    Different seats is due to the lengthening of the trains. It used to be IRM-3 and IRM-4 and they added coaches with new seats (same as the second batch of trains) to form VIRM-4 and VIRM-6 (V=verlengd / lenghtened). The VIRM fourth batch have yet different seats again (blue plus red). So VIRM has 3 kinds of seats, the slippery one you set on being my least favourite.
    All VIRM's are getting a makeover and will get the same look/feel/seats as DDZ you reviewed earlier. With faux-leather and bronze details on dours and such, they are really nice! The are named VIRMm with the little m standing for: modernized.

      I also like the updated look of the renovated VIRMs, though I will miss the quirky LED lights on the bottom floor. That said, I don't really like the new seats. They are a bit hard and slippery. I prefer the soft blue ones of the VIRM-IV, but that's also harder to clean.

      @@ministerievanstudiecollege5788 What I won't miss is the whining noise when they pull up. That was much worse in the past, but the older models occasionally still have it, it seems. My regular (now previous) commuting track was Leiden-Amsterdam, and the service there is still mainly carried out with the oldest stock.

      I go (almost) daily to Amsterdam which is mostly with this train. When I see the old and new ones coupled I always choose to the old one. Why? Now is the chance, they will be refurbished/scrapped soon.

    3:38 the logic behind the windows would seems to me that they are small and curved to allow a great enough view and light entrance while still giving enough structural support to the body shell of the coach

    • @stefanschader856
      @stefanschader856 2 роки тому +8

      The top windows are curved to fit European tunnels which are rounded on top and were never planned for double decker passenger rolling stock. Hence the top round shape of these double decker trains.

    • @jefwisse1957
      @jefwisse1957 2 роки тому +1

      @@stefanschader856 That's correct, but also because there has to be enough space for the wind to pass the train. In the Hanzelijn (track between Amsterdam and Zwolle) is a tunnel built too small. That means that train have to reduce speed to enter the tunnel and drive trough it. (although the route was built for high speed (200 kmh) trains.

    They're the most common train type especially in the western Netherlands where I live. They kinda look like high speed trains on the outside but I don't find them as comfy. Glad you enjoyed the ride though, and you should try the ICM next that mostly runs from the big cities to the east and the north. They're like the ICR and the most comfy trains in the country :) Cheers mate

      Those are international trains, which highlights the kinda painful fact that IC trains of other countries are a lot more classy and comfortable than the Dutch ones XD Dutch IC trains are closer to RE/Interregio actually.

    • @markoobid2005
      @markoobid2005 4 роки тому +10

      @@vyashtuijnman6417 I don't think it's painful. Distances in the Netherlands are shorter and there are many passengers, so high-density trains like this one are suitable for Dutch IC services. The IC train on NS is practically the passenger train with less stops, nothing more than that. Is there any supplement for IC trains on NS?

    • @vyashtuijnman6417
      @vyashtuijnman6417 4 роки тому +1

      @Marko The only ''real'' IC's are the ones from the big cities to Leeuwarden, Groningen and Eindhoven, plus the crowded af IC Direct. But its true about the distances, although this train isn't really as ''welcoming'' as, say, the IC2000 in Switzerland or even some Dostos in Germany. Glad they're being refurbished though.

      It's hardly as though NS has been an early adopter in this, though. And to an extent you can understand why: changing the tank requires time, which is not always possible with the intensive use this stock sees. But a huge advantage of adopting septic tanks is that now the toilets get an occasional clean too (still not quite up to the level of even the greasiest Belgian commuter train, but still), which wasn't the case previously. I have seen toilets that would make the cast of Trainspotting shudder.

    Roosendaal is both a terminus for many national trains and also a stop for international trains to and from Belgium. In Belgium, trains travel on the left (as they do also in France), whereas they travel on the right in The Netherlands. This is why the pattern of crossovers in Roosendaal is particularly complex.

    Nice video! I’m on this type of train very often so it’s not so special anymore, but thanks to these double deckers we don’t have serious capacity issues yet.
    I was a bit disappointed when I found out that the modernised type has no power sockets in 2nd class. NS is not an early adopter of those, unfortunately.
    My last remark is about the space for bikes. NS doesn’t really want everyone to transport their bikes on the train. During rush hour, it is not even allowed. And the price is not attractive at all; around €7 currently. So it’s just an extra service for those who really need it. But there is a convenient bike rental system available at many trainstations at a cost of €3,85 per day.

    A few small corrections. The first generation of the V-IRM were being build from 1994 till 1996 by De Dietrich/Alstom (47 coaches total) and Talbot (till 1995) and Bombardier (from 1995 onwards for 243 coaches total) and were than called DD-IRM, which stands for Dubbeldekker Inter Regio Materiaal (Double Decker Inter Regional Material). After extending the first generation in 2000 they were called V-IRM, which stands for Verlengde Inter Regio Materiaal (Extended Inter Regional Material) or V-IRM 1 (with 1 as the first generation). The second/third generation are from the 2002-2005, fourth generation from 2008-2009. The modernisation of the first generation of V-IRM (V-IRMm) has started in 2016 and you took a non modernised first generation train. The seats in the cabin were first generation, while in the bike area second generation. I don't know why there is a difference, but I do know that there were seats added when they extended the first generation. The coach you entered at 6:19 is one of the coaches that was added on in 2000 when they extended the train.

