She hugged nettie and her kids like they were only gone for a month.
Fortunately if you’ve actually read the book you know the stage musical does a much better job than movie of keeping to the novel. Everything from the stage play couldn’t be kept
"For a month" took me OUT! 😂😩🙃 I totally agree. There were so many storytelling opportunities that were missed here, and I wish we could've seen some of that. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts! 🙏🙏🙏
I agree the older nette, umm it's just kind of random. We love her but it felt kind of strange and I love Her but she just didn't have the same feeling as original squeak. I think the music was good but all of the other characters needed a little more depth, sometimes I felt the characters were just saying their lines rather than living the lines if that makes scene
Right! I definitely like and enjoy her in general, but I thought it was such an odd choice, considering the impact of that scene. "Saying vs. living the lines" is a great point! We could've done so much more with Squeak/Mary Agnes as she's such a important part of the book as well. 🙏🙏🙏
I love the depth of this review! I'm excited to see the film, but knowing that it's a mashup makes me want to watch the previous musical adaptations first. That might give me a better idea of how this version came together. Keep the marvelous reviews and recaps coming D!
I was initially concerned that you wouldn’t give an authentic review of this movie, given that you were invited by Warner to the screening AND because you are such a fan of Fantasia, BUT you proved me wrong! If this review doesn’t get more attention than that would be unfortunate because you did a fantastic job here!!!! Thank you so very much!❤
Hey, there! While I'll never be mad at an advanced screening or seeing actors/actresses I enjoy, it's something that still will never influence my general perspective. Although film is subjective and our experiences with them can differ, I always believe in giving authentic and honest commentary. Thank you for checking out my review and giving me your thoughts! 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the review D. I loved the book and the first movie. Never saw the musical. So not sure how I will feel about the new version. To me the old movie is a classic. I will reserve my opinion after I see this. Merry Christmas♉
Hey, Riva! Same here. Hopefully, if they do another tour for the musical with the success of this film, you might have a chance to see it. Yes, please let me know what you think once you're able check it out for yourself! Feliz Navidad to you as well!!! 🙏🙏🙏
I saw a press tour interview where Taraji and Blitz basically admitted that "Ms. Celie's Blues" was not supposed to be in this new film, but Quincy Jones (as producer) insisted that some of his songs from the original be included, and so the song was brought back.
Excellent review. I look forward to seeing the latest version, but I imagine my sentiments will be aligned with yours on this one. Great video mate. 👍🎬
I appreciate all the constant support from you all! I tried to delve a bit deeper with this one, and I really hope it helps people appreciate the power of the original story by Alice Walker. 🙏🙏🙏
GREAT REVIEW - sort of🧐! I was so mad, when I heard that they were going to do a remake of The Color Purple. It was my Mama's favorite movie and I am such a HUGE fan of the original. But when I found out that it WAS NOT going to be a remake, but instead a re-imagining. I wasn't mad anymore, but I still didn't want to see it. All of that changed when I saw the Trailer. I then decided that I would at least give it a chance. So I threw on me some purple and went on Christmas day. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! The casting was PERFECT! The singing was SUPERB! The costuming was AUTHENTIC! The dancing AWESOME! The cinematography was GOD'S PAINTBRUSH! They did an EXCELLENT job of merging the BOOK(That I liked), the ORIGINAL MOVIE(That I loved) and the BROADWAY PLAY(That was okay). It was refreshing and uplifting.I have seen several reviews about the movie, some good and some bad. So, here is my honest review - I really enjoyed it and I look forward to seing it again on Saturday. I will say this to anyone that is thinking of going to see it. If you are going to the theater expecting to see Whoopi, Oprah or my Mama's The Color Purple - DONT GO! 👍💙
I love the original Color Purple movie. It had heart and soul, and really touched on true natures of things. Haven’t read the book or seen the newest one. It’s sad to hear that basically it lacked some soul, ya know? This is one of those iconic movies from back in the day. I’d take soul and truly feeling over flashy any day. But it still sounds like it’s pretty good, though. Excellent review.
Hey, Rob! Yes, that first film really packs a punch, and it had so many emotional layers to it. I still think there's a lot to be appreciated about this one, but it definitely is not in the same league as the first, in my opinion. Appreciate you checking out my review, man! 🙏🙏🙏
Hey D! Wonderful work on this deep-dive. We read the novel in school and I saw the 85 adaptation...it has been so many years so though I was curious about this modern adaptation. As you noted, the trailer alone, let us know off the bat this was going to be its own thing. You are right, Hollywood is going to Hollywood so whatever you favorite movie is...chances are high it will be remade eventually. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing this latest version, but I'll keep in mind the points you made here, particularly in regards to the music and the screenplay which needed more work. Happy holidays & here's to a great 2024 D!
