  • Admitted serial killer Jeremy Skibicki has been handed four life sentences with no chance of parole for 25 years in the 2022 murders of four Indigenous women in Winnipeg. Rebecca Contois, 24; Morgan Harris, 39; Marcedes Myran, 26; and an unidentified woman Indigenous community members have named Mashkode Bizhiki'ikwe, or Buffalo Woman, were Skibicki's victims. Melissa Ridgen reports on how the victims' families are reacting, what the judge says he wished he could do and the questions about whether Skibicki had more victims.
The federal government has provided new details into how Ahmed and Mostafa Eldidi, the father and son who are accused of plotting a terror attack in the name of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), entered Canada. Mackenzie Gray reports on how Ahmed Eldidi went through the immigration system and the Conservatives' scathing comments about the major security failures.
Israeli forces have conducted the largest, coordinated raid inside the occupied West Bank in two decades. The Palestinian territory has seen a significant surge in violence since Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza began. As Redmond Shannon reports, this raid is a sign this tense chapter in the Middle East is far from over.
With climate change rapidly melting glaciers, the safety concerns of glacial ice caves are being highlighted after a tourist was killed in an ice cave collapse in Iceland. Heather Yourex-West reports on the risks and what Canada can learn from the tragedy.
Concerns are growing about the spread of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), also known as 'Triple E,' a rare mosquito-borne virus after the death of a New Hampshire man. Mike Armstrong explains what the symptoms are, what makes the virus so dangerous and how its transmission can be limited.
Plus, the Paris Paralympics are underway, and Team Canada is hoping to improve upon the 21 medals it won at the Tokyo Games in 2021. As Eric Sorensen explains, the competition has become tougher in recent years, but Canada is confident it can keep up with the best in the world.

The certainty of being caught is a vastly more powerful deterrent than the punishment. Research shows clearly: If criminals think there's only a slim chance they will be caught, the severity of punishment - even draconian punishment - is an ineffective deterrent to crime.
If the objective is to prevent murders, the death penalty is not the answer. If the death penalty worked as a deterrent, the countries that have the death penalty would have no murders.

@darlene2709 nothing will stop people from victimizing others.
Deterrents like knowing your victim may fight back or have a weapon like a firearm, pepper spray etc and punishment of death, long prison time goes a long way!
The liberals soft of criminals policies clearly are not working.

Canada must expand the mandate of our military to respond to disasters such as massive forest fires so that we can respond faster and in a much more effective way. Yes this means increasing funding of the military but I suspect it will be much much cheaper than the damage caused by the fires. In addition, it will help Canadians better understand and appreciate the value of their armed forces. Their primary mandate would remain defense but the logistics, deployment, even their training positions the military as the best organisation to respond to these random, catastrophic events

The practice of the death penalty ceased to be used in Canada 1963. A death penalty is actually an easy way out for most people, in comparison to life in prison. Take a look at serial killer Robert Pickton's fate. He met himself when he was brutally murdered in prison - May/2024.

The good news (bad news for you) is that society tends to progress over time and obnoxious bigoted attitudes are less and less acceptable.