      Correction required: I worked at Talbot until the spring of 1986 and we had delivered the first generation Double Decker Trains for about a year and a half at that time. The windows on the upper deck were down sized after we had structural stability issues on the prototype during the design phase.

    • @Mike05121988
      @Mike05121988 2 роки тому

      @@lotharerkens8154 the trains (or actually traincarriages) you are talking about are the DDM's. Those are the first generation of doubledecker trains, but not the same as the videomaker went on. The DDM's are staight up on the sides and curved on the top. The DD-AR (the follow ups of DDM) were based of the DDM. Both type were mostly ordered to serve local commutertrains. The modernised version is shown on 0:57 and currently is called DDZ. Although it is modernised, the shape of the train you meant is still the same. The DD-IRM (or V-IRM) trains, of which the videomaker has boarded and also shown in this video, are the next generation of doubledeckers following up both DDM and DD-AR. You can see the shape difference at 2:02. Unlike the DDM and DD-AR, the DD-IRM were brought in as intercity trains. There are more differences between the old DD-AR/DDM and the DD-IRM/V-IRM, but that's way to much to put down here. I have been on these trains many times. And I do know the differences.

    Roosendaal is a bit "special" because it deals with international traffic between Belgium and the Netherlands. It needs lots of extra space to store wagons that aren't in use, there's probably lots of cargo transport that needs extra space (and in the past may have needed more office space for import/export checks), and it has to deal with the differences between Dutch and Belgian technology (3000V in Belgium vs. 1500V in the Netherlands).

    Glad you picked up the beauty of this station. It is old, as Wikipedia (in Dutch) explanes: "In 1907 the building was replaced by the current building to a design by Daniël Knuttel and George van Heukelom. In 1907 a locomotive shed, a signal box, a signal bridge and the customs warehouse were built next to the station building. The locomotive shed still exists as a protected monument. [2] The station building was badly damaged in World War II, after which it was rebuilt in 1949 under the leadership of Sybold van Ravesteyn. The architect largely maintained the 1905 design, but did create a new, more sober entrance building." For the Dutch text see nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Station_Roosendaal

    carefull that there are 4 genirations of virm rolling stock and that the trains are made in sutch a way that individual cars can be swopped as long as the are the same tipe, one handels power an other has a toiled etc. this is also a reason the the could be lengthend relitively easily

    5:32 in the original batch Holec made the electric parts and traction equipment for the trains sets. a short time after completion of the order Alstom acquired Holec Ridderkerk. when extra coaches were ordered for the lengthening of the stock the now 6 coaches long sets have an extra driven bogie which has new made traction systems from the same type but now from an Alstom plant. it’s always one of the (couple of) middle coaches in the old 4 and 6 coach sets pre the, terrible imo, refurbishment

    These older trains used to have the nickname 'The bagpipe'. This becausse it used to make a bagpipe like howl when moving. This has been removed by now, but it took some time before they found the cause of the somewhat annoying sound. It wasn't very loud, thankfully.
    Also, the coach at 2:40 is a Silent coach. Seen by the S on the window. In case you want some peace and quiet, or time to work.

    To know why the Windows are small a lil bit of background story
    In 1991 the IRM (InterRegioMaterieel) was introduced. The passenger demand growed and the trains were lenged becoming VIRM (VerlengdInterRegioMaterieel) in the IRM there was no airco but little slide gaps above the window u could open for fresh air. Nowadays it has airco so the gaps are gone and thats why the winsows are small.
    Btw the interior was not refurbushed thats why its outdated. The trains are getting modernizeid now

      I think you got confused with the DD-AR trains. Those had ventilation holes above the window in the upper deck, the (V)IRM never had those.

    I love your videos. Ironically i specially love to see your reviews of trains i took myself to compare experiences. Like this one. I live in germany, so i took the ICE ofc, the Flixtrain, the swedish X2000, different dutch IC trains like the VIRM and ICM, PKP Intercity (wich i can really recommand, if you did not take them yet).
    Oh btw: Flixtrain completely refurbished their coaches. could be up for another review^^

    Actually I don’t like these trains at all, cramped and bad seating and they are slow. It’s a pity Dutch railways are going for trainsets only instead of separate coaches. I miss the former ICR coaches with separate locomotives. Spacious, no double deck, comfy and very flexible. The train sets lack space for luggage and have a terrible seat pitch

    but indeed those are the most common trains from the NS, so u see them everywhere

    The windows are that size because the shape of the coaches is near to the clearance limits. For that reason the coaches will never go over the borders, even if the overhead voltage difference could be mended. The seat pitch in the coach configuration is narrow, and not too comfortable. Although the EMU's are doing services to Schiphol airport, there is no space for the larger size suitcases. That is a sad omission.
