It was fine to me until it became that. I used it when it was a place to share photos and status with family and friends. It's now just a collective garbage dump. They all don't have any measure of reasonability in what they are throwing at people, and this is a major problematic component of social networks in general today. They are designed for engagement and advertisement revenue, and have absolutely zero consideration on the mental health and benefits to those consuming it. It's an algorithm that exploits the worst tendencies in people to show them the worst possible content so people get addicted to it. So I personally stay far far faaar away from "Trending" pages, and systems that throw whatever they think is engaging at you non-stop.
Generally, if you need a trash bin, go to a department store. Also, most train stations have bins on the inside (past the gate). And most combinis have bins as well. As for such large pieces of garbage, ask your hotel.
I always wanted to visit Sapporo since I was a kid back in the 60's when the Winter Olympics were held there , seemed impossibly exotic back then in Black and White on TV and crackly commentry from David Vine , never managed it . I remember the BBC intro music well even today

TL;DR is that 5-12 hours vids make BANK compared to shorter vids and tossing up a stream is the absolute cheapest and easiest way to create said 5-12 hour vid. As always, blame the YT Algo. The measure of "No Koreans allowed!" taken by Watazumi Shrine, the most historic shrine in Tsushima that dates back 1165 years, is not discriminatory against Koreans at all! This shrine has been warning Korean tourists for over 10 years. It was not just the smoking, littering of cigarette butts, and snapping back at the shrine when they were warned, but also assaults by Korean tourists that infuriated the shrine in Tsushima. It was also the urination and defecation on the shrine grounds. I want people to understand the limits of this shrine's patience.
My last trip to Japan I hiked the Nakasendo so I purchased Bear Spray and I wanted to make some tea on the way so I had a small camp stove. Long story short I didn't meet any bears and didn't use all the fuel. So I over thought it should I just leave these items in my room? Would the staff think something shady was going on if I just left in the room? I just ended up going to reception with my limited Japanese and they gladly took the bear spray and butane cannister.
Honestly, if they feel the need to do this, it means that there’s a problem that is bad enough that this became in necessity. I think Japan’s next step is to institute a visa system that requires tourists to state whether or not they plan on participating in any streaming activities and if so, that means they have to get a business visa. If you have a social media channel that is monetized, they would require you to declare that and in order to be allowed to stream you would need to get a visa that allows you to do so. I honestly believe the visa process would be the best bet they could add an education module to it that teaches people what is expected when they come to Japan and what is not acceptable. It’s sad that it has to go that route, but I don’t know what else they’re gonna do. They need tourism. Their economy is in the dumps.

I was one of those people that had planned a trip to Japan and Korea for May 2020 and of course we had to cancel. Watching videos kept me entertained and gave us ideas on where to travel. We are thinking about 2025 now.

Just to point out something, the majority sentiment in Korea is that the island of Tsushima is a territory of Japan (as its current geographical sovereignty lies with Japan). On a separate note though, while there were definitely rude and frankly idiotic Korean tourists (as majority of tourists to Tsushima are Korean as Pete mentioned) this type of blantant hatred towards a targeted group of people should never be acceptable. This issue also made the news in Korea as well.

I think it’s pretty cool that you can freely visit shrines. I have no problem with them being quick on the trigger with banning people. Not the exact equivalent but I can’t imagine people using marae as a tourist attraction for people just to walk around freely here in NZ.

One huge reason I have wanted to travel to Japan was to visit Kyoto an see Geisha. One Thing that had held me back from travel was fear of not knowing all the etiquette within the country. Banning tourists from certain areas as well as only Japanese speakers in some restaurants starts adding up to uncomfortable environment for traveling. Not a good look. Sad to hear all this
If you want to see real geisha and maiko, you can see them by going directly to events and festivals in Kyoto. As a tourist, it is inherently wrong to stalk them like a stalker, wanting to see their daily lives, so please watch them at work. There are also some complex events for foreigners that are held in English, where you can take pictures, and there are many other ways to do it right. Gion Corner is the most famous event, and the Gion Festival (starting soon) is the most famous festival, so if you are interested, check it out. Also, as for the shrines that are off limits to certain people on the island, there are very historical and political issues involved, and it is not a tourist issue. I feel like their goal is to harass and cause conflict by falsely claiming to be tourists, and then create exactly this kind of situation so that it makes the news and they can cry racism.

