Hi, everyone! I rewatched this video 7 days after it was published and I'd like to point out a few things. 1) Sorry about the background music. I didn't realize how jarring it can be on certain parts. All part of the journey to getting better, though. Thank you to everyone who pointed this out! 2) This camera's predecessor, the E-M1 Mark I, DOES have PDAF. It's a hybrid, though, and has more CDAF points than PD. This doesn't change my verdict about the E-M1 Mark II having better autofocus. 3) It was also pointed out to me that updating to the latest firmware enables the camera to use PDAF in video. I've always had the latest firmware since I bought it, so it's probably why I never noticed the difference. This comments section rocks! Keep on sharing information and experience about this camera and photography and general, folks. ~Chuck
I got one about six months ago, as my first mirrorless camera, after having shot on SLR and DSLR cameras for around fifteen years, starting when I was 10 years old. I'm absolutely blown away by both the whole Olympus M43 system and this camera in particular. I paid 395€ for it and it seriously has levelled up my photography. Not because the image quality would be an improvement over my old APS-C cameras, but because it just makes shooting so much easier, more reliable and ultimately more fun. I absolutely love it! Especially paired with the excellent 12-40mm 1:2.8.
I'm glad you're enjoying it and welcome to the MFT community! I'd love to see your photos if you want to share some. And I definitely agree with your "more reliable and ultimately more fun" take.
I love my camera, the Olympus EM5 Mark I with a 75-300mm II lens. I have used it since 2018 and never regret. And now, I upgrade to an OM1 camera. A big LIKE for the video. Thanks for sharing and happy shooting. Have a nice day. Greetings from Singapore.
Thank you! I'm saving up for either the 75-300 or the 100-400 as well. It's almost Eagle season here and I'm trying to save enough to be in time for Eagle photos. haha! I'm glad you've upgraded, though. Happy shooting!

Some years back I upgraded from my point and shoot to the OMD E-1 M2 and use the Panasonic Leica DG 100-400mm f/4-6.3 for wildlife photography as my main creative hobby. I am happy with all the features and feel that I won’t have to buy another camera EVER as my bird photos improve every time I practice. I have some secondhand lenses for portraits and landscapes so the OMD E-1 M2 is great for light travelling and experimenting, with or without a tripod!

Anyone contemplating buying a used M1 Mark ii should also consider looking for a M1 Mark iii which has some nice upgrades compared to the Mark ii. I found a great deal on a used M iii and look forward to using it when Santa leaves it under the tree this Christmas. I certainly agree with your comments about the M1 Mark ii, the M5 Mark ii or iii is also worth looking at.

I'm also a long turn Nikon FF "the legend" photographer and enjoy the Olympus out in nature for wildlife and birding photography, but as I'm pretty new to MFT I'm struggling a bit with this camera about the CAF for birding. I got the 40-150 /f 2.8 connected, which is a beast, but I kind of begin to have doubts about the autofocus system capabilities for birding. I also have a Sony A7r 3 paired with the Sony 200-600 lens and this combo is catching the birds unbelievable fast and accurate. But I really want to continue with the MFT system for the weight and size advantage. For the rest of my photography, I'm totally fine with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mii. Have any recommended settings for a successful bird in flight autofocusing? BTW. Nice video, like it.😊
I own the EM1 Mark ii and a Canon R6. I'm afraid that you're not going to get great autofocus for BIF with the Olympus and its 2016 technology. The Sony is going to beat it, especially with that 200-600 lens vs the 40-150.
Hi, Rene! So for anything that's moving (i.e. sports, wildlife): - My focus area is always at either 3x3 or 5x5, depending on how much of the subject I want to fill my frame. I find that it helps the camera keep the subject in focus and tremendously ups my keeper rate. - I also use pro-cap low. The Great Blue Heron shots at 13:57, for example, are shot with C-AF, 3x3, and pro-cap low. I've done the same when photographing dogs running, people playing sports, and butterflies/bees perching on flowers for nectar. Truth is, though, more modern cameras have AI tech that makes tracking animals easier. The E-M1x has a rudimentary version of this tech if you want to check that out. But, for the price, the E-M1 Mark II is more than capable. Happy shooting and thanks for stopping by!

