I wish these two programs talked to each other better. It's really handy to have the "open in motion" dropdown for effects and titles. Would it be so hard for apple to do the same with footage?

Bummer that Apple removed true round tripping from FCP7 in FCPX.

Very helpful - but this process is a "train wreck" compared moving from Lightroom to Photoshop and back. Thanks and keep the great content coming!

This tutorial is SO useful to me because I annotate many of my images for my classes and my workflow to date has been, well, messy. Thank you so much for this really useful tutorial and, of course, Scotland loves you!

I still can't forgive Apple for not bringing over the old FCP 7 to Motion workflow.

I'm not familiar with FCP 7, so I'm curious, was it something like Premiere to After Effects?

@@bamrainey Exactly the same, but more reliable and stable.

@@bamrainey It was very cool. Send a clip to motion, do some work on it, save and there'd be a .motn file on the FCP timeline. Open that up in motion again to make changes to it. Save and close to go back to FCP. Worked with Apple's sound editor "Soundtrack" too. Soundtrack had good noise removal tools.

Dylan! So incredibly helpful. This gives step by step evidence that will help users utilize the under-rated motion tool far more since it's nice and easy.
Dylan PLEASE tell us aspiring UA-camrs where you learn how to master UA-cam as a platform like you're doing. Did you take a course? Are you a part of a program? Any books? Thanks!

I watched lots and lots of UA-cam videos about UA-cam!
I’d check out Film Booth and Creator Booth. Easily my favorite place to learn about UA-cam!

I have a brand mew laptop with a lot of memory and storage. But when i use apple motion it slows down during playback. Even when i export it and send it to final cut pro. What should i do?

Wow I didn't know about that Xsend Motion thing !
It looks crazy, but at the same I'm surprised it's not a basic feature from Apple's ecosystem 🤔

Good video Dylan, It’s so crappy Apple took away round tripping before FCPX. I used to love using reference files in motion.

This has been a pet peeve of mine ever since they relaunched FCP along with compressor and Motion. You can send directly to compressor but not motion and then back again. Something Adobe does quite well with PP and AE and back again. Why doesn't apple do the same thing with Motion? Should not be a $99 plugin! But it is what it is. Thanks for the tip and now a quicker way to send to Motion.

As convenient as renaming the v2 is as v1, I tend to keep them separate in case I want to roll back. But to think I would do the red line effect by animating a mask 🫠

You left out the most important part about exporting from Motion to Final Cut if you want to do a workaround "dynamic linking" so you can make changes to something on the FCP timeline in Motion without export/replace. When you import the file into Final Cut, you need to make sure that you have "leave files in place" selected. If you don't, the file you're trying to replace will be in the Final Cut library storage and will not replace the media on the timeline.

    • @TheFinalCutBro

Totally hadn’t even thought about that! I haven’t turned off leave files in place in years, so it didn’t even occur to me that would be an issue. Thanks for sharing!

It’s good to know that I wasn’t too far off from how to go back and forth. I thought there may have been an easier way though.

Unfortunately as far as I’m aware, the workflow doesn’t exist 😭 that would be a great addition to that plugin.

Hi Dylan, I have a Motion 5 question for you: I have a 3D object. What I want to do is create a motion project that I can WRAP AROUND the 3D object's side (which is white, flat, but also circular... it's a mug). Is this possible? I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. I can't even get the image to wrap around the mug's side. HELP, BRO!!!
