- SpongeBob SquarePants has an iconic laugh that defines his character, as intended by Stephen Hillenburg. Tom Kenny has pulled off SpongeBob's laugh for more than 20 years, but now fans are starting to notice a slight change in newer SpongeBob episodes. What's going on?
Because SpongeBob's laugh is one of the most important parts of his character, it's understandable why fans may be concerned. The voice may not be as easy for Tom Kenny today, but his overall SpongeBob performance proves that he's still one of the best voice actors of all time!

You can't just take one isolated laugh and say the voice can't be done. SpongeBob's done more giggles and laughs than just that one.
He's been doing the role for almost 30 years. I can imagine that such a laugh is very taxing to do like how mark Hamill can't do the joker laugh as well as he did

"Almost 30 years" is a little bit of an exaggeration. The show started in 1999, thus it has only been 23 years.
Yeah Mark’s joker is a lot more raspy compared to his BTAS days, which is bound to happen with doing a certain voice for that long.

Mark Hamill maybe not do that very evil laugh anymore loudly like back in BTAS, or the Classic Batman movies but he's still outstanding and all that.
The "evidence" in question is literally just Spongebob giggling/chuckling, not full on laughing.

This reminds me of how Marge Simpson's voice actress had a similar decay in her voice because of how the character was voiced. I hope Tom Kenny gets well soon 🤕

If Tom was an animal, he would be SpongeBob. He is the definition of the character. They are one in the same. No one can come close to being that good at being SpongeBob, so thinking about the fact that he will some day stop being SpongeBob kills me to the core of my body, heart, and soul, but it is inevitable and I think that I can except that with tears rolling down my cheeks.

@@Love_Dearly but SpongeBob is a kitchen sponge, there’s times in the show where he gets treated as one (gets used to clean a bathroom, had a rougher more “abrasive” green side). He looks nothing like actual sea sponges, only in his earliest design before he was made into a show.

I still think Tom Kenny’s still got it. Sure, the laugh may sound slightly different, but c’mon, you can’t help that. Mr. Kenny’s been doing SpongeBob’s voice for quite some time, so things are bound to change. This man is truly incredible and he will keep voice acting to his hearts content. Of course, nothing lasts forever, but Tom Kenny will surely try his best to do our favorite sponge’s voice (and laugh) for as long as he possibly can. That clip of him doing the iconic laugh continuously made me smile like a doofus.
And our voices can naturally change over time as well
Tom Kenny will forever be one of my favorite voice actors. He literally is unstoppable with that SpongeBob laugh. He’s still got it, I don’t know what that fan was talking about. SpongeBob has laughed like that before in earlier episodes too, he just giggled, not a full on laugh. Stay strong Kenny we love you ❤️

Reminds me of the toll doing Marge Simpson's voice had on Julie Kavner. You can hear the strain in her voice in the newer seasons of The Simpsons, so I'm not surprised a similar thing is happening with Tom Kenney
To my understanding, that's true with any part of your body you use too much, you're going to strain it eventually. Even still, it's quite impressive that he can pull it off to begin with, from what I've seen about him, he's a very talented voice actor
The voice of Marge is much scratchier than that, and since Julie Kavner is a woman, she has likely gone through menopause by now, which Tom Kenny will obviously never experience. All the female *Simpsons* voice artists are getting up there in years. Tress MacNeille is as old now as June Foray was in the 1990s.
Tom is a living legend. The fact that he has pulled of SpongeBobs laugh for 23 years is incredible.
He's a great voice actor.

I just realized that SpongeBob's voice is pretty much inimitable and if we lost Tom Kenny, we will never get a convincing SpongeBob voice actor.
Everyone else in the show has a voice that can be imitable.

So that's how Tom Kenny does the Spongebob laugh. Pretty funny when I saw him doing it. But he is getting old and he's been doing that laugh for years ever since the show aired. I get it really. I hope it didn't hurt while he was doing the laugh.

It's a dark day in voice acting when that episode of Spongebob losing his laugh actually becomes canon. This is truly the epitome of putting your heart and soul into a character you love.
Makes me think, if he ever loses his laugh: they could reuse his laugh from earlier moments, right? There are so many samples so it wouldn't be that hard right? (But then again, I'm not a sound designer)

It's nice Tom Kenny is still able to do the voice. And I know he's said how upset he would be if the show ended but I just wish spongebob would end. It's passed it's time IMO

I an original fan whos been watching spongebob since he first aired back in 1999 admit I will cry the day he ends I've been ready for a while I thought by now it would have been so but whenever his real last episode is I will call out of work to watch it I was there to welcome him to Nickeldoen and I will be there to say goodbye😭