Hi Chris, I have a question. Or more of a short essay perhaps hehe. What did you mean with the "East Asia. I think it's very important to be clear what all of this is about than just "countries/people hating on each other". A lot of East Asian countries were colonized/brutally treated/t*rtured/k*lled (up to 30 million people were k*lled) by the Japanese during WW 2 and earlier, and there are still people living now that experienced those times. Japan never apologized nor did some kind of reparation to their victims and Japanese kids don't even learn about it in school (we don't either in the West barely when talking about WW2 btw). Japanese politicians/government don't recognize what they did either, they even give praise to war criminals and even today there's a lot of racisim against Korean/Chinese, and not to speak about S-E Asian people. Of course what a repressive government and society like China is doing sometimes against Japan for weird reasons (like for example not buying fish after the Hiroshima water got released into the ocean) is just stupid. But China does similar things to Korea as well (for example boycotting Korean products after they were to install THAAD). You should be able to talk about things in a more nuanced fashion without saying that "its unfortunate" and that you don't know where to stand on this and that "everyone just hates each other", because in that way you miss a lot of things that maybe you should condemn or care about. It's easy, you can both criticize the Chinese dictatorship and their policies, as well as condemn Japan for its behavior in regards to the war crimes etc. that it has committed before, as well as racism in Japan. I'm not saying it's okay to wreck havoc on a temple because of this (but maybe it could be if war criminals were buried and still celebrated there) but please do more research on East Asian and S-E history, or be more clear about what you mean.

We accidentally lost a broken suitcase in luggage storage while rushing for a train. Felt awful later when we realised what this meant.
In other countries you also need to pay for your trash and rubbish. It's to prevent dumping and littering trash.

Note on the Question at 15:10, TheSpiffingBrit just did a vid on this. TL;DR is that 5-12 hours vids make BANK compared to shorter vids and tossing up a stream is the absolute cheapest and easiest way to create said 5-12 hour vid.

The measure of "No Koreans allowed!" taken by Watazumi Shrine, the most historic shrine in Tsushima that dates back 1165 years, is not discriminatory against Koreans at all! This shrine has been warning Korean tourists for over 10 years. It was not just the smoking, littering of cigarette butts, and snapping back at the shrine when they were warned, but also assaults by Korean tourists that infuriated the shrine in Tsushima. It was also the urination and defecation on the shrine grounds.
I want people to understand the limits of this shrine's patience.
My last trip to Japan I hiked the Nakasendo so I purchased Bear Spray and I wanted to make some tea on the way so I had a small camp stove. Long story short I didn't meet any bears and didn't use all the fuel. So I over thought it should I just leave these items in my room? Would the staff think something shady was going on if I just left in the room? I just ended up going to reception with my limited Japanese and they gladly took the bear spray and butane cannister.
Honestly, if they feel the need to do this, it means that there’s a problem that is bad enough that this became in necessity. I think Japan’s next step is to institute a visa system that requires tourists to state whether or not they plan on participating in any streaming activities and if so, that means they have to get a business visa. If you have a social media channel that is monetized, they would require you to declare that and in order to be allowed to stream you would need to get a visa that allows you to do so. I honestly believe the visa process would be the best bet they could add an education module to it that teaches people what is expected when they come to Japan and what is not acceptable. It’s sad that it has to go that route, but I don’t know what else they’re gonna do. They need tourism. Their economy is in the dumps.

I was one of those people that had planned a trip to Japan and Korea for May 2020 and of course we had to cancel. Watching videos kept me entertained and gave us ideas on where to travel. We are thinking about 2025 now.

Love the episode as usual! Just to point out something, the majority sentiment in Korea is that the island of Tsushima is a territory of Japan (as its current geographical sovereignty lies with Japan).
On a separate note though, while there were definitely rude and frankly idiotic Korean tourists (as majority of tourists to Tsushima are Korean as Pete mentioned) this type of blantant hatred towards a targeted group of people should never be acceptable. This issue also made the news in Korea as well.