Hey, Anthony! I love that you're already familiar with the novel and '85 adaptation. Yeah, I just can't bring myself to get up in arms every time there's a new announcement about another remake. At this point, it should really be expected. I hope you enjoy the experience with this new adaptations, even with your experiences with the previous mediums. Happy holidays and wishing you an awesome 2024 as well! 👏👏👏
My absolute favorite part of the orginal movie was the scene of Shug signing her way back into the church and having her father reconcile with her ( I fold every time and turn into a sobbing mess) this did not carry well into the new adaptaion. I think like you I give the movie a C, I won't ever watch it again unless my mama really wants to go and see it.
Agreed! It was a very bold and powerful moment in that version. I understand what they were trying to do here, but it definitely lacked the same impact. I appreciate you checking out the review and leaving your thoughts! 🙏🙏🙏
Now, I know we’re not on talking terms but as a FRIEND, I felt like it was my obliged duty to show support and see what a particular Mr. Movieman had to say about, The Colour Purple. I will say, I did like your comparisons to every version you’ve seen / read and the differences between them all. I haven’t seen ANY version of the movie or stage shows or read the book but I’ll definitely check this out 🙂
Hey, Mike! I suppose we can make peace since it's the holiday season after all. Considering the legacy of this one, I really wanted to highlight that here. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts whenever you get a chance to check out one or more of the versions, compadre! 👌👌👌
Hey would you still be interested soon doing a podcast discussion here on UA-cam about the 2014 movie Beyond The Lights? I’m trying to reach out to a few other channels too hoping I can have a big group together for a discussion soon, as it’s ranked higher and higher up my all time favorite films list over the last close to 10 years now
@@DMovieman Great man! If there’s anyone else you know on UA-cam who may be interested, please let them know, if they would like to join a podcast discussion on the movie
I knew that from a dramatic performance space that this movie would be alot better than the original movie simply, because these women [ Fantastia Burrino & Danielle Brooks] got a chance to become these characters over a long period of time. Kind of like the difference between watching an all-star game versus watching a team that has played several seasons together and built a chemistry, bond, and a connection to each other.
Thank you! I was so excited and grateful! 🙏🙏🙏 I highly recommend the stage version, and I actually hope they start another musical tour after the success of this film.
Such a great and detailed review! Although I saw the new film and really enjoyed it, I completely understand your points. Something was missing, and I think it was that they didn't break any new ground. There has got to be something from Ms. Walkers book that hasn't been depicted fully yet. He should have thrown in something different about the story or even a character. Dig deeper. It ended up feeling like a very well-done retread, with songs. You gave it a shocking C+, but I would say B.
Hey, there! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the film, and I appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts. Yes! That's exactly what I'm saying. Giving us an aspect of the story that we didn't already see before, and leaning into more of that to distinguish it from the first adaptation. I thought this was beautifully done, but like you said, a beautifully done retread as opposed to something fully distinctive.
I know I’m a bit late but hope you and the family had a awesome Christmas and another great review I have been intrigued about this movie loving to hear the good about the cast I def feel like I want to see the originally movie I do agree Hollywood is going to Hollywood 😂 was surprised they incorporated new music but like you said it’s def a catch 22
I appreciate the kind words! Critic aspirations aside, I'm mainly a guy that just loves to talk about movies. Definitely check this one out! There's a lot to be appreciated, and I hope people enjoy it. 🙏🙏🙏
The director Blitz said that he wanted to dive into Celie's psyche and explored her imagination as the character overcome her trauma. This is what Blitz said in an interview. "We know that that story has trauma," he continued. "What we know about people who deal with trauma is: The imagination is fertile, and that's how people overcome. It's also a musical, so we have the ability of music to explore where she is. Visually, it's unmatched."
Little off topic: Black Americans have to stop letting these foreigners have a huge hand in our stories. I thought I would never say this, but I'd rather had Tyler Perry direct this opposed to a guy from Ghana... Are we directing movies in their country? This movie lacked everything the original had
I'm shocked to see that so many people are suprised to find out that this wasn't a remake, it was a reimagining. Some folks don't like musicals. Different strokes for different folks. But where have these people been that they missed that this was a film adaptation of the MUSICAL stage play? Promotion for this movie has been extra heavy and the musical stage play wasn't unknown, especially in the black community.