I mean the dude just turned 60 and has been doing the show for over 20 years, so I can imagine that age has something to do with it. Maybe I'm crazy Idk.😂 I mean at SOME point the voice is gonna change. It's been gradually changing since the beginning that's just what age does. Your voice changes with age. He's still killing it all these years later though! He sounds great in Cosmic Shake!
I think part of the reason the laugh may have changed was do to the direction of the show. The show has changed and evolved so much that it doesn’t seem far fetched that something like that would also be on the list of many changes.

of course, if voice actors ever strain their voices, it’ll eventually change. he got older as the years went on, nothing wrong with it and we shouldn’t make him feel bad. for the most part, he still sounds exactly the same and he made our childhoods great ♥️♥️

This reminds me of an old episode when SpongeBob couldn’t do his iconic laugh because he laughed so much, he broke his laugh box. But in the end, Squidward’s the one that broke his laugh box and had to settle with SpongeBob’s.
I think tom still has it, I saw him in a recent video of him answering questions with him doing the laugh at the end. And yes it sounds more on the raspy side, but still sounded accurate to SpongeBob in my opinion.

I used to watch Spongebob as a kid and even now I still love it. Despite his downfalls with voice acting over the years you still gotta put love love and respect on Tom Kenny. the Spongebob Squarepants Tv show and the video games related to that show have brought his joy for the past 20 years since 1999. I'm far impressed just by how long this show has been on air like it still is now and it's lifespan all alone. Seems like most shows stay on air for 10 years at most and then they die. The Spongebob franchise deserves a honorary badge for running along with us for 2 decades. If the show is still on air long enough maybe we can make it 3 decades

For Tom Kenny what made him a legendary of how far he push limits on his voice though sadly cost him to have surgery for doing the SpongeBob laugh for so long. Though a lot of voice actors happened with situations when pushing voices to absolute limit either strain the voice or have surgery on throat if they damage it (for me that's damn dedication they are doing really good on their job), some voice actors might have accidents like the legendary Mel Blanc when he had his Car accident in 1961, Which that affected his voice due to his injuries, actually even affect in his performances after the accident. You see what I mean when you find comparisons on yt and you see what I mean

Tom Kenny has been doing that laugh for 22 years.
he’s 60, so it’s just a natural part of the lifecycle.
He's done the laugh so many times that they could probably take clips of prior laughs and reuse them. Or he could take the Mark Hamill route and figure out a new strategy that might work.

anyway I'm OP (CaeDios), I've made that tweet a few weeks ago after watching the new spongebob episode "Plane to Sea" and noticed a change in spongebob's laugh. honestly, I should've worded it better but what I meant to say exactly is that Tom Kenny's SpongeBob laugh is different now and it's very obvious if you've watched the show from start to finish as much I do (I'm insane), it's the same for his voice as well, being more nasally and higher pitched. I think Tom just deserves a break 🥲, but from what I've heard from his VA friends is that he likes to push himself to do so much work lol!

I haven't watched any new Spongebob stuff since 2015, with the 2nd Movie & season 9 being the last thing I've seen.
But after hearing Tom do Spongebob in both Nick Brawl & Cosmic Shake, there was a noticeable, but very easy to get used to difference. He might not be as high pitched as before, but I think he's still on point, regardless of doing the role for 20+ years.
Tom Kenny is such an amazing voice acter that I hope will continue to do this job. He's been doing this crap for frickin' 20 years and yet sometimes people forget him, such an iconic legend, hopefully he'll continue and may God bless him and you.

Sooner or later Tom is eventually going to stop voicing Bob and I'm just preparing myself for that to happen because obviously we'd all fall into a deep depression. Same with how Charles Martinet has been voicing Mario since '96. So many voice actors have brought beloved characters to life for the past several years and If there's one thing we all know it's that eventually they'll start to movie on. 😔

If Tom Kenny or any iconic modern voice actor with countless roles actually retired or died, I would be devastated but I know it’s natural. New talents can always come.

It looks to me that Tom Kenny can still do it, but even if he couldn't they have hours of spongebobs laugh from previous episodes. I think that was based on the context of the scene where his full on laugh would be out of place given there wasn't anything intended to be all too funny or exciting.

I just think the show has evolved so much since it’s debut that the laugh just isn’t necessary anymore. Honestly, if we heard his original laugh in these modern episodes I think it would feel out of place believe it or not. I think SpongeBob’s modern smaller giggles are really charming and fit well with the modern show.

Sure I guess you could say he's lost some of his luster but overall I think it's not too bad. What I think really changed is the pitch and tone of SB's voice. It was a lot lower and deeper in earlier seasons but he sounded like a charming dork and now it just sounds flatly annoying.
Even if Tom Kenny can't do the laugh as well anymore, I feel like the clip didn't show that. Spongebob just laughs like that sometimes.