I think it’s pretty cool that you can freely visit shrines. I have no problem with them being quick on the trigger with banning people. Not the exact equivalent but I can’t imagine people using marae as a tourist attraction for people just to walk around freely here in NZ.

There are some “long shorts” which are actually quite good and where you can learn smth, for example a quick recipe or crafting, a hairdo etc. But these shorts are obviously not the majority.

Pent up post-pandemic energy making tourists act like idiots, which REALLY doesn't work with Japan's strict rule based society. You never really heard about Japan turning hostile on tourists like this before 2020. Then again, the one thing the Japanese have always liked more than tourist money is when the tourist leaves and goes home.

Only difference is how many of them are actually going to Japan now. if 1 in 1000 tourists are idiots, and you go from getting about 750 a year to getting 100,000 a year, the tourists don't have to actually be any worse for it to go from 'that one dumbarse' to 'tourists are a problem'. (numbers entirely arbritrary to illistrate the point).

Yes, what that shrine is doing is discrimination based on nationality. Littering is not harassment and harassment was not the stated reason for banning Koreans. Even if some Koreans harassed some people banning all Koreans is textbook discrimination. It is no different than in the US back when some places banned black people. That is discrimination.

One huge reason I have wanted to travel to Japan was to visit Kyoto an see Geisha. One Thing that had held me back from travel was fear of not knowing all the etiquette within the country. Banning tourists from certain areas as well as only Japanese speakers in some restaurants starts adding up to uncomfortable environment for traveling. Not a good look. Sad to hear all this
If you want to see real geisha and maiko, you can see them by going directly to events and festivals in Kyoto.
As a tourist, it is inherently wrong to stalk them like a stalker, wanting to see their daily lives, so please watch them at work.
There are also some complex events for foreigners that are held in English, where you can take pictures, and there are many other ways to do it right.
Gion Corner is the most famous event, and the Gion Festival (starting soon) is the most famous festival, so if you are interested, check it out.
Also, as for the shrines that are off limits to certain people on the island, there are very historical and political issues involved, and it is not a tourist issue.

I have a question. Or more of a short essay perhaps hehe.
What did you mean with the "East Asia. There's all sorts of things going on, all sorts of discrimination from all countries and some mortifying conversations I've had" comment? Then Pete replying "fear of the other" and Chris again: "I don't really know where to stand on this really other than it's unfortunate innit." I think it's very important to be clear what all of this is about than just "countries/people hating on each other". A lot of East Asian countries were colonized/brutally treated/t*rtured/k*lled (up to 30 million people were k*lled) by the Japanese during WW 2 and earlier, and there are still people living now that experienced those times. Japan never apologized nor did some kind of reparation to their victims and Japanese kids don't even learn about it in school (we don't either in the West barely when talking about WW2 btw). Japanese politicians/government don't recognize what they did either, they even give praise to war criminals and even today there's a lot of racisim against Korean/Chinese, and not to speak about S-E Asian people. Of course what a repressive government and society like China is doing sometimes against Japan for weird reasons (like for example not buying fish after the Hiroshima water got released into the ocean) is just stupid. But China does similar things to Korea as well (for example boycotting Korean products after they were to install THAAD). You should be able to talk about things in a more nuanced fashion without saying that "its unfortunate" and that you don't know where to stand on this and that "everyone just hates each other", because in that way you miss a lot of things that maybe you should condemn or care about. It's easy, you can both criticize the Chinese dictatorship and their policies, as well as condemn Japan for its behavior in regards to the war crimes etc. that it has committed before, as well as racism in Japan. I'm not saying it's okay to wreck havoc on a temple because of this (but maybe it could be if war criminals were buried and still celebrated there) but please do more research on East Asian and S-E history, or be more clear about what you mean.

There's plenty of Koreans who do their best to be respectful but they're being punished too, because of the actions of a small number of individuals. Koreans aren't even the tourists who cause the most or worst problems, yet they're the only ones getting banned. That's just blatantly discriminatory