I totally agree! I saw a bunch of people saying they felt tricked because they didn't know it was a musical when it was CLEARLY promoted as such. Apparently, some didn't know there was even a stage musical? I guess some folks can't help being ill-informed and out of touch. 🙃🙃🙃
Aw disappointing! Wasn't expecting a C. I agree, remakes are not creative and annoying. But I love the cast and loved the 1985 movie so was like, I've got to see this anyway! It's on my list and I'll still eventually see it but your review is making it what I thought it was going to be. 😅 great review though!!! 💚
Right! I try to be fair and not draw too many comparisons, but it was way too difficult not to this time. I honestly hope more people are eventually able to see the original musical, but it's brilliantly and beautifully made. 👏👏👏
Firstly, how are you doing today? Wow you actually went to see the movie. When they mention that the movie is going to be a musical, I was like nope, I am good. But I am just here to hear you intake on the movie?
Thats what Tyler Perry just said his life was horrified by his step father he imagined being somewhere else he created Madea from listening to his momma and her friends so be it
Oooooo noooooooooooooo! I guess I shouldn't be surprised with the way they "commercialized" it somewhat. It just didn't seem authentic - or maybe true to the actual story of TCP. I'm going to still go watch - but TCP is a staple and I'm so disappointed.
Hey, La Belle! The irony is that the stage musical was pretty true to the original story, even with the "lighter" tone. But the execution here didn't really allow for the same complexity or authenticity of what we've seen before. I'm really excited to hear your thoughts on it! 👌👌👌
That’s a shame it was just ok. I haven’t read the book or seen any of the musical adaptations before. I wonder if I’d have a different perspective going into it without knowing much.
Hey, Ryan! I actually didn't realize this was you at first. I think it might actually help to not know as much going in. I'm actually revisiting the novel right now, so I'm interested in seeing how all these different adaptations line up to the original experience. 👌👌👌
I disagree about the older Nettie. The emotions hit me like they were meant to. I would like to here you elaborate on why that casting didn't work for you.
There's not too much outside of what I mentioned in the review to elaborate on. The casting felt more in line with having a name for the role rather than what served the emotional crux of the moment. At least for me. However, I'm glad the emotions hit the way they needed to for you in that moment. 🙏🙏🙏
In my opinion The man that played Mr. [ Coleman Domingo] didn't do well as an actor & may have been better swapped with the man who played her father [ Deon Cole] .......For some reason I felt personally like he had more of the dogmatic ability to be a tyrant than Coleman did, at the end of this film I felt a sorrow for Mr. that I didn't feel when Danny Glover played the original character.
RIGHT! I love Colman Domingo, but I was really impressed by Deon Cole! He definitely gave the menacing edge to Alfonso, and it really could have worked for Mister instead. As far as the sorrow piece with Mister, that's actually a part of the original novel, so I think the filmmakers were trying to flesh out that piece here.
@@DMovieman I can see that, the original film makes Misters curse almost laughable after witnessing his abuse of Celie. This movie made you really sorrowful for a man that could really be more of a three deminsional character [ 🤫 Someone needs to do a Mister orgin story called "The Colors Black & Blue]
🗣 TOO MUCH SINGING! 🤷🏽♀️ It was a musical tho. I give the movie 🎥 a 7 out of 10!! This is my opinion, you might love it! I like the original better tho
For me, there was actually a lot less singing than I expected having seen the stage musical. I definitely agree that the original is better, though. 👌👌👌
@DMovieman yes I do understand where u are coming from thanks for sharing honestly I just think oprah wanted to just make more money because we didn't need a color purple movie musical think about it they had the musical play and the original movie which was outstanding nothing has touched the original movie color purple 💜

Thanks so much for tuning in! While I enjoyed aspects of this, I much preferred the stage musical as an overall experience. 👏👏👏
@@DMovieman the stage musical is fine. That I agree.
Thats what Tyler Perry just said his life was horrified by his step father he imagined being somewhere else he created Madea from listening to his momma and her friends so be it
This review is everything I feel.
Thank you for checking out the review! I'm glad to hear we shared the same thoughts on this one. 🙏🙏🙏
@@DMovieman I needed more though. Like I live panel. I have thoughts that I need to express lol.
O forgot about the broadway edition
Yes! I hope they consider doing another tour for the stage musical after this, because it was a really great experience. 👌👌👌
Happy to support the movie and all the black actors but….. I wasn’t impressed with this “reimagining”
Understandable! I think there was a lot of potential that was missed with this new iteration.
I agree
🙏🙏🙏
🗣 TOO MUCH SINGING! 🤷🏽♀️ It was a musical tho. I give the movie 🎥 a 7 out of 10!! This is my opinion, you might love it! I like the original better tho
For me, there was actually a lot less singing than I expected having seen the stage musical.
I definitely agree that the original is better, though. 👌👌👌
This movie sucks
I appreciated aspects of it, but it was mainly a letdown for me.
@DMovieman yes I do understand where u are coming from thanks for sharing honestly I just think oprah wanted to just make more money because we didn't need a color purple movie musical think about it they had the musical play and the original movie which was outstanding nothing has touched the original movie color purple 💜
