Hey Aaron my name is Randal Powell out of Tennessee, and I have been watching your show with this dozer (little lefty) and I've agreed with most of your decisions, but your decision not to pull the crank is in my mind is a terrible idea, it is the heart of the engine and thus the heart of your tractor,I understand your situation I too am rebuilding and tractor its a ts5 allis Chalmers high lift it had a rod bearing knocked out I had the crank turned, my engine is a 271 Detroit I still have about a year to go it's a 1954 model. I hope you change your mind about the crank, your brother in tractors, Randal 😊

Hey Randal, we have really been thinking it over and will definitely be removing the crankshaft on both engines. You are definitely right, it just was not setting well with us either. Your tractor sounds like a fun project. Dad and I really have love for Detroit diesels and AC tractors. Really appreciate your advice an kind words. 👍Thanks for watching too!

Yes Aaron it's a good project and I'm really looking forward to hearing that Detroit sing, I've rebuilt the left steering clutch and it wasn't too bad and had the original hydraulic pump rebuilt and putting it together a piece at the time it has been very interesting. I myself have just retired a year ago and still getting used to it!I have really enjoyed your project and looking forward to seeing it's return to life, you guys carry-on and becareful, your tractor brother Randal

Oh yeah now we are into the fun part of cleaning all the oil passages in the crankshaft. Right now is the time to assess any wear on the crank and make sure there is nothing left of the old gunk in the system. My other favorite UA-camr always says: a little heath goes a long way. Can't argue against that LOL. Do you have any idea if the crankshaft on the D4 is forged or cast? Or any idea of the consistency of it?

Not sure yet what the composition of the crank is. We are 90% sure we are going to pull it out and investigate further.

@@lifeafterourloss If it's CAT im sure it's forged cause the crankshaft has to withstand a lot force. With casted crankshafts if you drop them on the floor they bend or go out of spec slightly and than your in trouble.

And I always enjoy watching a smooth operator behind the stick!😀🇨🇦