rectification about the E-M1 original : it HAS phase detection autofocus, and was at teh time the best autofocus MFT camera you could buy. It was also the only 16MP MFT camera with phase detection that was made. You can even see on the wikipedia page you linked ! right below the line where it says it has 81 CDAF points, you can see it has 37 PDAF points !
You're absolutely correct. I wrote on the screenshotted (is that even a word?) Wikipedia page I included that it had fewer PDAF points rather than completely CDAF. Perhaps my handwriting or the colors I used just made it hardly visible. But, yes, you're absolutely right about that!
The mark1 is definitely a good starter camera, too! But you do have other choices. What is it you wanted to do with your first camera? Are you also looking to dabble in video or just purely photography? Does the 350 budget also include a lens or do you have a separate budget for that as well?
I got mine for roughly 500 usd, still using it on daily basis. What's more? The good used lenses are even cheaper!! I also got a rather comprehensive set of used lenses that cover most of the situations; 17f1.8, 25f1.7, 12-40f2.8 and 35-100f2.8; for less than 900 usd. All of these combined are even cheaper than getting a brand new R7 or X-T50 with inferior kit lens!! In term of IQ, it definitely can't beat my FF Nikon or my APS-C Fujifilm for sure. But it is great enough for most of my usage.
You might want to normalize the background music levels as the sudden increase in background music in between speech pauses is a bit jarring. Great video.
Thank you for pointing that out! I honestly don't know much about taking cinematic footage so I probably shouldn't be the guy discussing this. But from my limited experience, I do think 4k/30 with OM-Log is easy to work with. Even 1080/60 is plenty slow for me. 😅
Great video but the sidechaining you have on the music with your vocals is too quick and the ratio is too high. It's kinda distracting. You don't need the music tbh, but if you do just turn it down and have a slow release on the sidechain
Thanks for the input! Still getting a hang of video editing but this seems to be a consistent complaint. Definitely keeping this in mind for the next project!
@@NewLifeMoves you know like when a radio DJ is talking over a song that’s still playing and the audio ducks out of the way for him? It’s basically a compressor doing that automatically-it just ducks the volume of the music while the DJ is talking as it’s triggered by the volume of noise coming through the DJ’s microphone. Ratio refers to how much volume the piece of music will drop by-how many db. Then you want a slow release so the sound doesn’t rush back in too quickly as it can be jarring. It’s quite common in electronic music to sidechain your synths to the kick drum so they get out of the way for the kick to have more impact and there to be less frequency competition-there’s only so many frequencies and if you want a loud mix you need to sidechain at some points.
I don't think so, Brian. I haven't printed anything larger than A4 but most of my photos are printed on 4x6 paper for album purposes. At higher ISOs, you do notice grain more in the larger print but on a bordered 4x6, I find it practically unnoticeable. There are many other photographers who've shot with less megapixels and made it to magazines, though. For reference, here's a magazine photo I found on Flickr using the E-M1 Mark II: www.flickr.com/photos/irass/49644824041/in/photolist-2oCJxvx-Sf6MQm-2eZizhu-2hZDJHa-2on4sLL-2gkos2y-2g2Zqhe-2b6qhzb-2i9xxqh-2ehBHLo-2iCWGA6-2kEGwVz-24hBMbQ-Hp8A38-2g1SNSa-2g1SPhD-21vNwyr-2g1SQQx-2g2hqKG-2g1SMNM-2g1SPzy-2g1SQhL-2g1SQeN-2g1SPQy-2g1SPpb-2g1SP5K-2g1SPxU-2g1SPhn-2g1SP3F-2g1SQYP-2g1SQiM-2g1SQdS-2g1SQKY
Most people don't really need the newer tech that come with newer cameras. For most us, the E-M1 Mark II is plenty. Glad you agree, Kim! Thanks for stopping by.
Yup! 4k/30. Its newer counterparts can do 4k/60 and 1080/120, though. That's a compromise people will have to make but for $500 (or less), 4k/30 and 1080/60 is more than reasonable.
Love this camera! The fact you can get this for $500 is bonkers. Between the weather-sealing, IQ, features like pro-capture and glass selection this is still a pro level camera in 2024 but one you can use as a daily driver because of its size. I used to shoot Canon full frame and there's no way I'm going back. Not to knock Canon, those cameras are incredible, but the size and feel of Oly does it for me and fits what I like to do much better.
My very first cameras were Canons. T100, 400D, and 60D. I still have the 60D with me as a reminder of where I started but I don't use it much anymore. Still a great camera but admittedly outdated and bulky. Glad you're enjoying your experience with Oly!
Definitely, George. Especially for photography. Another commenter pointed out the Lumix G9 and that, too, is an excellent bargain albeit a bit more video-centric.
There is no such camera as an EM-1 Mk I, it's only an EM-1 original version..... if you can find it referred to by Olympus as a Mark I, show me please.........
It's all semantics, really. E-M1 Mark I and E-M1 Original both point to the same exact thing. Kind of like how the words "destination" and "objective" mean the same thing depending on context. Officially, "Original" is accurate. But for separation's sake, "Mark I", "Mark II", and "Mark III" also are. Here's Robin Wong referring to it as "Original": robinwong.blogspot.com/2024/02/olympus-om-d-e-m1-original-still.html And here's people on Reddit referring to it as "Mark I": www.reddit.com/r/M43/comments/xtwc3c/olympus_em1_mki_in_2022/

Question
What are the size print outs have you done.
I have a new z63 with 24mpx
vs the m4/3 with 20mpx
Will I lose image quality?
I don't think so, Brian. I haven't printed anything larger than A4 but most of my photos are printed on 4x6 paper for album purposes. At higher ISOs, you do notice grain more in the larger print but on a bordered 4x6, I find it practically unnoticeable. There are many other photographers who've shot with less megapixels and made it to magazines, though.
For reference, here's a magazine photo I found on Flickr using the E-M1 Mark II:

I agree! I got an OM-1 last year, and got disappointed. Not much difference for my shooting.
Most people don't really need the newer tech that come with newer cameras. For most us, the E-M1 Mark II is plenty. Glad you agree, Kim! Thanks for stopping by.
Not all m4 3 lens are weather proof. Only the expensive pro line.
@@danc2014 not really, the 12-50mm oly kit lens is weathersealed. The 14-150mm mk2 also.
It actually does 4K video.
Yup!
Biggest bargain in used cameras.
Here's Robin Wong referring to it as "Original":

And here's people on Reddit referring to it as "Mark I":
